In my opinion, Erwin Smith is the best character in Attack on Titan, and I'll explain why in this video. We will attempt to do a character analysis on the 13th commander of the survey corps, btw ik I butchered the pronunciation sorry (눈_눈) ). After season 3, I think he became the most popular side character of this anime, but I'm not sure about that. There is no particular deep topic in this video, just fanboying and some random memes imbetween.

@@bstylia14 Your English is excellent brother. Especially if it's not your first language. Don't let people make you feel otherwise just because of a very minor mistake. I'd say most people "faultfinding" your dialogue, aren't able to speak multiple languages. So they probably don't understand how difficult it is to learn a foreign language and dialect. I enjoyed your video btw and I respect your humility. (I've heard other places around the world dont view humility/being humble as a positive trait. So I wanted to clarify that it is a very positive characteristic to me.) Anyway, you've got a sub from me.

Erwin was almost in every episode and I still couldn't get enough of him😍 He was the BEST character from the anime, sure we all love Levi but let's be real Erwin went through a lot more and his way of thinking was no other.

There's this one thing you may have missed. In his final CHAAAARRRGEEE, he looked like he doesn't want to be there, like he knew he's going to die there and then. It can mean either the fear of death itself, which is natural, or maybe also he really doesn't want to die. Regardless, I love your character analysis, I nod to every word you said like a fangirl myself.

Yea, the best thing about Erwin is that he's human. He doesn't have the supernatural strength of Levi, nor the titan shifting power of Eren, nor the genius of Armin. He's just a man with sheer fu*king will (John Wick reference xd)

thank you for making this video!! erwin's my favourite too, and it's sad to see how widely misunderstood he is in the fandom (i guess that's the price to pay for being such a distant/unrelatable character who's an unreliable narrator of his own thoughts due to his guilt). i always love seeing other erwin fans' analysis of him bc he really is so fascinating

I feel like Isayama killed Erwin to take the easy route for writing. Had Erwin lived Attack On Titan would have gotten more deep in politics, more world building and etc. The politics from the timeskip was underwhelming Paradis government was incompetent and made fullish gambles. Erwin was the same guy that indirectly usurped the former government Pyxis, Zachley and Nile and the old government were pawns in his chest game all in order to reclaim wall Maria and find out the truth everything he did had a meaning. If Erwin lived he would have done the most logical thing instead of going to your enemy who wants your resources and the Founding Titan he might tried to establish and build relationships with Marley’s enemies. Everyone talks about the outside world hating eldians but people change and will do anything to save their countries. Marley has too many enemies we heard that like 2-3x Hange and Armin displayed incompetence. Erwin should have lived but Isayama didn’t want to write a complex plot.

Fun fact: in an official document regarding Erwin's wishes he admitted that if he had to live in peace times all he would have wanted was a quiet life in the mountains. Possibly in a cabin. This hurts.

To be fair, he isn´t flawless. He just doesn´t get a lot of moments where we can see him as a person, not just the commander. Also pretty sure the fear is quite visible on his face when he rides to his death.

"His selfish reason of wanting to learn the truth was gradually taken over by a selfless goal: the salvation of mankind". I got the complete opposite from reading the manga. When he joins the Survey Corps he realizes he is the only one with a selfish goal. He is ashamed by this and hides his motivations from his comrades. As he becomes the commander he never shakes his Imposter Syndrome. Even in the end, when giving a completely honest speech, he considers himself a con-man and liar. He feels guilty for the deaths of his soldiers too, as he imagines himself standing atop a mountain of corpses. People he feel he tricked into dying for his selfish goal. Since his goal of learning the truth and the goals of the Survey Corps largely overlap he could justify his actions to himself, but he still felt like a fraud. When Levi doesn't want him on the mission he bluntly states that him learning the truth is more important to him than the succes of humanity. He later mentions to Levi that without that Drive though, he probably would have preferred death as an easy solution. This suggests he has suicidal thoughts as a result of his guilt. Ultimately, when there is no other option available for him BUT to die heroically, he still cannot choose to do so on his own. He lets Levi order him to abandon his dream and die for the salvation of mankind instead. Erwin smiles because for the first time, he is free from being a slave to his obsession (the Kenny speech) and gets to die like a true Survey Corps commander. This is why Levi chooses Armin over Erwin. Erwin was finally free, let him rest. (Freedom being the center theme of this series and all that.) Erwins struggles are further explored through Reiners character. Another person who felt like a fraud, feels the weight of responsibility for many deaths, feels like a con-man and has a death wish.

I love this. I will probably forever be bitter that Erwin wasn't given the serum, but a less selfish part of me can recognise that he was in a lot of emotional pain and was probably happy that he got to rectify some of his guilt by dying a hero's death.

He started his journet out in the corps as someone who will use the soldiers to reach his goal of finding out whats under the basement, at the moment of his death, he realised through out the years he became something he was acting as ( a true leader), he even said the basement and the truth he has been searching for his whole life is a few meter away from him but he chose to save armin as he considered him to be a better candidate for collosal titan over him, at that moment he gave his childhood dream of proving his father right because he wasn’t the selfish person anymore, he was the captain and leader who will value his righteousness over anything including his dreams.

@@bstylia14 To say that Erwin doesn't have any purpose to live after the basement is not true , firstly because it does not go with his personality and less with his ideology. His dream was always to know what was outside the walls and he already had a plan in case it was a threat. In episode 12 of season 3 part 1, Levi asks Erwin what he would do after he learned the truth ... and he replies, "Eliminate all threats because outside the walls, there seems to be someone waiting for the Titans to kill everyone, of course the answer to who is in the basement.” Good video by the way.
