Buchanan Peak is the final tick off the list for Alan Kane's Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies, Waterton Chapter. Last year I wanted to do this peak when I scrambled Alderson & Carthew but there was too much snow to descend safely as it's rated difficult for the traverse. With a rainy day and easy ascent it was the best option to do this as a single peak from the town of Waterton. On the way up I encountered a young deer that was following me & soon after a black bear was coming down the trail. Normally I would never film a bear but after I yelled repeatedly, and he kept walking towards me I decided to document this behavior. I think the bear was looking for a safe place to get off the trail and go around me, but it was disturbing as to how comfortable he seemed with me yelling at the top of my lungs, in fact I yelled so long and loud it gave me a bad headache. Maybe this bear was used to humans which is never a good thing for the bear or people's safety. I had to turn & start walking down the trail a ways to take my backpack off, and get the safety off the bear spray. That's when I decided to film but thankfully the bear didn't seem to be aggressive, more concerned with eating & wasn't thrilled about having to leave the path... maybe he wanted me to let him pass? either way it turned out well as he didn't get sprayed, and I wasn't hurt. After the encounter I made it up to the summit no problem as the rain quit for the remainder of the day which made for a nice hike back down. Song is Intro by The xx.
