The reason this version is called Kinetic Manifesto is because this is "only" the dance video. The actual mv is stuffed with symbolism and cultural and psychological imagery. It's one of them there needs-an-explanation-videos, you know... 😂

This song actually has a deep meaning. Talks about the embracement of their own shadows, they talk about how "they put themselves into that beautiful prision" that is being "idols" and being always in the public eye, so it's not always everything fine and beautiful all the time and there are gonna be times when they/we are going to be put down because it is life, but like Suga says on the song "Even if my knees drop to the ground as long as they don't get buried It won't matter" so they are actually saying "keep bringing the pain I can handle it and I will gonna get up a thousand times". And I dont think that the ARMY vibe in the video is just a coincidence, like.. we have each others backs. The first time I heard the song was like you watching the Kinetic Manifesto so I was blown away by their performance but then I really look deep into the lyrics and it is such a beatiful and positive song. There is also an MV for this song that is SO cinematic and beatiful and also the final scenes makes reference to The Lion King, so awesome.

"ON" according to the group is a reflection of the group's 2013 single, "N.O" an intense song that detailed the asphyxiating pressure of the korean society puts on young people to excel. While BTS are now in their 20s and no longer necessarily feeling the weight of academic pressure or that of the adults in charge on their shoulders, they describe a foe that, in many ways, is much more threatening : themselves. In these first lines of "ON" the group acknowledges being wrapped up in the glamour of waking up "in Seoul, or New York or Paris" and that with every leap they take to rise higher in recognition, the demons follow ("When I lift one foot, the shadow grows one step larger"). Fans might recall a poem Suga wrote in a 2018 episode of Run BTS, that reads: "It is true that the more light that burns upon us, the more shadows appear." The "shadow" is a direct reference to the Jungian psychoanalytic idea that the human mind is made up of major archetypes that make up one's personality: persona, shadow, ego, and self. Rapper Suga divulged his fears as he faces the perils of fame in "Interlude: Shadow," which begins the series of new songs on MOTS7. “I’m afraid, flying high is terrifying, he raps. "No one told me how lonely it is up here” RM continues with the same fears in the lyrics to "ON". "Look at my feet, look down / This shadow that resembles me / Is the thing swaying in fact this guy / Or is it the end of my toes / There’s no way it’s not scary / There’s no way everything’s okay". With the last line, RM echoes a sentiment he's expressed publicly before - that instead of ignoring or running away from the challenges they face, they must learn to live with them ("Together with that black wind, I fly"). ‘There’s no getting over the hardships, we have to be friends with the shadows’ . They’ve talked so much about the intrinsic bond between the shadow and the person and the symbiosis of learning to live harmoniously as one. But this single is far from an admission of defeat : identifying your fears makes you stronger, not weaker. With the pre-chorus and the chorus, BTS begin their battle cry, singing, "Can’t hold me down cuz you know I’m a fighter". There's an admission that while BTS reckon with the dark side of their "beautiful prison", they chose to walk this path. In their 2013 debut single, "No More Dream" Suga rapped that he wanted a "big house, big cars, and big rings". In "N.O" BTS asks, "A nice house, a nice car - could such things bring happiness?". Seven years later, their answer is complicated. But even when their happiness is threatened, they soldier on, singing, "If you don’t want to be driven insane, you’ve got to be insane / I throw all of myself into this two-sided world [...] You can’t hold me down cuz you know I’m a fighter". Why carry on when doing so "brings the pain". In fact, the pain almost proved to be too much. In their acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMA, BTS revealed that the group had talked about disbanding after they had "suffered a lot". But with MOTS7's second release, "Black Swan" the group made it clear that it is their passion for making art that keeps them going. They said as much with the opening quote of the music video by the late dancer Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful”. "(Eh-oh) Bring it on, bring the pain oh yeah / (Eh-oh) / Come on up, bring the pain oh yeah / Rain be pourin’ / Sky keep fallin’ / Everyday oh na na na / (Eh-oh) / Bring it on, bring the pain oh yeah". Map of the Soul: 7 is essentially an ode to the things that have made BTS who they are over the past seven years - which also are the reasons why, despite any hardship, they keep going “on & on & on & on”. In the Persona first-half of the album, BTS showed their appreciation for the little things that make them happy, and essentially wrote a love-letter to ARMY, their dearest support system. And in the second half, BTS give thanks to their strong friendships, years of hard work as trainees and rookies, enduring passion for the lifeblood that is music, and yes - even the haters, too. "Even if I fall, I rise again, scream / For we’ve always done so / Even if my knees reach the floor, / as long as I’m not buried, / it’ll just be another thing of the past". "ON" is BTS most passionate, striking rallying cry yet, and tells you much of what you need to know to understand BTS current ethos. "Even if I fall, I rise again. For we’ve always done so."

They have done several live versions of this in the last year. An iconic one in Grand Central Station for Jimmy Fallon. They also did a live one for 2020 MAMA....... on a sports field, the Seoul World Cup Stadium. ⚽ The dance practices of this song are a good watch because the dancers start hyping them up at the end which you can hear over the music.

The Blue Devils are actually in this video and the UCLA bands (Marching & Jazz) participated in the production of this song. There's a commentary on BangtanTV you might enjoy watching (even on your own time).

Yess! I’m glad you pointed out the american marching band feel, that’s exactly what they were going for. If you’re interested, there’s a 30 minute video called “on commentary dialogue” (or something like that?) that shows the recording process of the instrumentals and some interviews with people from behind the scenes. This was actually shot and recorded in LA, which is really cool! (In the video, there are one or two line spoilers for two songs called “friends” and “outro: ego”, but I don’t think it’s too bad, and you don’t have to worry about recording a reaction to them yet if it’s too much! (Outro: ego is actually part of a trilogy together with intro: persona (which you heard a part of in the mma performance) and interlude: shadow, all three of which are based on carl jung’s theory. Maybe you can do a reaction to all three in the future when you get to the Map of the Soul era?))

This was the fourth BTS video I saw when I first discovered them last spring! It excited the hell out of me...the beat, the dance moves, the voices, everything! For me, it cemented their otherwordly status! Whenever I hear someone refer to them as "just another boy band", I refer them to this song. I would like to see Backstreet Boys do THIS!

Fun fact the girl that is shown at the beginning of the group is actually the choreographer, Sienna Lalau. She actually has worked with jhope before on his collab with Becky G , Chicken noodle soup. ON is incredible. This whole Map Of The Soul 7 Album was honestly ART. This along with Black Swan, Shadow and Ego was a perfect cluster of story telling and amazing way to do what BTS does wonderfully which is combine themes of literature into their music and using it as a way to signify a message to help their audience.

THe concept to me - is talking to ARMY. The formations and the marching elements . The theme is like the USA marching bands inspire the fighting spirit. This to me is how BTS introduced themselves into the USA before their English speaking songs.

In my opinion, this is the best BTS choreo to date! You should react to BTS live performance of this song on Jimmy Fallon when they performed it at Grand Central Station (the first time a group has done that on the show)! You can see the choreo better, and you’ll quickly realize that the camera movements of this video aren’t the only reason why the dance seems to be so full of energy-that’s just how the dance is 😂

They haven't yet been able to perform this live. They have repeatedly said that they look forward to performing this song the most.

The reason I have become such a big fan of this group is because of their messages and thoughtful lyrics. So just a question to you Josh: What did you think of the song and the lyrics of ON? I love and am grateful that you do requests, but like Yoongi said "their albums and songs as a whole tell a story" that is harder to understand if you don’t listen to the “story” (album) from beginning to end. Seeing as they write about what they know and am passionate about, you can also see how they have grown up and changed through their music.

This is some of their hardest choreo!!! I absolutely love this video, it’s one of the first videos I ever watched of BTS, and I remember being blown away by the performance and how COOL they looked. Thanks! I hope you will take the time to watch some of the other versions, dance practices of this song. The cinematography in the official 'ON' mv is just like watching a movie! You'll have to do some searching, or maybe another ARMY remembers, but before COVID hit, there was at least one or two College/High School Marching bands that did BTS songs during their half times....set down their instruments and even did some of the choreo. I think as soon as the College bands return to football, we'll be seeing a LOT more BTS halftime shows! Borahae, ARMY grandma

lol when I first saw this video last year my first thought was “THEY HAVE TO DO A SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW”. There is absolutely no reason to not have them because they have so many amazing songs that would be perfect. I mean I was around for Prince, Madonna, and Beyoncé doing it and honestly would put BTS as another amazing act that would get the (already drunk) crowd riled up with just the energy they have.

As it is part of MAP of the SOUL arc ON also has a lot of Jungian references, like V's face tattoo that says 'The shadow like me'. It is all about archetypes, like ego struggling over self and soul etc. Even the dance moves reflect that internal struggle and fight when SUGA, JHope and V have their mini dance break it seems like V is shadow boxing JHope 'ego' and his 'shadow' Suga. The actual movie MV is even more filled to the brim with symbolism. I especially love the line 'gotta go insane to stay sane'.

This is MY BTS THAT I LOVE. I'm not a fan of Dynamite but I generally like the live versions.. I liked Butter a lot. I sing along when it comes on the radio. Definately not a fan of Permission to dance but I see why it's popular. It's just too American boy band pop for my taste, but I love the rap line singing, RM's hair is spectacular, great message, inclusive and I personally want to thank Jin's stylist for the extra button on his shirt being undone. It's just not my cup of tea. But this is right up my alley, THIS is one of my favourites. Love love love.

Oh my God Drum Line was an AWESOME movie. I loved when they used the powder on the drums & when they walked up to the competing drum line to play their drums in the sudden death competition. Anyone who loves this music video should watch Drum Line. 🙏💪💜

Did you notice that Tae also has a neck tattoo, going down to his collar bone? It's not as obvious here as it is in the official music video, but it's there. The official MV has all kinds of symbology in it, It has real animals in it, too. It's not a music video, it's a full on movie. This is one of the songs from their Map of the Soul: 7 album. It's the 2nd in a series that deals with psychology concepts from Carl Jung. There's a lot about shadows in the songs on this album, because of that. This song is towards the end of the album, when they've overcome their doubts and insecurities mentioned in earlier songs, like Interlude: Shadow and Black Swan. This was originally supposed to be two albums but they combined the last 2 of the trilogy into one and made it a set of 2 instead of 3. Map of the Soul: Persona is the first album.

They performed this live on Jimmy Fallon last year in Grand Central Station. Jimmy still talks about how heavy they were breathing when it was done and how amazing it was. They did a whole week on Jimmy Fallon last year as well and every performance is a masterpiece.
