Sure, we’ve come across ore carts and trammers before while exploring at abandoned mines. However, finding an intact underground mine train parked with the ore carts still hooked up to the trammer (what miners call the electric locomotive) is something that I have never seen before or since. I’ll give away some of the secrets of the upcoming videos by saying that there is a second part to this train just a short distance farther down the track. I wonder if the operator of the trammer/locomotive felt a twinge of sadness when it was parked underground for the last time?
I mentioned in the description and comments of the last video that I would talk more about the history and geology of the abandoned mine in this description. The below is a translation from Italian to English and the translation is not perfect. However, it conveys the relevant information. So, quoting directly, here you go..
“The Buca della Vena Mine (formerly Stazzema Mine) was part of the 15th-16th century Vene Ferralis, although it is believed that works were held there already during the Medicean period.
Work restarted between 1850 and 1860, and in 1938 the Pignone of Florence company began excavating.
Since 1957, the SIMA company (subsidiary of EDEM) continued to work regularly in the tunnel searching mixed mineral barite-pyrite until 1990.
The field is described as a mineral body almost unique with barite, pyrite and iron oxides of good quality.
It is oriented NNE/SSW, in the contact zone between shale Unit Fornovolasco, white dolomite and grezzoni.
Considerable scientific interest was aroused by the discovery of rare or unique in the world mineralogical species.
Minerals mainly extracted are:
- barite used for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum industry and as nuclear power plants insulation
- pyrite for chemicals and iron and steel
- iron oxides for steel products”
Although the mine being explored in this video apparently dates back to the Medicean period, I passed ancient workings while pushing up the canyon walls that date back to the Romans and even the Etruscans. In other words, the iron ore deposits here have not exactly been a secret for thousands of years.
The section of the Buca della Vena Mine featured in this video hosted very dark rock and huge open chambers. So, even with multiple lights, it was a struggle to fully illuminate it. While there are certainly some even more impressive pillars and massive chambers to come, the rock is lighter and so that should not be much of an issue going forward.

All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference.

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

I talked to a old coal miner, who comes from a long line of miners, at the nursing home I volunteer at and he is very saddened by the lack of mining today. I think he said he started when he was 13 and dident stop until he was 56. He is long gone but I wished I would of learned more of his stories and which particular mines he worked in. A few of his "ghost" encounter stories were very interesting also.

That trammer is an unusual find in a mine because it's a diesel, an Orenstein & Koppel "Montania" to be specific... I was noticing prior to you coming across it that there were soot stains all across the ceiling of the mine, on this level, which I initially suspected might've been from carbide soot, until I noticed they were always slightly off to one side relative to the track. The fact that they were in such neat lines and always in the same alignment with the track made me wonder if they were using a diesel underground and sure enough... there she is, still with the crank handle ready to fire up and run, just like that mucker still connected to the air line. Must've been pretty well ventilated down there These Italian mines it seems weren't really ever "officially" shut down, it looks like they were just mothballed until they became too dilapidated to recover. 1988 was I think shortly after a huge commodities market crash so they probably worked a couple of years at a loss.

Oh man I got a chubby when the engine and multiple cars were found, I can’t image how that was in person! That place is huge! Another exemplary video man! Thank you! They are NEVER long enough! Seriously that place looks like what Disney Land fails at trying to recreate! Ok my one quick question that’s been on my mind watching these vids and since this place was so huge it seems like a good time to ask it... if you were a miner in there and let’s say yesterday you chowed down on so delicious beans and maybe a burrito then started your way down the mine this morning with your grande black with two sugars.. somewhere nearing 10-11:00 your going to need to... ummm... “drop your load of coal down the oar shoot” if ya know what I mean... where and how in that place would one go to accomplish that necessary function? You are too far into the mine to go all the way out just for that and that would waste a lot of time! Ya it’s an odd thing to think about but... lol Hey thanx again brudda for providing me and everyone else with such a great product! Your vids are always very much looked forward to!

DesTroy A. That's funny that you mention the Disney experience because I had the same impression with - like this was better than the Disneyland mine rides I went on as a kid... As far as dropping your load, miners I've talked to have said they just go and find an abandoned section of the mine and do their business there with a roll of paper towels if a toilet hasn't been set up inside of the mine. One of the great hazards, of course, is coming across someone else's "gift" they left behind. Thanks for the comment.

Oh wow.. What an amazing mine, the machinery and dimensions. Thank you very much for sharing the fruit of your passion with us all. I live in an area with some workings that are not all accessible, some leave craters/sinkholes in a nearby woods. There is another mine half an hour out from here that is accessible and public tours are held (iron mine; but apparently there is some gold in my area too). Please take care, I am concerned that many explorers are exposing themselves not only to visible but also invisible dangers like aspergillosis 😥 Feel free to contact me if or when you’re planning to come to Europe again, in Switzerland there are some interesting places next to the ones I mentioned (in the mountains there are rocks with a lovely view - but they emit a considerable dose of γ-radiation). All the best!

That locomotive is an O&K RL1n, produced in Sesto, Italy. It's not a "trammer" as it has an 11HP Diesel engine, this one has been modded for underground work. The apparatus on top of the gearbox in the operator's cabin is a smoke cooler and spark catcher. Filled with water it cools off the exhaust gases to reduce the smoke in the mine. Diesel locomotives are very common in european mines, with those kinds of mods or manufactured like that, they can be used as long as the mine is well ventilated and there's a low concentration of methane. This mine has such huge chambers and shafts, that it was a logical solution.

It's like Swiss cheese in there! Would be real easy to get list in this one. Way too cool seeing all the trammer, mucker, and carts still in there. Lots of carbon lantern graffiti, especially in the dryer places with a good echo, which were probably fairly safe places for the workers to hang out on breaks.

Yes, I think this mine is quite secure... I can't remember any places that I thought were sketchy and just a small amount of material had come down in a few places. That place was just downright nasty. Looks like a pure wasteland. What does that type of mine smell like? Chemicals? Fungus or bacteria form the algae in the water? That is the type of place you would expect some one eyed guy mutated from space to be living in looking for new food to eat. And I think I recall you saying you were alone in this place. When you get in something nasty like this, do you begin to think what in the world am I spending my time and money doing this for? The train tram was absolutely a fantastic find. Keep them coming. I think this mine is my favorite. Hero, why did you explore alone? (in the previous video, I think, you stepped and immersed chest high in mud). Could be wrong, these vids run together sometimes for me. I would buy merchandise if you start T-shirts. Do you have a Patreon or just budget your adventures out of pocket. I know the more you explore as a youtube influencer for marketing, the more tax concerns you accumulate. Just do what you do. Maybe you can schedule a live stream, maybe include one or two friends. Just blathering, just jealous you get to have so much fun. Thanks for the upload. :) Peace. "It looks so fun."

Thank you. Yes, this is a fantastic mine! It remains one of my absolute favorites... This one really was a lot of fun. Haha, and, yes, I did step very abruptly into chest deep mud in this one. That was a bit of a surprise, to be sure. I do have Patreon, but there are just two people contributing a few dollars a month. So, I greatly appreciate those two individuals, but paying for all of this comes out of my own pocket.

That hauler has a fuel engine instead of electric. When you walk around from the front to the side you can see past the engine to the coolant radiator. I only mention this because I thought all those haulers were battery operated electric motor carts??? Cool find no matter what.

Mark Cant Email totally agree! TVR should have 100X’s the views and likes + subs! I’ve watched quite a few different mine documenters and by far he’s the best. Videography, explanations and location excellence tops in all categories. Though in a fully selfish way I don’t want him getting huge because he would stop answering my annoying questions! Lol

I actually looked into that last year and the problem was with the lighting. The VR 360 works great outside on a sunny day, but I could not come up with a practical way to properly light everything in all directions. Another complication is that the lights can't interfere with the cameras.

Any thoughts on what coated this part of the mine that wild blue? I see in a few places where the stone has flaked away showing much lighter rock underneath.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 5 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that I don't know. However, it could be dust that accumulated on the rock over the years of mining there and/or it could be barite. Iron I am much more used to seeing (and will be seen elsewhere in the mine), but that isn't iron. So, I'm thinking that could have been the section of the mine with barite in it. However, hopefully, one of the geologists in the audience can weigh in on that.
