Way back when the triples were first raced in AMA pro class-c flat-tracking, the BSA and Triumph factory teams showed up at the Santa Rosa Mile in California with the new triples. It was the first time most of us had seen or heard them, and it was amazing. Way back when the triples were first raced in AMA pro class-c flat-tracking, the BSA and Triumph factory teams showed up at the Santa Rosa Mile in California with the new triples. It was the first time most of us had seen or heard them, and it was amazing. At that time, the Santa Rosa track had a corrugated metal fence outside the back straight, and that amplified the already awesome scream of the un-muffled triples (no one ran silencers back then. BTW, I despise silencers!) During practice sessions, the triples were so loud that we could hear them over every other bike, including the Harley, Triumph and BSA twins (I was riding a BSA.) Give that some thought for a second; ... while riding an unmuffled, megaphoned BSA 650, which was quite a screamer itself, I could clearly hear the triples, from hundreds of feet away. That was LOUD! And besides shear volume, the triples had a beautiful tone to them when they were at full-tilt, sort of like a twin on steroids, to borrow a tired phrase. That was the day that Dave Aldana, who was BSA factory sponsored, though he was still a Junior and in a battle for the points lead with Triumph factory rider Don Castro, managed to absolutely destroy his triple in a crash on the back straight during practice. He walked away, slowly, as what was left of his bike was carted back to the pits, about half the size it was before it was compacted .

Heard them at Daytona in 1971 - most impressive sound of them all. 'Elegant' might be fitting.

I saw Percy Tait at Castle Combe in 1968 ? on the Works 500cc Daytona, and then for the final race “ the unlimited “ he came out with the works Trident, a screaming monster that smashed the lap record from 88 mph to 93 mph.

There are a couple of Rob North Rockets here in Oz. They've been killed off by vastly oversized CB750 Hondas which dominate the Period 4 class. The adrenalin is flowing again ! If I saw those things out racing, I couldn't resist having a go at them.

English racer Paul Smart once commented that even though the Kawasakis and others he rode later may have been faster, his Triumph Trident triple had the best all round combination of speed, power, braking & handling.

One wonders what would have happened had there been a watercooled version of the these 3s since cooling was their Achilles heel.

What is the purpose of the belt running down the middle of the fuel tank on the bike on the left?
@whalesong9996 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that strap holds the fuel tank on. Honda had similar set-ups on their gp machines back in the '60s, an aluminum strap with cushion underneath. I built a Honda gp replica out of a CB-160 in the early '70s and had to craft that strap for a similar purpose to hold on a CR-93 fuel tank.
@ronanrogers41275 жыл бұрын
Graham Clayton ...it’s a quick release tank strap, otherwise they had two bolts at the front and one at the rear.
