When I was a kid my dad took me to the American Motors dealership to get a new car. There was a beautiful AMX in the showroom for about thirty-five hundred bucks. It might as well have been a million bucks we ended up leaving with a 68 Rambler American.

My Dad was an AMC fan. We had a 60s Rambler, but moved up to the beautiful brand new blue '72 Ambassador Station Wagon. Then ordered a '74 Ambassador 4 door absolutely loaded ... except for the 304-2 barrel. Wonderful times. As a kid at the dealership, I'd sit inside the 401 Javelins and the AMX models in the showroom as Mom and Dad did the paperwork. AMC sure did their own thing. We drove the blue Ambassador wagon across the country in the summer of '72 ... the classic California road trip from Indianapolis.

Easily one of the most underappreciated muscle cars. The AMX did pretty much everything well. In my personal opinion, it was also the best looking design AMC offered. The javelin was an eye grabber, in the same way as, say a train wreck would be, but the AMX was just clean and sporty.

I was a nine year old kid in 1969 and remember well the "Hip" and "Groovy" but cringe-worthy expressions like, "Swinger", and "Sock it to me!", Both of which are strangely and uncomfortably used in this video by announcer, Gordon "Bud" Lindemann, who was a pioneer in motor sports broadcasting. Then there were terms like, "Far Out!", *"Gimme the skinny!" (*a request for information) and the origins of "Ya' know", which ended nearly every sentence uttered by a young person back in that "Psychedelic" era found it's genesis in the "Mod" Generation. But, what an awesome automobile the AMX, Javelin was! Dick Teague was an excellent automotive engineer and stylist. He held automotive design positions at General Motors, Packard, and Chrysler before becoming Vice President of Design for American Motors Corporation (AMC) He was a member of the "There is no replacement for displacement" club, who's members believed that the larger the engine the better the performance; all mechanical marvels, not a computer in sight. He had a term for the styling of the 'Javelin', what he termed as, "The Wet T-shirt Look": "Voluptuous curves with nary a hint of fat." Compared to the 400-plus horse power which automotive engineers are now able to prod from a four cylinder, the 315-HP the engineers in the '60's teased out of this 390-ci (6.4 liter) V8 seem rather sickly, but it was pretty darn good for the time. I always wonder what the young people of today think of our now Classic Automobiles from the 60's... they must seem like dinosaurs to them!

0-45 in 4.1 and 0-60 in 6.3? That makes no sense. And a 14.5 quarter? That's just talking out of one's butthole. The weight and the power tells me that this car could reach 60 in 7.5-8.0 seconds, and it probably ran a 15.5 quarter at around 85 mph. My dad almost bought one of these in 1970 and this amazes me since he was such a GM fan. He wound up buying a Volkswagen Type 1, which was another cool car, especially since he ordered the Porsche Sportomatic semi-automatic transmission. I have no idea at all why he had a problem with manual transmissions in 1970, but then again he eventually bought a Bimini Beige '77 Coupe de Ville, which is basically a pink 4500 pound car with a flaccid 7.0 liter V8 engine....with all of 180 hp.
