I agree with Rooney. That midfield will struggle against Spain (Rodri, Pedri and Gavi) and France (Tchouameni, Griezmann, Camavinga).. Its way too attacking, 2 no10s and a box to box midfielder in Rice is offensive af. Every other team in the euros would get destroyed though.

Kimmich will play RB for Germany. Andrich/Kroos/Gündogan is Nagelsmann's intended midfield with Wirtz, Musiala, Sané/Havert up front. So there'll be even more midfielders in the front 3.

Definitely, need a bit more muscle in midfield! Foden and Saka get pushed off the ball too easily. An average French team did us in quarters of last World Cup and their physicality counted (it’s still part of the game). Most opponents of Zidane said it wasn’t just his skill, he was big, strong and tough.

The current England squad should win the Euros. Anything less is a failure. Based on finances, infrastructure, grass roots, sports science, population size etc England are by far the most underachieving national team in history. For all their advantages they haven’t won much over the years.

I agree with the logic of Rashford being there. Have 2 of the front 3 who run towards the ball to receive it, need someone who runs in behind to through balls. But Rashford’s form shouldn’t be ignored so I would go with Gordon or Bowen. The midfield needs balance, there’s no point people saying All these attacking midfielders like Maddison, Palmer and Foden. We need one defensive midfielder (like Rice or Mainoo) one box-to-box (like Bellingham or Palmer) and one playmaker (like Foden or Maddison). I’d love someone like Branthwaite or Tomori to play but a cb partnership is as much about the relationship between the two players as it is about pure footballing ability and Southgate has refused to blood new players in previous friendlies. So Maguire probably has to start. So my team would be: Pickford, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Shaw, Bellingham, Rice, Foden, Saka, Kane (c), Bowen.

Foden in that left wing position, push rice up and bring Trent in. Rice is great but will get caught as a lone CDM. Rotate Stones, Walker and Trent between RB, CB and CDM depending on the opposition. Stones and Trent more than capable in CDM, Stones and Walker solid CB’s, Trent and Walker solid RB’s. Also gives the option of switching between a back 3, 4 or 5 in game depending on what’s needed

Distribution from the back: it’s either Pickford hoofing it long or to Stones/Maguire who play it sideways to Shaw/Walker or Rice dropping deep who then plays it sideways to them or backwards. Then it’s slow down either wing, who get isolated in possession trying to come inside. Kane doesn’t get the ball so has to drop deep to get the ball to playmake. Get a free kick/set piece to try and score from. We know how it’ll end - QFs out on penalties because England can’t get the ball through midfield and create enough chances in the opposition penalty box. - crazy - we have this every 2 years. England have never even got to a final at a euros or WC held overseas. Thinking just because we have Foden and Jude gives us a great chance of winning? Look at how long Portugal with Ronaldo and Argentina with Messi in their teams took to win a major trophy at international level. They were both in their 30s.

Foden should play on the left to fit TAA in the midfield. Maguire shouldn't even be in the squad but its too late to gel another defensive partnership.

I would say Portugal have a slightly better and more balanced team/squad on paper than England. We are still weak in CBs (Stones isn't really a CB any more and always had a mistake in him when he was anyway) and the GK. Portugal have: Jota, Ramos, Laeo, Felix and Neto going forward, Silva, Fernandes, Goncalves, Neves and Carvalho in midfield, Dias, Dalot, Cancelo, Antonio Silva, Porro in defence and Sa is slightly more reliable than Pickford.

people are sleeping in Portugal who also have a kind draw. Stones tbf is Englands best CB and has been for about 5 years, jsut because he gets used differently in peps system doesn't mean hes a weak CB now.

My England Playing XI would be in a 343 formation, I think for England to win trophies they should focus on their strongest aspect, the midfield. They have lot of gud midfielders. GK - Pickford 3 CBs - Stones, Maguire, Walker 4 CMFs - Foden, Bellingham, Rice, Trent 2 Wingers - Sancho, Saka Striker - Kane Manager - Not Southgate

I would have put Foden on the left and Palmer in the middle. We can always change the game by putting Radford on the left for pace in the second half.

Rashford could make super sub if he's on form. I prefer Gordon, Palmer or Bowen on the left wing, to start. Foden as a no 10. Bellyache and Mainoo running the midfield, with Rice behind.

How on Earth can a defender as slow as Maguire cope with the likes of Mbappe ? England's only problem is in defence, and being over run in midfield. Unless that's sorted I can't see England making the semis.
