We want to put some miles on this bike this year and learn about the model and how it rides. Although I undertook a few commissioning jobs last autumn, it's time to give the bike an oil service, which is a bit more complicated on these models. The plan was to try and complete it in time for a run out to the local monthly classic vehicle meeting for charity - see if that happened!

As a seventeen year old, this was my first proper motorbike, which I rode on L plates until I passed my test. I loved this little 250. My friends all had the Japanese 250's of the day and I was surprised at how it could hold it's own against all but the RD's. The engine would spin up to 10K, which helped in drag races. The only issue I had with the bike over the three years or so I rode it was the kickstarter dogs crumbling. I can't remember how many I had to replace. In the end, I perfected bump starting her and left the kickstarter for high days and holidays or when I wanted to impress. The handling was second to none I recall, she's so light and flickable. Yours sounds very sweet and looks lovely and clean. I hope you get to cover many troublefree miles on her. I'm on the lookout for a TR5T Trophy Trail, which as you know was a Triumph bitsa utilising the same frame but with a Daytona 500 engine shoehorned in. Back in the 70's, riding the 250, the Adventurer or Trophy Trail seemed like the holy grail of bikes. A friend had a B50SS not long after we passed our bike tests. The engine characteristics were so different from the peppy 250 as to be quite deceptive when out on the road. I recall glancing at the speedo on the B50 and being surprised at how fast I was going for the engine speed.

Thanks for the comment and fantastic anecdote. Yes I'm looking to put some more miles on the B25SS. I agree the TR5T is a great bike, but I've never ridden one. Best wishes with the search. Likewise I'm looking forward to comparing the rides when the B50SS is running. Thanks again.

hi angus, good to see you out on the b25, good to see no bad oil leaks b25 as it should be sounds good too not to much clatter, would be interesting to see what the ignition is set at and the advance unit advance degree, looks to be a very good bike like to see more of it.

Cheers John thanks for the interest and kind comment. It’s running electronic ignition which I didn’t realise until I popped the points cover off to check them! Apparently as well, the tappet clearances have been set by the Rupert Ratio method which reduces the top end noise - seems to work very well. There will be more vlogs on this soon when the weather perks up reliably(!).

I had one of these as my first bike. Bought from Leather and Simpson's in Sheffield and paid £220 for it. It was like the red and black ones but blue and white. Unfortunately my 17 year old self couldn't do the necessary to keep it running for more than a couple of days and I spent as much time pushing it as riding it. It probably was for the best because if I'd spent all my money on a Suzuki GT250 I like my mates did I would definitely gave crashed. Eventually I sold it to a friend who I believe still has it, but he moved away and I haven't seen him for years now. JWE 8J still shows up on a dvla check so it is probably still out there somehere.

Thanks the interest and the great anecdote - appreciated. My brother had one which we took to the IOM TT around 1980 and it was reliable. Conversely though, a friend had one and rode it to Cadwell Park one day when the battery went flat. However for the ride home it started fine but within a few seconds dropped a valve. That was the end of that.

What a cool machine!!! Changing the oil in the oil in frame machine was, and obviously still is, a pain in the ass. I would definitely check out what new and modern lubricants will work better since that machine was built 50+ years ago. Thanks for sharing.

Great to see this little machine on the road. I am a fan of the BSA unit singles. Indeed, I wish the new BSA had started with an update of these rather than the, to my eye, rather frumpy retro machine they came up with.

Nice to see you out and about again, mate. Must admit I've never seen a Gold Star 250SS before -- been away a while!!! Just what is the advantage (or otherwise!) of the oil-in-frame as opposed to the normal oil tank? Cheers.
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
Hi Phil - thanks. Well I'm no engineer but to my mind OIF advantages are more strength in the spine, less weight as no oil tank to carry, more room at the back of the engine for air filters/plenum chambers having to be introduced at the time, more surface area for cooling. Just my two penneth.

Hi Angus. Great to see you're out and about and enjoying the B25SS. You have Rupert Ratio to thank for it not being too rattly, as I set the valve clearances as per his method as explained in his book.

Hi Angus, are you going to upload anymore ride outs on the B25SS. Keen to see how yours runs in comparison to mine.
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus - yes I am but in the process of trying to resolve a battery charging issue which raised its ugly head during the BSA ride out a week ago as per community post pics, I seem to have embroiled myself into putting the electrics back to standard. Should be back on the road in a couple of weeks.
@marcusrogers5860
@marcusrogers5860 Жыл бұрын
@@BSAPowerSet good luck with the electrics. Be good to see how it performs when fixed. Couple of things to sort on mine (rear brake pedal travel and splutters only in 4th gear around 4500 revs?). Always learning about things with an older bike that's for sure 🤔
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
@@marcusrogers5860 Interesting - on my last ride out and getting to know the bike and testing it a bit further, it misfires at about 4500rpm. You can get through it in the lower gears and it’ll run cleanly higher up the rev range, but in 3rd or 4th you can’t power through it. So checking carb and ignition side. Plug was wrong type so have changed that but not tested yet.
@marcusrogers5860
@marcusrogers5860 Жыл бұрын
@@BSAPowerSet I have swapped plugs (ngk, champ and latterly an iridium). Same prob. I have really good power right through 1st 2nd and 3rd and revs, in 4th just splutters at mid rev range like it's running out of fuel around 55mph, speed drops off then I need to go into 3rd. Carb needle on 1 and 2...same.
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
@@marcusrogers5860 OK Marcus well at this stage let me describe my investigative steps currently in progress. It has to be fuel or ignition in my opinion. Fuel - check carb needle jet is clear, check float height, check no air leaks at carb flange, check tappet clearances. Ignition - check timing and strobe if possible, check battery condition and charging, new plug of correct grade (which you’ve done), check ignition lead and LV connections at coil and to points/capacitor/condenser, or electronic ignition components depending upon what you’re running.

Sounds really good! But how come it was okay to put the oil filler cap up near the headstock on the singles but down near the rear of the petrol tank on the twins? They lost a lot of capacity doing that on the twins but I read they were worried that people would confuse the filler with the petrol cap!
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. Good question. I don’t think we’ll ever know the real reason now. I’ve also read that it was to prevent frothing but then why wouldn’t that affect the singles? A mystery I agree.

Goldstar? Really - I have a B25B and its a Starfire, not a goldstar. Dont think mine has oil in frame tho, its a dry sump.
@BSAPowerSet
@BSAPowerSet Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert and thanks for the interest and comment. For the 1971 model year BSA redesigned the Starfire and created the B25SS Gold Star and the B25T Victor. Both only lasted for that year and were dropped for 72 when the factory got into financial difficulties.
