Bryce Dallas Howard relished the opportunity to play Hilly in "The Help" from the minute she was sent the script. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, "The Help" is set in Mississippi during the 1960s and follows a southern girl (Emma Stone) who interviews the black women in her community who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families.
Bonnie Laufer from Tribute spoke with the talented Bryce in Los Angeles about what being in this film has meant to her, playing such an evil character and how much hairspray it took to keep her hair in place throughout the shoot.

People don’t praise her enough for this role. All the praise goes to Viola, Jessica and Octavia (they were truly wonderful) but Bryce was the only villain in the film and had to represent a whole community of people who believe in the things that Hilly believed in. So it wasn’t an easy role to take on and she did it flawlessly.

You absolutely right!! She nailed this role but unfortunate for her, she did not get much praise for the performance...😑
@nylotus
@nylotus 2 жыл бұрын
She didn't get much praise because we all hate Hilly. She's the original Karen and no one wants to praise that. We (black folks) can see so much of her in our day to day lives that it's hard to give her praises even though this is a fictional character. But you are correct... she played the role exceptionally well. So well none of us want to talk to her lol!

That role must have been really hard to play, but BDH was able to portray Hilly pretty damn well. She was able to clearly communicate that Hilly was the antagonist without making her an over the top cartoon villain. She was able to portray a clearly very racist character in a manner that could still be taken seriously, despite how hard it must have been to yell racial slurs at her castmates with a straight face.

“It’s the way she was raised”….the way people explain away adult decisions making is beyond! As if a lawyer in court could use this defense, yet of course racist actions can be explained this way.
@priscillajimenez27
@priscillajimenez27 2 жыл бұрын
Defense attorneys could use the childhood of a defendant depending on what it is. Either due to trauma, or mental capacities, or many other factors. Obviously it doesn't justify racism but you understand the intent or mental standing of the person a lik better. Seeing notes 2D black or white person but a 3D grey person flawed with good qualities who needs to be taught or brought to awareness.

Yeah I agree with you there. I mean at the end when she gives that look to Abeleen you can see that there might be a tiny tiny tiny speck of a good person in there somewhere but we also know by then that she isn't the type to admit she's wrong or try to change for that matter so it tragic but not sympathetic.

The film, The Help, was excellent. Bryce was superb as the villain of the piece, representing ignorance and racism, so embedded and institutionalized in that era and culture, that concepts like Black carry diseases that are different from Whites, when they are all the same human beings, was easy to incorporate into their thinking. I'm so glad we are past that shameful era in our past, although racism is far from gone in America and is still shamefully present. More must be done. I do disagree that Hilly was a product solely of her time and place. Her mother, played by Sissy Spacek, did not appear to be racist or have the same level of vitriol that Hilly displayed. The separate toilet issue may have been a product of the times, but... the refusal of the loan to her maid, and the cruelty shown when Hilly said it was the Christian thing to do, to refuse the loan, was pure Hilly not a cultural issue or how she was brought up. That refusal, and the many cruel things, like firing Minny for using her toilet and not going out in the rain to the outhouse, showed a Psychopath personality. Not sociopathic, because that is also a product of her upbringing, but either a Narcissistic or Psychopathic personality. If you look at Hilly this way, all her actions of cruelty and spite, make sense. Racism may be embedded in the culture, but deliberate cruelty is embedded in the personality.
