This song is based on a quote from a dancer from the 1930s. Martha Graham said "a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” The song is about their fear of losing their passion for music. 💜💜💜💜

It's interesting the conclusion you arrived at with the end of this one because Suga has a song called Shadow that is spot on to what you were saying 😊💜 As other ARMYs have said in the comments, this song talks about their fear of losing the passion for music

Yes. A great way to distinguish between regular lyrics and the nonsense-ones is, that the latter is called "auto-generated" - they don't make sense since they only kinda work in the same language... it write what it hears. But if it just has regular lyrics, it'll just say e.g. "English".

Ohhhhh i love the conversation. Clearly, they opened up this topic using their MOTS7 album it's all about or own darkness. Like yes, no one is godly enough to have no shadows deep inside them, but at the end of rhe day, we embrace our own shadows & accept that it's part of us. 💯

70 year old Army here. The Armys explanations are correct about the quote from famed choreographer Martha Graham. "A dancer dies twice. When they lose their passion for dance, that will be their first death and the most painful." The struggle with the shadow dancing in the background signifies a struggle holding on to passion. In the end when the shadow disappears, he is still holding on to the passion, at least for the time being. Suga and RM reference their "first death" in the lyrics.

The captions on the official music videos on the HYBE and 1theK channels ARE ACCURATE! If it automatically chooses auto-generated captions, you need to choose 'English' (not auto-generated) captions in the settings. Also, Doolset, Doolset is great for lyrics. BTS /BIG HIT/HYBE captions are always correct but keep in mind, there is a loss in translation between Korean and English so some things might make not make sense to americans off the bat but thats only due to different cultures. But BTS/BIG HIT/HYBR included captions are always on point. Not the crappy auto generated ones.

You did get the right idea with the shadow as this is one of the 'shadow' songs from their Map of the Soul series based on Carl Jung's theory of the Shadow - Persona - Ego. As others have said this song is based on the Martha Graham quote. Martha Graham was the creator of Modern/Contemporary dance, hence them dancing barefoot in the MV. Black Swan is also referencing the ballet Swan Lake, hence the white suits with the black feathers taking over as the White Swan is starting to transform into the Black Swan (her shadow). The second half of the MV doesn't include the white suits at all. Their shadows have fully taken over. They also used auto tune a lot more in this song to give the soundscape impression of a voice coming up from the deep, under water. This is what makes us fall deeper and deeper in love with BTS, the way they use other artists and thinkers and bring attention to these others who some people might never have been exposed to before. They want us as fans to think and interpret things using our own experiences and knowledge while also allowing us to gain new knowledge and ideas.

As far as English captions go... If it says auto-generated, those are not translations into English. Those are far people who are hearing-impaired. It's designed to look for and recognize English words. That's why certain captions don't make any sense. Always check at the beginning when you turn them on.

Jungkook is wearing a corset, symbolizing the confines he lives under, he leans over the ledge under the constrains of the corset but does not fall, and then sits at the end constrained by the corset and I think the shadow is supposed to look like it goes into him, and he does not jump or even lean over the edge but accepts it and walks away.

Thanks for sharing this reaction. Love hearing your thoughts. So they Map of the Soul albums had an underlying foundation from Karl Jung's psychological principles and philosophies, including the idea that each person has a persona(s) and ego(s) and shadow(s) and the concepts of conscious and unconscious elements that make them up - that yes everyone has a shadow within them, the things they don't or won't want to acknowledge or address, but to be the person we really want or need to be in the most mature and developed version of ourselves we have to acknowledge the shadow and recognize that part of ourselves. There are 3 solo songs that dive deeper into that concept - RM has Persona, SUGA has SHADOW and j-hope has EGO. This is one of the total group songs that speaks to this whole concept. Anyway - encourage you to react to them as well. There is also a European dance troupe who did a performance video for this song that is purely artistic and interpretive (it is official and released through BigHit as a collaboration with them during the roll out of this song and the Map of the Soul: 7 album. Go eat! LOL Enjoy!

RM wrote this song inspired by Martha Grahams quote in addressing what an artist goes through when they no longer produce or able to perform their art. In retrospect, with RM’s release of his solo album it was around this time that he was struggling with writing songs. Most likely the years of training, performing, and creating none stop was getting to him and started experiencing burnout. The pressure must been tremendous. Up until June, 2022 they didn’t have a break to do just for themselves individually. Even their vacations and staycations was work as they were being filmed and was on schedules. They had fun but not really depressurized.

Their entire album, "Map of the Soul 7", which this song is on, is a concept album from top to bottom based on the theories of Carl Jung. The Intro, Interlude, and Outer are titled, "Persona", "Shadow", and "Ego". I HIGHLY recommend checking out the entire album. :). They also have a song titled "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" based on the book "Demian" by Herman Hesse.

Because their focus on Map of the Soul was Carl Jung’s theories, they have songs representing the Ego, The Persona, and the Shadow. The goal is to face and integrate the Shadow. Treat it like a friend not an enemy or it will manifest in issues but it isn’t bad in and of itself. The only thing I don’t agree with is saying that you get Bipolar from staying in the dark too long. That is a little like blame the victim when happy sunny people can have mental illness as well. I don’t think you meant it that way, it’s just the wording. You definitely don’t want the Dark Passenger driving, but it’s always in the car. Nice reaction. I do like that you put so much thought into it. 💜

there is a video on the meaning of black swan. RM read a quote by Martha Graham, a once great and famous dancer. She said, " when a dancer realizes they can no longer perform they die their first death. I think that's what this is about. A few years ago, BTS took us on an artistic journey, when this song was released. They introduced 'Black Swan' Art Film. performed by MN Dance Company This Art Film was released a few weeks before BTS released their version of the song. The MN Dance Company release was stunning and so intriguing, to say the least. I was just so beautiful.

To me the lyrics were saying - what if the music no longer inspires me - what would I do if I could no longer write music? this would be my first death. As an artist this is a fear. The Black Swan ballet and later movie was based on a dancer’s fear of not being able to dance. BTS have taken this and applied it to their own fears. Yes you can apply this to other things in your own life and relationships as well.

Ahh honestly watched like 4 reaction and everytime is the same with lyrics, I don't understand your problem with CC, and I saw on all videos I watched that people tried to explain it... When you watch on official channel Hybe or official channel BTS (called: bangtantv). CC is correct (if they are if not then you don't put and look some were else for translations), so you should simply click button. Nothing hard really, I also think that people make to much fuss and really make all this chaos for mess your head. This are CC that company puts there. Official ones, that transtators that are hired make for videos. And Yes I hear you when You said that some people say they are not totally correct, but it isn't about good or wrong, but about how much detalied they are. It is true that some are less "good" and there is a reson, bc company puts it for GP so they are a little simpler then translations that some native korean speaker put out for fans. And as Army we like this detalied one bc there are a lot explenation around worlds, bars, verses, metafor, references, etc, that sometimes can't really be translate to english bc there is not equivalent, so company simplifide them so people will understand song lyrics, and we as fans read them too, when we watch videos, but letter we look into this detalied ones. So people that say that some CC on official channel videos are weird or wrong, it is bc they are a little into deep meaning (and maybe want to much from new people from the start). And I honestly don't think at your "level" of knowing and getting to know band it is needed - this detalied ones. Like you can always look into this things later if you want but for now official cc are good. And I think from 2015 for sure MV have CC. Some ealier maybe too and you can use them and don't worry. And I appreciate your reactions and subsequent discussions. But today with this song, it's like I'm listening to opinion and thoughts about a completely different song. And what you said is true of course, about dark and light side, and sure You can see this themes in this song. So I don't mean like you are wrong or something, and everyone can have their interpretation... But here in this song you have in lyrics that they are worried they will loss passion and this will feel like dead to them, bc music and all things around it is all they have. So, what you said didn't really fit the lyrics and what is in the song. But sure fit a vibe they were showing and MV alone. Like black and white clothes, if you look closse, white ones have black in them too, bc you can't really be all white... And song is called black swan, there is a lot meanin behind it, and if you think about ballet Swan lake and story there... Ahh also I saw that on screen You wrote that people said that they had hard time when this come out, but hard time for everyone is different for sure, and there ware certian things that they feld and happened. They had hard time, first bc they get so much fame that come with big wave, and bigger and bigger, and second they were in place that they feel stagnat bc of all things, they worked hard for so many year, they had few months break in 8 years, they were worried if they will have enough passion, to make music, to perform, to life to all that expectations people have... There of course were different things that they had gone thro that they shered more or less... Individual grow too... So they put all this feelings in this album, with conclusion that they are ready for more after some break and recharging, and we have this time now, that they do what they want, solo work, collabs, etc, and slowly go to do their military time. For me this song is about acceptance of all shadows that we have and that is always darker side or darker parts that makes us us, and they have to be there to makes as full person. But yeah thanks for your time and reaction. I hope you had good time!

I understand your frustration. We were told the meaning beforehand as what was stated on that bit of overlay text. We also used the english captions from the official hybe video and put them into our captions. As for the discussion for us, it's more of what the song means to us. Music is art and is subjective. To me, it meant a shadow, or black halo that is in everyone, and how it's almost like a tool we use to cope, distract, or lose sight of our path. As artists, i promise you they write the meaning of the song for them for people to connect to, but its very important that people connect from different angles and perspectives cause it makes it that much more beautiful. I'm sorry we aren't exactly what you're looking for. That's ok, too. We are all in this world trying to find what makes us happy, laugh, and love and make us think. It is a beautiful life no matter the obstacles.

I liked the way you broke it down to a different conclusion and the theory you talked about could also be considered a good interpretation of this song. Bts addresses this idea a lot as well to talk about the dark side of u. In fact Map of the soul : persona and Map of the soul: 7 also talks about the concept of finding your iner self and an on going battle between the dark side and the bright side of u. I think you would really enjoy those two albums specially MOTS:7. I'm sure armys already talked about the other conclusions that were often talked about according to the concept but in case i can add sth more i would talk about it in my own language. This song talks about bts's passion for music. It refers to the movie Black swan which is also about lossing that side of u that coexists with your life in this case for bts is music. If there is a day they can't find the passion or the reason to be who they are today and no song makes their heart beat anymore, that's when they have died for the first time. Black swan is also a symbol of an unfortunate event that happens so sudden you can't adapt yourself to it. For example if a dancer suddenly becames paralyzed. Black swan itself has a lot of different symbols but this particular one i found more accurate to this song. According to the other video they put out before the MV that is a group of people dancing contemporary it might also be the meaning of u taking control of your dark side and drive it in a way that benefits you. Overall i really enjoyed your break down to this song. Thank you 💜

this song is from the Map Of The Soul 7 album and the shadow is a very prominent symbol in it. there is even a song Shadow, which also was a comeback trailer (first song and mv that come before the album as a promo) for the MOTS7 in Black Swan we see a lot of shadows behind the boys, many of them are from projectors that light up the stage. the more light falls on the stage, the more prominent artist's shadow gets, right? now the shadow is connected to the Carl Jung's psychology. simply, the shadow is whatever we don’t want to know about ourselves, suppressed content in the unconscious mind. so that can be fears or doubts or insecurities, smth like this. so the more your persona, your presence grows, the heavier those shadows become, that's why bts went on the path to say you need to accept that those are part of you so it stops swallowing you black swan particularly was written about fear of losing your passion. that was 2020, an album right before the pandemic, the one bts were planing to release before announcing they are taking rest of group promotions. that only happened in 2022 tho because covid held that back. but in 2020 june they released an hour long video where they discuss what they are feeling over the dinner and admitted that they were experiencing burn out since that time, since Black Swan, that they run out of things to say as a group and the question "do i even like music anymore?" loomed over them. and in 2020 still before the solo album RM released he said the feeling that music might not be his first go-to or priority at this point of life scared him, because that is what he dedicated his life to

Thank you for this video, this is such a beautiful track 💜 BTS definitely acknowledge a shadow in this song but they don't seem to accept it as they don't feel ready for it. They know an end to their artistry will come at some point and they find comfort in confirming that the end has not happened yet and they still have passion, but they have not embraced the shadow. The track Interlude: Shadow by Suga explores the shadow more deeply, this time in relation to his dreams, and the losses that come with it... In my opinion, it's a masterpiece. The shadow is very present as a concept in media, but it's often quite black and white (i.e. hero Vs villain) and also, it's rare to see the shadow being integrated. Suga managed to write lyrics that perfectly represent the concept of Shadow, with a realistic narrative and a beautiful example of shadow integration (in the full song, the mv only has part of the song). It's one of my absolute, most favourite songs of all songs I've ever heard... everything from the music, the lyrics, the delivery to the video, creates a full package around this concept, it's so good. Sorry for the long comment, I'm a psychotherapist and a massive Jungian nerd, this is the stuff that I can't shut up about 🤣 you don't have to react to this song, I just wanted to share because I liked your thoughts on shadow!

Black Swan is from their Map Of the Soul 7 album, conceptionally its based off Carl Jung's psychology of the self. He explores that dark side as "The shadow". Black Swan on this album fits into that theme of "the shadow". But yeah, the song it's self is about losing a passion, and there are various reasons that a person can loose their passion for something. I relate to this song because there are many things in life that I once enjoyed that I can no longer find happiness from, it worries me but I take it one day at a time. This song doesn't just stop at the melancholy, but reaches in to find the strength to continue going, by the end the subject found that passion again. We can all hope to find it for ourselves.

If you guys are still looking into solo rap music videos from bts my suggestions are: RM: Joke or Persona Suga: Daechwita or Agust D J-Hope: Daydream or 1verse(only a lyric video exists because there was never an official release for KZfaq) I know in the last video you requested primarily music videos, but for J-Hope's case I feel 1verse is a great show of his rap in a solo setting. I look forward to more videos from you guys.

the guide that you guys watched is from may 2022, just want to say that after Jhope released his 1st solo album Jack In The Box (INCREDIBLE AND VERSATILE), Jin released a single The Astronaut before going to the army (amazing vocals, melody, music video AND lyrics!! produced by coldplay AND he performed it with them in their concert in Argentina), RM released his 1st solo album Indigo (so deep, with deep lyrics and amazing meanings!! I love it so much). We're still waiting for the other members solo albums or mixtapes or singles (beside gift songs and OSTs) BTS and Coldplay built a beautiful friendship after their collab My Universe (its a hit with warm lyrics, it played SO MUCH in the radio here in Brazil and in a lot of stores too), I hope they work together again, after jin's solo.

Hello, I think you're right, why all that about embracing the shadows that are inside of you, It is the themes that they touched on in that era, where they developed the psychological theories of Carl Jung, about the persona, the ego, the shadows.... And yes I think it is also related to this, but especially touching on the fear of losing his passion for music, his inspiration, of not being able to write or make music again for whatever reason. Yeah , It has to do with the phrase that others have posted about the dancer Martha G., It's like a dancer dies twice and the first time is the most painful. I think that a way to face this shadow, these fears, anger, burn out, insecurities... And accept them, in order to grow and move on

The way I was trying to assess how you are going to approach this journey into BTS, and thinking "should I subscribe or not..." THEN looked into your videos and saw the AX7 sea of work, that was a first. I like AX7 but haven't met many ARMY that do as well (as it is not the most usual pairing 😂) so ...: I subscribed 😂😂😂. Yo gurl, never would have thought, I would have subscribed to someone liking BTS thanks to AX7, I'm in such shock 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Hope you both enjoy your trip down this Rabbit hole, and looking forward to enjoyed it along. Aich and I have always bonded on different elements in different genres that make this tapestry of human history! Just sticking with one genre or art is tandem to feeling one emotion for the rest of your life. Just wish we could do older gen pop from 30s and 40s and 50s but not much people pay attention to that anymore. It is just a great time!!!

@@MixItUpPodcast Let me tell you, I'm in my late 30s and I completely understand, but you know, somehow BTS actually gave this to me, the ability to be able to enjoy, discourse and discover music amongst different ages (generations), races and orientations. And yes it is a great time indeed🤟🏾, who knew I could feel this way again at age 30?? (so sorry for the late reply🙏🏾)

Yes, there are multiple meanings you can take from the song and the video. Darkness and light, fear of losing your passion for whatever you do (music in their cases), writer's block, depression - all sorts of things that might cast a shadow you don't recognize as a part of yourself - or you'd rather not admit to having that shadow. Hybe labels for the official MVs. BangtanTV if you want to watch some of their behind-the-scenes or side projects. I never thought about turning on the captions to read what you guys are saying and those captions causing issues with the official ones of the MVs. I've seen the MVs enough to know what they're saying without the lyrics onscreen by now, lol, so I don't think you need to have them in the inserted video as well. It looks like a lot of people are confused. I think most of us don't normally turn on the captions for music reactors - probably because captions are usually either for the hearing impaired or translations, but with music...I'm guessing most of us aren't hearing impaired to that extent or need translations for English. Nice that you include them though.

I like your deep dive reaction into what Black Swan is actually about, however it’s curious you picked up more of what “Map of the Soul 7” album content/topic is which is based on Carl Jung’s Pyschological aspects of oneself such as we all have a Persona (the “mask” image/face we show portray to the world), the Shadow (which is the dark side of our soul/oneself and will eat you alive if you let it consume you as it is repressed memories or feelings from trying to go with cultural norms or ideals) & The Ego which is the centre of the field of consciousness which contains our conscious awareness of existing and a continuing sense of personal identity. It is the organiser of our thoughts and intuitions, feelings, and sensations, and has access to memories which are not repressed.

I think your interpretation is valid, considering this song is in an album partially inspired in Jungian psychology and this song would be part of the "shadow", and there can be good and bad things repressed in the shadow, usually things we are ashamed of. In general, this song specific theme is fear. It's a song about the fear of losing your passion, or the fear of being unable to continue your passion, and how that would affect your emotions and identity. It's a song about frustration, and renewing your own inspiration.

Nice reaction. No you are not off. It's also based on the famous ballet Swan Lake. In Swan Lake there is a good/white swan and an evil/black swan. In many productions the role is played by the same dancer. Signifying the struggle within bewteen light and dark, just like you said. I love this song so much for its depth and artistry 😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

If you watch official videos (BIG HIT or HYBE) they have captions except for the very oldest songs. At that time they weren't aware how far reaching there music would extend over the world. NEVER use auto generated. I like your videos so far.

First of all, thank you for keep going with this journey with us. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and interpretation about their music while connecting it to everyday life. That's what beautiful about art, right? It is open to any possible interpretations. As many army have said, this is about thei fear about losing their passion, but it can also connect to your theory about dark side of personality. If you are interested, later you can watch their Map of the Soul mv which incorporates Jung's theory about psychology. This is the list for the mv for that specific album :) - RM intro: Persona - Suga interlude: Shadow - J-Hope outro: Ego ps. the english subtitle provided from HYBE is quite accurate, don't worry about it. But, if you want more detailed explanation about their lyrics, you can check out doolsetbangtan :)

Ah, I think I see what you are doing now. You guys are watching the MV's with the subs but because they aren't showing up on screen for us to see you put them into your own cc instead for the viewers. If I am correct in that assumption any army watching your reaction needs to turn on the cc box to see the lyrics too. I thought you were watching without the subs so not reading the lyrics to understand the song.
