The Soviets based the BTR-80 on the BTR-70 APC. It has a 260-hp, V-8 turbocharged, water-cooled, diesel engine. The reconfigured rear portion of the hull accommodates a new, single engine. The Soviets removed the roof chamfers of the modified BTR-70, raised the rear, and squared off the rearward-sloping engine compartment. Standard equipment include TNPO vision blocks, optical devices TNP-B and TKN-3 for the driver and commander, an OU-3GA2M infra-red search light, six 81mm smoke grenade launchers 902V "Tucha", a radioset (R-173 or R-163-50U), an intercom and hydrojets.

That is the most beautiful piece of machinery I have seen. Hard to believe that this thing was out before the USA Striker, yet the BTR seems just as good if not better. I would love to go off-roading in that thing. I think I would trust my life in that APC more than I would in U.S. Apc. Great Video,. I hope to see more video footage of this APC in the future.

I've heard from a US Army officer a firsthand account from a Georgian army officer. Apparently in a battalion-sized night attack on entrenched Russians, US-trained Georgian troops inflicted some 180 Russian casualties for a handful of their own. Its quite impressive to chew up two whole infantry companies in one night.

that wobble is the barrel resonating upon being fired and cycling, if we are referring to the same thing. if you pause the video, you will see that it returns to the original position in time to fire the next shot as for not being able to hit a skyscraper - 2:42 now, about 3:12, notice that the vehicle is initially climbing the obstacle by scraping the overhang. it impacts the obstacle with the body. notice on the preceding clip where it's driving over rough terrain the gun is not wobbling.

as for the remote guns, you are right, they are remote operated, but that also means that they are remote fed, meaning that they have to be reloaded from OUTSIDE of the vehicle, as opposed to the russian BPU and BPPU turrets that have an internal ammunition feed, capable of the exact same performance and optics with a better field of view. The new BPPU is stabilized which some RWS are not and it carries multiple weapons, not just one.

and to add to that, the BTR at least has a back up 7.62, which the stryker doesn't and has the ability to add a 30mm grenade launcher too. plus the ammunition feed for the 30mm or 14.5mm and the 7.62mm and even the optional 30mm grenade launcher is internal, meaning no unlucky bastard has to climb up on the vehicle to replace the spent ammo box and belt every 50 or 100 rounds.

actually, they do. depending on the exhibition, which is usually done as a competition of designs for possible purchase, but most of them have the vehicles and weapons crewed by the potential buyer nations own crew unless specified otherwise and ammunition used is the training or live ammunition provided by the country, unless they have none in stock

The huge number of weapons systems is a liability in itself, each increasing the technical skills needed by the gunner as well as his maintenance tasks. And you're right, survivability is -not- a feature of this series, which is made more crucial given the vehicles high threat profile.

That tree was a small one, a sapling, but not quite. Thus popping up because the tree's wood is still flexible and not matured. I'm not going to go into tree structure, etc, because that would be stupid and useless, I'm pretty positive you have enough smarts to compute the answer to why that tree poped right back up.

the Patria AMV is arguably the best western 8x8 APC currently available. in terms of how it compares to the BTR-80, it is probably a a little better, though how much dependent on the version. it has a very powerful engine, is amphibious (unless you get the heavy, non-amphibious version) has a fairly spacious troop compartment and when they say it is modular, they are not lying. what it lacks, in the APC version compared to the BTR-80 is armament and that the hatches are a little awkward.

I wish the US would just by some JUST to try it. Yeah it's not stealthy, but it goes everywhere and is heavily armored. It's a beefier LAV3. The stryker is a piece of crud compared to REAL wheeled APC's like this and the LAV it's based off of. Not to mention that the Stryker's armor is only 'resistant' to 14.7mm gunfire. Meaning two or more of these and you're a goner.

You might be right, but from what I read today there has just recently been a big revamp of how the Russian eng. industry functions. Something about unifying these large industries under one federal one, this is mainly in the aerospace sector but Im sure this will also include others. Interesting thing to note is that a Russian aerospace company supplies Boeing and a dozen other aircraft with precision titanium parts, so the there is def. no qaulity issues with the Russian eng. industry.

no, they take their own personnel, give them some basic training, often at the hands of the actual demonstration crews (in order to assure non-biased testing and how well their own personnel adapt to the new machine) and they use ammo they procured and tested (also, to ensure unbiased testing and have a basic benchmark)

@patrikasLTL Which are miniature BMP-3's, or vice versa, carrying only a handful of dismounts. Not being better than the Stryker, I don't see your point in mentioning that. Yes. Russian infantrymen are issued shovels and would likely dig foxholes rather than sleep in pup tents during the night. The Kornet, being a crew-served tripod ATGM, could surely manage that. Javelins, being man-portable, is issued to the Anti Armor Specialist in each of a Stryker rifle platoon's three squads.

Google for Stryker criticism. The family simply doesn't do what it was intended for(and the whole idea was flawed to begin with): 1) It has no strattegical transportability advantage over Bradley or even Abrams. 2) It is not protected against any kind of threat except firearms. 3) Modular system doesn't work because conversion is too difficult in the remote theatre(may as well bring Abrams instead of MGS). 4) Low TechSpecs of the LAV chasiss. And that is only the begining.

@Boljev6 Some 15 pieces of BTR-90 were made in 20 years since first prototype was revealed back in 1992, as I remember. Russian Armed Forces did not field it. They require new APC. The project is started and called "Bumerang". In order to save money I suggest Russians to buy licence to produce modern Western design APCs from the West (Patria, Piranha), or from Ukraine (BTR-4).
