@@monkusbee when your ice fishing your sitting right beside your hole so it's not really feasible to use a full sized pole ,it actually works against you in that situation because youd have to be the distance of your pole away from your hole to effectively jig and what not. 99% of the time pike don't want anything moving slowly in cold water - i will catch pike on a deadstick or when jigging for perch but when i bought an underwater cam i noticed that the amount of times i actually caught a pike on deadstick/slow jigging was 1 to 10 compared to when i was making noise or jigging with a big spoon/rapala looking for walleye. in the summer i catch untold amounts of "hammer handles" just fishing a worm or minnow off a bobber trying for gills and crappies

Tips from old people ! #1- Remove slime and stink from Northern Pike handled, sprinkle table salt on palm wet and scrub vigorously for 10 seconds, rinse--hands smell fresh as Spring.. Wipe bait down if Northern takes a bait intended for Panfish or they'll refuse it. Same when you start to clean a Northern, sprinkle with salt and rub over it, all the slime comes off and not into meat ! Next: Always check hook point sharpness by dragging it across your thumb nail. If sharp it will immediately dig into thumb nail. New lure are notorious for selling you a dull hook. Many nice ones have been lost because of NEW dull hooks. Another warning when you end a day or use of a particular set up, DON'T put your hook into the ceramic EYE on the pole, put it into the frame of the eye. Barbs scratch the ceramic potion of an EYE and turns it into a sharp burr, cutting your line at the most unfortunate moment ! Run a cotton swab through ALL the eyes on a rod to check for burrs... Northerns like all fish are attracted to SOUND, the jingle of that hook on a spoon draws fish from hundreds of feet away. Certain tones are better with a sharper ring than one bouncing against brass spoons. I've done much study on this subject. Also, did you know Northern Pike loose all their teeth the end of December far into January to replace old teeth like a child looses it's "Baby Teeth" , only Northerns loose them every year !!! That's why they'll timidly take Crappie minnows or wax worms during this time. Loom in their mouths, it's like swollen cotton for jaws, then check their stomachs, tiny tiny Perch and Sunfish under an inch long are their main diet. They won't take a Perch of any size (6 inches or Shiners because of their tender mouths. Did you know of a study done on predatory fish trigger on the bait's Pupil Size of the bait's eye !? When the minnow is started by a predator, their pupils dilate to large size and triggers an attack. Remember this when finishing a spearing decoy or making changes to bought fishing lures and spoons ! I've made contact with an eye company and was interest in the old treat "Cracker Jacks" and the prismatic "toys" inside. Thinking if they rocked up and down in the SWIM ACTION of a decoy and would change from small to large pupils as the moved up and down, this would be perfect. They had read the research on this and bought a big sheet of prism cut plastic w/this effect painted into the grooves. Remember the dog running as you tilted the small plastic square back and forth; same concept ! They tried it ,but the refraction that is caused by under water, will not allow prism action to refract in water. So goes a good thought..... In your MART store ,in fabrics ,you can buy type writer size sheets of 1/8th inch felt and any color , CHEAP ! If you cut a circle the size of a penny or smaller and glue it on a spoon and put a drop of scent or fish oil on it, the attraction becomes greater than jingles and flash, right ? Many of your existing Summer baits work great under the ice , if you just drill a hole near the head and insert a small "eye screw" with Super Glue in hole and screw in eye. PLACEMENT: If you put a rubber band around body of lure, and a string attached to rubber band; as you move it forward or back until the lure hangs horizontal, mark this spot on top of head and you know exactly where to drill hole for eye screw ! Think how many Super ideas are being lost every day in Nursing Homes. They'd enjoy talking to you and your visit would be worth it's weight in GOLD ! If Covid permits it, make a call to Supervisor and talk to them about your idea and she or he would know exactly who fits your needs. God will make a mark in his or her book for your final visit, maybe giving you a special rock along a heavenly stream for your ETERNITY !

That's what I thought was gonna happen, tying the line through the spoon would be good if you were using a short leader of 20 or 30lb braid tied to a barrel swivel to eliminate twisting, then whatever you have spooled. Tie in a barrel swivel about a foot above your jig/ hook to guarantee the elimination of twist. Also, let em peel and put your tip way down in the water in thick ice, the edge of the ice will cut mono as fast as a tooth.

Fascinating Video in many ways as someone who frequently fishes Pike, Bass and Perch. It does affirm some of my experience. When bass typically strike, they hit hard fast and generally will not get off the hook, Pike seem more almost casual in their approach. I use spinners a lot and rarely will a bass become unhooked because when they hit they bite hard. Pike are hit and miss and I lose a number just because they only passively strike and the one hook sometimes does not set well. Watching this video seems to confirm that experience. I was blown away by the size, on video some of those fish looked fairly big, but when you brought them up, they were much smaller then I expected. Still interesting though.
@mikejunt
@mikejunt Жыл бұрын
This is because bass, perch, and panfish are all suction/inhalation feeders: they don't have teeth, and they usually swallow their prey whole, as they feed by taking a sudden gulp, creating a sharp inflow of water that pulls the prey into their mouth. Pike are toothed fish who rely on their bite to kill their prey and may bite it into pieces if it's too large, so they don't need to inhale the prey. Pike teeth are not patchy and are quite sharp; you can catch them ice fishing because you're a lot more likely to get the hook straight in their lip, but in other seasons you pretty much always need a wire leader as they can easily bite the line off as the first pike does in this video. I've had pike hit smaller fish that I was reeling in and ended up bringing them in with a mouth-shaped imprint of tooth marks on the body.

The brand new spoon fluttering down on camera just adds insult to injury ! I think your getting a reaction bite from neutral pike. Thats why they arent committing. Great footage bud !

Looks like your rod is very soft for pike. It's great for perch and maybe for bass, but for pike and zander harded rod is preffered. Great uw shots!

Maybe you should bring a magnet to recover your lures. Magnet fishing.Guaranteed catch of the day. That is really a cool shot of the pikes. Pikes are preying fish. They’ll pop out of nowhere. 10lbs test?

You need to add a steel leader to your setup. Pike will usually bite the line off if you don't have steel.

Used to jig for panfish. Always attracked more than were interested in biting. But when the group would drift away from my line, it was always because there was a pike moving into the area.

Your jigging at fish strikes 10:41 and 13:10 are longer faster jigs. That seems to trigger them more than the short bounces you were doing earlier.

No leader, lol. Yes the line goes through the lure to prevent twist, but you need a good thick fluorocarbon leader on there at the very least for Pike. Love the underwater footage, even when we lose fish, we still learn something, so good on you for showing this. Many other channels will only show their successes.
