Its a shame BTCC was split between two ideas in 2001. They should have scrapped trying to produce a budget car with a super touring look and just gotten fully behind the production class

2001 was a poor season, Charlie cox doesn't sound interested until the final few rounds. Its incredibly badly together compared to the 90s reviews. Plato/muller battle saved the season.

I know Super Touring got too expensive and unsustainable by the end, but this new formula just didn't do it for me. Dreadful season with thin grids, only the needle between Plato and Muller late on give it any semblance of respectability

Fantastic upload. I put this on the other day intending to just watch a bit, but ended up watching all of it! I used to own this on VHS back in the day. Plato and Muller had an incredible duel and it was only after reading Plato's recent book that I realised quite how toxic it all got.

The last two races at Brands Hatch were excellent, unfortunately the rest of the season before was awful imo. Thin grids and a Super Touring hungover (loved that era) sadly ensured this season was a dud for many

@@allthekingshorses7178 it was certainly different in 2001 wasn't it. The grids were really thin, but thankfully things improved in that regard in 2002. It's great that the BTCC has grids of around 30 these days and the racing is entertaining, but as you rightly say, the Super Touring era was brilliant and we'll never see that again.
@allthekingshorses7178

We know Super Touring was expensive and unsustainable by the end, Ford's budget for the 2000 season was insane by touring car standards, but I always think the series lost something magical after the era ended.

@@allthekingshorses7178 you're right. Back in the 90's all the big makes were involved weren't they, plus some high profile drivers. What bought it home to me about how different it is now is that mechanics are mostly contractors now, whereas back in the day, they were employed directly by Williams Renault Engineering or whoever.

Funnily enough I was at the Knockhill meeting in 1999, and was lucky enough to chat away to James Thompson, he mentioned then that budgets were completely out of control and manufacturers just couldn't justify the cost of competing. Look at Ford's budget for 2000 and you'll see what I mean

James Thompson disappeared into obscurity in Europe driving a Lada shortly after this. Sad. He was an incredible talent. I wish he'd stayed in the UK racing with Plato and Neal. He was easily as fast as them.

@@lth1072 after BTCC he got a works contract driving for Alfa in 05 and then SEAT in 06 in WTCC and did pretty well. Had a brilliant season with Alfa in 07 when they didn't have manufacturer support. I don't think it was bad choices after that...manufacturer seats in WTCC had already started dwindling by then. i don't blame him for the Lada seat, it was most likely either that or run a year old car with a privateer team and pay for the seat.

I don't think some of Platos moves were clean that's for sure but in fairness this particular season seemed too be tit for tat and alot of drivers were showing their dirty side. Muller had a habit of blaming people for his mistakes and acting like a bit of a brat on occasion but that's touring cars for you.
