The frontal bone relic, known as Lalatadhatu, is one of the sacred relics associated with Gautama Buddha.
Seruwavila Mangala Maha Stupa stands as one of the holiest sites for Buddhists, housing the sacred Frontal Bone Relic (Lalatadhatu)(ලලාට ධාතු) and a few hair relics of Lord Buddha. It was commissioned by King Kawanthissa, the father of the renowned Great King Dutthagamini Abhaya, who later erected the magnificent Swarnamali Stupa in Anuradhapura, the sacred city.
According to Buddhist tradition, prior to his passing, the Buddha instructed that his frontal bone relic be enshrined in Sri Lanka. This sacred relic was brought to the island by the venerable monk Mahadeva.
During his third visit to Sri Lanka, the Buddha, accompanied by 500 monks, graced this revered site with his presence.
