Here is an interesting video demonstrating the differences between a heavily worn Shure M44-7 Cart/Styli combination vs. a Shure Whitelabel cart/styli combination that has had very little wear (just enough to break it in) on one of our test pressings for Black Tiger Recordings BTR-013: DJ Lithium - "Hellspeak" (Demon Mix).
We got some very interesting results between the two carts.Watch the full length of the video to read about the recording setup and our observations.
DJ Lithium's "Hellspeak" will be available online through various record stores, March 2014. Both mixes of "Hellspeak" are vinyl exclusives and probably always will be. You can however, get both mixes of "Harvest Moon" which appear on this release through various online digital music stores including iTunes right now.

You're Welcome! Earlier today I listened again to the Hellspeaks 12" inch Demon mix. No joke that jam is really a "body mover"! That jam could even be considered a tribal, calypso, soca, house track! Because of your creativity with the rhythms and percussions in the track. Damn good work Dj Lithium! Be safe be well!

Shure M44 sounds better than the White Label to me but, of course, it is so hard to hear the difference betwenn the two setups just listening the sound via KZfaq. Sorry for my awful english... All the best and thanks for share this test with us! Augusto (Brazil)

I used to use Ortofon carts in the 1990's but then changed to Shure M44G and never looked back. The Shure M44G carts are amazing. they have better sound quality than any Ortofon i've heard or used, they hold the groove better for scratching and they funnily enough last longer before they need replacing.

Whitelabel is overall more refined cartridge. There is nearly no sibilance distortion. When compare these two carts M44-7 has got higher output voltage than Whitelabel. M44-7 9.5 mV Whitelabel is 6 mV. So may be you hear more bass pump on M44-7 because of the higher output. But after long listening sessions there is no listening fatigue caused by Whitelabel. So for me whitelabel more Hi-Fi than M44-7. However there is no sibilance distortion on Whitelabel but lack of high ferq information also! It would be better that there has to be an elliptical stylus option but unfortunately no elliptical stylus made for Whitelabel.

The Whitelabel is exactly as advertised : flat and natural response.. The M-44-7 is exactly as advertised: colored sound with enhanced bass and highs (which was grating to my ears, but to others ears may seem louder or busier, but that's just my own preference). Both do exactly as they're supposed to do, and very well. None is better than the other. I prefer the laid back sound of the whitelabel, made me want to crank it up and it sounded great at high volume. The M-44-7 made me want to turn it down and hurt my ears. But again, this is just my ears.

Flashpoint922 Well its colored because its worn out. I bought replacements a few weeks ago. The sound quality improvement is amazing. I will try and record a test of that soon.

So update I have a brand new Shure WHTLB stylus on my Technics 1200 and my 1210 needs needle replacement. Gonna try the Shure M-44-7 to compare back and forth. I'll report my finds here if you'd like.

+Flashpoint92, since the needle of my whlb broke i did an experiment with sucess: I took the needle from my m47-7 cartridge and inserted in the whlb. You know what: high output but softer, more clear. I supose the whlb engine (from outside looks like the same as the m97xE) is better, newer then the m44. After cutting the wings of the n44-7 needle I have the right overhang: 5,2 cm. You can either try the n97xE needle in the whlb, but the output was to low... Cheers!

This video is swaying me to replace my WHLBs and go back to 44s. I almost never play ''booth'' gigs, only ''right next to the P.A.'' gigs. So bass feedback often ruins my game. The stronger signal of the 44s is what I need.

Actually the whitelabel is brand new and thus is clearer for that reason. The M44 even heavily worn is the superior cartridge because of the volume output over all and bass response.
@andreaxyz3959

DJ Lithium the whitelabel is clearer coz the "color" given by its manufacturer follows a different eq and purpose. It also allows the dj to work with the eqs more extensively...

Hi DJ Lithium, I just read your msg.and thanks for keeping me inform about your next upcoming 12" inch tracks. And I'm 1000% sure they'll be "Body Bangers Cuts" to make people move! I've produced on my cheap Akai Professional XR20 Beat Production Center, 6 tracks in 2013. I would like to know if you would be interested in hearing at least one of them and give me your honest professional opinion. Maybe, we could collaborate on producing a track together that of course will be on your label. DJ Lithium Brother I've always had the feeling that I can make a song and sees what happens! When you have time, let me know what you think.

Nice track. For a better sound, you should use a record stabilizer to make the sound more detailed ;-)
@battlestarvfx

That's not really going to work in a DJ scenario - although I do use the 45RPM adapters when I mix, using them as a "clutch" of sorts. You can see this in my "TimeCode" video.

DJ Lithium I realize that after I posted the comment that it's not gonna work on the dj scene ;-) Anyway, I have a Technics SL-23 TT using Shure's M97XE cartridge and stylus. Also, where can I find that album? Thanks.

4:52 and 5:10 moments where right channel fades out for some millisecs. These moments doesn't exist on the 2nd system. Volume difference is really disappointing. Left channel sounds louder on both systems, approx 0,5 dB difference. I think this 2nd shure is slightly more tonal-balanced than the first one You should give us a digital playback in the end to compare it. Highs sound a bit weird in this mix, dirty and without upper parts. What happened with 16kHz+ ? Was it on purpose to cut these upper parts? I hope these tracks were recorded / rendered in 24 bits not only dithered to 24 bits in mastering :) Last but not least It's a good track :)
@battlestarvfx
@battlestarvfx 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Slash. The momentary "fade out" is because the first test is recorded on an INCREDIBLY worn styli. That was the point of this test. To compare how much difference and where it is between a very worn M44 and a brand new WHLB. I actually render my tracks out at 32bit 88khz and then provide them to the cutting engineer at 24bit 88khz after final mastering in wavelab with a few snazzy plugins. To be honest there isn't a lot of 16Khz+ stuff in this track because its mostly made up of samples in the first place. Most of which have had those upper highs cut off in the first place.
@DirectVinyl
@DirectVinyl 10 жыл бұрын
DJ Lithium Hey. Maybe It's really worn out but I think this stylus wasn't abused on scratches. Sounds great anyways. I think these fades will be gone when you add some extra weight to the tonearm or even clean the needle / edgy connectors with pure IPA Cleanser. Like i said before, there is a 0,5 dB channel difference, left is louder. Is it the same thing on digital? It seems Shure M44-7 is still the best system on the market, don't you think? Good that it was produced properly but It was made using software only right? I think it's worth to buy a sampler. 180 degree sound difference especially when It's properly cut on vinyl. Anyways It's not overcompressed like 95% of actual stuff and thats the best thing!
