How to Replace the Evaporator Fan Motor in a Whirlpool Refrigerator

This repair applies to several makes and models, including Whirlpool, Maytag, and Sears Kenmore refrigerators. In my case, it's a Whirlpool Model GI6SDRXXB02.
Symptons included ice build up and inefficient cooling. The fridge was too cold, or not cold enough. The freezer was not cold enough, and the ice cream was mush! The ice maker worked erratically.
After diagnosing a faulty evaporator fan motor, I'll show you how to replace it. An easy DIY project. But surprise! The new fan didn't work either, though it tested just fine. I discovered another problem, and I'll show you how to fix that too...replacing a burnt out resistor in the line feeding voltage to the fan motor. Thank you Buck for this awesome video. I have brand new fridge similar yours and and it's got this noise rattle that is driving me and my wife crazy. I accessed the evaporator fan after watching your very helpfully video and found a spare self tapping screw on the fan housing! Factory workers must have dropped it in there. With your instructions, I got it all apart and put back in half hour, before the ice cream melted. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Perfect video. I followed exactly what you said and found a ton o frost/ice around motor. Used a blow dryer to remove ice and everything works perfect again. Thank you

Thank you so much for making this video! I've been dealing with this issue for quite some time. Been de-icing and running... I've tested the fan, the fan runs with 12v... I've had a repair man come out and he quoted me $600 for a board and fan. And when he included the board, and fan, I really had a hard time believing him, I knew the fan was "good"... I tested the power coming from the connector in freezer and was getting 1v. Thank you too your video, I pulled the panel off the back and found the same terrible looking resistor. Thank you for saving me $600.

Excellent video! I have the EXACT same issue with my bottom freezer Whirlpool... I had a HUGE iceball in the exact same spot as yours and the fan was not running to bring the cool air up to the damper and into the fridge. The damper works.... I did diagnostic tests through the temp control panel in the fridge and it pointed to the evaporator area. I should have been able to turn the fan on and off and it did not respond. I unplugged the fridg for a couple of hours to melt the initial ice ball with a hair dryer and after powering up the condensor powered on and the evap fan turned on. I thought it was fixed.... The fridge cooled... the next day I noticed the fan was not blowing the cold air from below into the fridge. Compressor works, evap fan does not run. I'll be ordering a new fan motor today. Looks like the harness came with a new temp sensor so if that was it, then I'll have that fix too.. also, great info on the motor's 24v supply from the circuit board with the burned out 10 Ohm resistor. So my guess is either the motor is failing or the temp sensor in the loop. Thanks from NY!

I bought a whirlpool side by side, and the fan seems to be goin out often. Now, the problem is the air blowing into the refrigerator is cold but it's not even remotely close to how it should be... I am looking at replacing the motor with a bigger one. Any recommendations on motors?

Before replacing the evaporator fan , I did an AC test on the power supply plug just to be sure the motherboard was allocating power to the fan. I did this to eliminate a possibility of motherboard failure. Just an idea to verify....

I believe I have the same fridge. My fridge isn’t cooling. The freezer gets ice cold and the evaporator fan is working but the fridge only gets to about 60 degrees. Any idea what could be the issue?

Maybe your damper isn't opening up in the fridge compartment? If the evap fan is running, then the little door (the damper) to the fridge compartment may be dead. Or you have an ice blockage in the air channel to the damper. Just a guess.

if freezer is cold but fridge is not would you still replace it in the same area? is it possible to have two evaporator motors?

You've got some obstruction keeping the cold air from getting to the fridge.

I have the same issue here. My fridge is warm but the freezer is super ice cold 🥶 lots of frost build up but not too much ice build up.

Would this prevent the refrigerator from cooling? Freezer feels cold but fridge is not

Yes, could be. I think that fan is an important component to cooling both freezer and fridge.

I replace my Evaporator fan Motor on a Whirlpool Gold side by side fridge. But when plugged my fridge back up the fan still will not come on. So I watch this video and learned some valuable points,so I ordered 1/4 watt10ohm resistors learning that the back panel control board had a wire that was burnt and charred. I realize that even when soldering the resistor to the wires my fan motor still did not come on. But as I contemplated on what could I be doing wrong I realized that the resistor that came from Amazon 10k ohm 1/4 watt 5% resistors and I was wondering could this possibly be a problem when I should have order 1/4 watt 10ohm 5% tolerance resistor does it matter. I’m illiterate when it come to the laws of of ohms. Can someone help me

Yes, there is a big difference between 10 ohms and 10K ohms. The "K" stands for thousand. In other words, 10 ohms versus 10,000 ohms. Get the 10 ohm resistor, and you'll be back in business in no time.

After all, I bought a 10-pack but only used one of them!
