I often focus on things that are more to do with everyday life and Hungarian culture and a little bit less with the instantly obvious tourist destinations.

In this video I walk around two Budapest Christmas markets and show you the best bits in 4K. The two Christmas markets are in central Budapest. The first one is by St. Stephen’s Basilica (Szent István Bazilika). The second one is in Vörösmarty Square ( Vörösmarty tér).
I try some traditional Hungarian food and I speak to some Hungarian market stall holders.

I was there too this year. I had a great time! I thought the light show with the Nutcracker theme and all the mice projected on the Basillica was brilliant.

Viki, thanks so much for sharing this video with us. I always miss Budapest and our many trips there. We have only been once during the Xmas season, back in 2012. Ironically to Vörösmarty Square.

I live in Chicago il. USA . My Great Grandparents were From Hungary. This is magical. We don't Have Christmas Markets nearly as nice as yours. Seeing this brings me back when I was a little kid.

Thank you!😁 You can use euros at some of the markets, but I’m not sure how favourable the exchange rate will be! I would exchange my euros into Hungarian forints first if I were you.🙂 Please also note that as of this year, you can only by bank card at the Vörösmarty Square Christmas market.🌲

Well, we do, of course,but not as much as I’d like!😅 What I meant is some things that are typically eaten at Christmas, such as stuffed cabbage are not eaten exclusively at Christmas. Do you have a favourite Hungarian Christmas dish?

@@thisishungary Okay, I see your point now. :) But, I think, it is the case in most countries anyway. Well, traditionally, here are only a few: halászlé (hungarian fish soup), töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage), rántott hal (breaded, fried fish), oven baked mákos guba (a dessert with poppy seed and meringue), zserbó (festive pastry with wallnut and aprikot jam), bejgli. And, although I'm fond of almost all of the "oldies" above, I make a family favourite cheese soup with bacon, duck confit, some quiche and mézes krémes (divine pastry with honey and cooked cream) as well, every year. For New Years Eve we usually make some kocsonya (spicy aspic from pork), pork roast, potato salad, virsli (hotdog), and lencsefőzelék (thick lentil stew). Thank you for sharing this video.

Yes, you're right, it's probably the same for most countries except for a couple of very specific Christmas dishes. 🙂 Cheese soup good😋, have a lovely Christmas!

I think probably the two biggest, or most well known initiatives are called ‘Cipősdoboz’ (Shoe box) and Mikulásgyár (Santa’s Factory). Shoe box is mainly for toys and games, books, sweets or a Christmas card for children, while Santa’s Factory is for donating non-perishable food, cleaning products and toiletries to families in need and the elderly.
