Explaining Seong Gi-hun's philosophy and backstory in Squid Game (2021). [Spoilers] Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) is the man with the umbrella. In this video I discuss his connections with Kang Sae-byeok, Sang-woo, and Oh Il-nam. I talk about how Gi-hun beat Squid Game and survived without going back on his morals. Reveal the complete translated (Korean to English) profile of Seong Gi-hun (Player 456). I also explain how he will not go down the same path as The Front Man.

it is also mentioned that gi-hun wasn't there when his daughter was born to save a man from dying. in the last ep, he called his daughter saying that he's gonna see her and give her a present but in the last minute, walked away from his plane, indicating that he will be doing the same thing again, saving someone's life or in this case, everyone's lives

3:00 another thing i noticed throughout the games is Gi-Hun only won the games because someone else helped him, ex: number 67 helping him by telling him which tile to jump on, Ali saving him in red light green light, il-nam giving him the marbles, even Sang-Woo killing himself to make Gi-Hun the winner-etc. i think having that kid help him at the claw machine to win a prize was foreshadowing for all of that.

Seeing that this was mentioned multiple times, just wanted to share a little Korean cultural info~ Most Koreans of the older generation had similar lifestyles and mostly lived in neighborhoods like the one in the marble game, played Squid Game (and pretty much all the other games), and had lunches just like the ones they were served :). You can even find them in restaurants in Korea, usually labeled in the menu as "nostalgic lunch box" or "lunch box of the past" So number 1 and number 456 def aren't the only ones who had similar childhoods ^^ my parents and grandparents found the show very nostalgic! The red and blue isnt a reference to the matrix, it's a reference to a game in an old Korean story where they would ask you to pick between a red and blue paper and they would kill you no matter what choice you made, read that in an interview with the writer and director of the show.
@CodyCha

It's from an old ghost story. In the old days, you would have to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom. So when you're in an outhouse a ghost would ask, do you want a blue toilet paper or red toilet paper? If you choose red, you're beheaded. If you choose blue, the ghost would suck your blood dry

People who have said “it’s just a job” have obviously never in their life suffered or have seen anyone suffer, or are very privileged. I’m 21 and I have seen how my parents suffered especially how we barely had enough to get by when the market crashed in 2008. I was 8 years old and knew that we were struggling. Never once complained about not having the newest gaming console or having new clothes instead having to wear my brothers old clothes. Even if it didn’t fit me yet as my brother is 5 years older than me. Luckily my father found another job but being an Mexican immigrant that only finished highschool in another country it’s not so easy to find a good paying job. People take jobs for granted but don’t realize once you’re older companies don’t want you especially if you have no education or degree. They will always pick the younger fresh out of highschool kid or younger person with any type of degree. Life only gets harder not easier. how you manage yourself will determine if it stops getting harder because even when life gets easier it’s still hard if you’re not careful you’ll lose everything

But here he’s our protagonist and I really love that. Gi-Hun is one of the most unique takes on a protagonist that I’ve seen in a very long time. in the marble game, Gi Hun tried to cheat the old man but nobody bat an eye but when sang woo did it, people go crazy. The glass game, Gi hun and the girl were too coward to push the guy over so all 3 of them could survive, so Sang Woo manned up and basically saved three of their lives by pushing the man over. If not for Sang Woo, the last 4 remaining players would be dead for no reason and no one woulda won the game.
@LegendarySparantus
@LegendarySparantus 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dom-bn1ru I guess Gi-Hun cheating the old man in the marble game was more acceptable because the old man was very old and is on the verge on death with his tumor. And he looked way sadder than the more secretive Sangwoo. On the other hand, Sangwoo cheated a young guy with a wife and very young child by guilt-tripping him, saying that he gave him money for the bus and told his team how to survive in the last minute, the thing with the money being very hypocritical because he didn't expect something in return at first and was being kind, and in the marble game he dares to remind Ali of that. And his final plan to isolate Ali was more calculated than Gi-Hun's more desperate cheating method. It's hard for me to remember Sangwoo's face when he was sad because he killed Ali unlike Gi-Hun who had his sadness more insistent et visible on camera.

Notice Gi Hun's expression seconds before they won thug war, he looked at his opponent who were about to die, he felt no pleasure, or relief, or happy, while others pull the line he looked at his opponents for seconds and felt sorry for them. And in the marble game he cried and felt broken during and after the game, unlike Sang Woo who kept feeding his animal brain, he even let Gi Hun to pick umbrella, he kept his reptilian brain ON, just like what the riches want, they were their animals/horses. Both cheated, but Gi Hun never lose his heart, almost when he wanted to kill Gi Hun but Sae Byeok stopped him, while Sang Woo just like animal went to killing mode since the 2nd game. In the last episode Gi Hun said "I'm not horse........I'm a human". Both were the same bassicaly, both fucked up, both cheated, both did their mom dirty, but one thing that seperates them is their heart, Sang Woo completely lost but Gi Hun still has a little of his heart, and if you still have it even a little it will grow if you let it grow.

What would you expect from someone who just witnessed his friends dying one by one and his childhood friend commit suicide in front of him? Do you expect him to just go home and be happy? The man has trauma and depression bcs of that, moreover I think his ptsd might be worse after the games and he already has one before he joined the games. Depression can make people do nothing basically. That last decision is also rational. They still have tabs on him. He didn't even immediately turn his back from his flight when he saw the salesman at the train station, he didn't board his flight after he knows that they still keep their tabs on him. @@felicia5027 Yeh I agree. People criticize him for prioritizing the hundreds of people that might die in the next game instead of his daughter who is living comfortably in the U.S without a problem. It is just part of his character, just like the time when he tried to save his dying friend and missed the pregnancy of his wife as a result because he felt that was more urgent. He is just that kind of person, it is both his strength and flaw. As Gi Han, he was so depressed after winning the game he didn't touch the money- we know that from the scene his brother visits his room. So the old man calls him a year later and does similar game with him, watching if someone will help a dying man. In that case though no one helped, so the old man proves this is the state of humanity and after making this point recruits him as the frontman.

We dont know for sure that he didn't take out any additional money between that 10,000 and when he meets with the banker. But I've only seen the show once, so I may not be remembering correctly. That said, it's hard to imagine him going through the trouble, considering the depression he was in. (Of course, I can't imagine him getting medical help, either, and those injuries would have needed some special care.) The other day, out of the blue, I wondered whether Il-Nam might have called the loan sharks off (assuming they were agents for him), or whether he just paid them off. He seems quite taken with the study of human nature (see that last "game"), and I can see him wanting Gi-Hun to live so that Il-Nam could watch and see what he'd do.

Ps- Gi-hun is my favorite, and the character I most relate to also.... I think the only other character I've felt such a "moral, LAWFUL " connection to, Is Rick Grimes from the Walking Dead. With the chance that you have already made it known, as I've not done my homework and checked since this is my second suggestion from your channel(I did follow though, 100%!!!!😆), I'm curious as to if you feel the same? Either way, please continue on! This channel and your thoughts have completely inspired and reinvigorated my love for this!

I just watched all the squid game episodes and then I watched several videos afterwards talking about the squid games. Yours were my favorite. It's getting repetitive, so I appreciate you saying in this video "bear with me" because you acknowledge that. Also, there are some people who do videos that make the tone of their voice go up and down and up and down, and it's really annoying. I was very glad that you talk normally. You did a good job analyzing the main characters. Thanks for the hard work

Great analyses that I would never think about. Just something to note- as a Korean- red crosses are ubiquitous throughout South Korea, as it's basically the main representation of a crucifix that you'd find for many churches. Some churches may favor different iterations of a crucifix, but the red light-up cross is the one you'll usually find the most. But regardless, the symbolism you've stated is probably something very important to note. Also I just got a little bone to pick with your pronunciation of the director's name. Enjoying all the videos about SG regardless.

I'm not sure about the whole red cross symbolism. Anyone who has been to Seoul can tell you that they are everywhere. Gihun character arch from fool to underdog hero is the classic protagonist transformation. It was concluded at the last scene when he decides his responsibility to stop the game was bigger than his commitment to his daughter in the US. After winning the games, he was too traumatized and shamed to fulfill his promises to the other players families (brother of 067 and mother of 218) he also lost his own mother and daughter because he was playing the games. He resorted to continuing his role as a drunken lethargic loser, only this time he was a rich loser. When he met 001 on his deathbed. He found the source of his torment, shame, and regret as the secret organizer of the games. He wanted to take his revenge on 001 but consistent to his character, he didn't want to use physical violence. 001 plays one last game with gihun, the stranger helping the street dweller. His prize for winning this last bet was 001 dies peacefully. Gihun did not have to compromise his morals once again for justice to be served, he was freed from the shame of winning the games. He left the dead 001 as a new man with a new drive to.make things right. He fulfill his promises and arrange to meet his estranged daughter. His pink hair is metaphorical transformation from squid game player to pink solder.

I just really want everyone to know at least the main character's name because it is not a hard name to pronounce for Americans. Some of the other names are understandably a little harder. Now all of that made him almost kill himself in the beginning because he couldn't live with it. Why no hate for Sangwoo though if we're criticizing a character's morality. Despite all of the failings of Gi-Hun it has been shown that underneath he still has a heart and does care for his family.
