Yeol Eum Son rehearses at the van Cliburn competition 2009. She got the silver medal like at the Tjajkovski competition 2011.

To Oragvelidze: Basically, all major piano skills are formed from age 4-5 to 13-15. From what we know Ms. Son studied with Mr. Kim in Seoul in this period. Arie Vardi has very little to do with her current playing. She was formed long before she moved to Europe. She is an exciting talent to begin with.

It´s very interesting to listen a conductor talking to the pianist from the orchestra´s point of view, specially in a work based mostly on the piano part. Although the orchestra could seem to be not as difficult as in other works, both Chopin´s concertos demands a full understanding of the music flow, phrasing and rubato. Great job, both artists in a deep and mutual understanding of this beautiful piece of art.

He points out the importance of leading with the base notes, super important when accompanying orchestra or chamber music. This is simply helpful, not hurtful. My piano teacher plays with orchestra a lot, and when I was learning to accompany a violinist, she repeatedly had to tell me, "The violinist MUST hear this note!" It was always the downbeat or base note. I tended to play it softer just in case we were off! Opposite of what should happen!

When ACCOMPANYING a solo instrument, then you have to accentuate the bass, obviously. But if you're the solo instrument, it's not your job to make sure the violins here each and every note.

My pleasure. I know you'll love them. Not that there's a shortage of performances on KZfaq (about 20 or so) but each piano team bring their own unique gifts to their interpretation and I'm looking forward to hearing yours. Be TTTY soon ;-) PS no double posts.

I think his advice was needed, I would imagine for the importance of controlling the orchestra. Yeol Eum is brilliant.

Thank you so much for your reply. It's funny you should mention my friend! She's actually going to be coming down here the end of October. We plan to finish the Mother Goose Suite and learn 2 others. I am VERY excited for her arrival! She is going to stay for a week. When we finish, and post, I will let you know. And yes....i too wish she could come more often. Thanks for your kind words.

We are GRATEFUL for your suggestion! We both LOVE Rachmaninoff! We will soon be finished with Mother Goose, and will definitely need a new project! I will start looking for the score now! Tremendous thanks my friend! (I hope this isn't a double post! The computer did something weird while I was typing.)

Possibly in some spots. But I played this concerto years ago and so am intimately familiar with it. Take his discourse at 11:45. It has absolutely nothing to do with the orchestra. He's telling her "I want you to play the 16'ths w/o beats." Her playing was gorgeous in that passage--every bit the pro. His "order" to her is to interpret the running passage differently, something her piano coach should be telling her. Ego stuff, like most big conductors engage in.
@silvr946 жыл бұрын
Experienced musicians, especially conductors, are always going to think that experience automatically makes them better musicians. This young pianist is absolutely fantastic and I'm sure she is intelligent enough to know when to listen to and when to ignore a conductor's "advice".

You're very welcome. Might I suggest some pieces you might already be familiar with: the Rachmaninoff Opus 11, 6 Morceaux, which contains one of my all-time-favorites, the Barcarolle. But I'd like to listen to anything you and your friend play. Have fun. Keep me posted.

I've played the e minor Chopin concerto, but not this one. I cannot imagine advising her on how to play this work, even if I had learned it. First of all, I POUND too much and over-use the sostenuto pedal. I am dramatic. She is consistent and lyrical. I'd take her playing anytime over mine. Sanjosemike

C´mon! Did she take silver medal? Who would take the gold by the way?
@haydn4ever12 жыл бұрын
point taken...I have never played a concerto, and still consider myself very much an intermediate pianist. So perhaps I spoke out of line, but I did catch that, but though perhaps he told her that because the orchestra could follow her more easily. That's probably just my ignorance there, as you would know more about it! I appreciate your comment, and am taking both what I see in the video, and what another trained concerto pianist is saying! Comments appreciated. Thanks.
@JJTownley_Classical-Composer12 жыл бұрын
Someone with your musical training never "speaks out of line" --no such thing as ignorance either. We're all at different levels of learning. I learn some valuable things from people here myself. I listened to you and your friend. Very enjoyable. A shame you both can't get together more often. When you do you should try some 2-piano, 4-hand. Lots of good literature out there. Keep me informed if you put something new up the next time you and she videotape again.
@haydn4ever12 жыл бұрын
Forgive me, but I don't feel he was talking down to her. As you acknowledged, he knows and understand orchestra VERY WELL, and knows how the two will come together in the best way. I think he was trying to help her. I saw nothing demeaning, only constructive.

This guy is basically giving her a piano lesson here (i.e., he is talking about more than just making it easier for him to conduct). I feel like that is not his job. She surely has the world's best teachers teaching her and this is an insult to them. Long lines, thinking across bar lines, these are things that good teachers constantly tell their student. A finalist at Van Cliburn doesn't need to hear these from a conductor.

Doesn't seem to bother her...

I hope he's speaking for the benefit of us the viewers, otherwise his tone needs reconsideration. Sure, the stuff about marking the bass notes is maybe helpful, but pointing out that Chopin's music is very influenced by vocal style is embarrassing at this level. Listen to her Mozart from the 2011 Tchaikovsky. Is that the playing of someone who needs to be told to "listen for the orchestra at the end of a cadenza"!?
@jackhousman66379 жыл бұрын
VS Although the young lady is an enormously talented and accomplished, she doesn't bring a lot of ego baggage to this encounter, and is able to benefit from the long experience of a conductor who was leading orchestras in concertos long before she was born. There is no piano lesson here. Nor is there any insult to her teachers. He is acquainting her with the problems involved in concerto playing, and the interactive techniques and tools they both need to put a coherent interpretation together.

+Jack Housman - I agree with you concerning the situation here, but I think that probably in the end she played as she felt it, forgetting all recommendations from her concerned conductor, and I would imagine she did it so well that she carried both the conductor and orchestra into her play. Will have to find a recording of that performance to see if my guess is right!

This is at the Competition when Ms. Son was an unknown so she had to take a lot of sh*t from Conlon in rehearsal. I'm sure Conlon, a good conductor in his own right, could accompany this in his sleep but I feel it's not his place to tell Ms. Son how to interpret. His job is to just get a feel for how she's going to play the Chopin and then make sure the orchestra is with her. As a pro now, Ms. Son would tell a conductor where to get off if he tried to talk down to her as Conlon is doing here.

Lousy video coverage. Camera should have been on tripod, somewhat higher to see YeolEum's fingers -- improved view at 4:44, then lost it. Audio is poor: needed a 'shot gun' mic to reach out and clearly capture voices
