The four major Buddhist and Hindu temples in Kathmandu valley. All four are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
1. Swayambhunath is an ancient (about 5th century) Buddhist temple complex on a hill in Kathmandu . Also known as Monkey Temple.
2. Boudhanath stupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet.
3. Pashupatinath is an ancient Hindu temple in the Kathmandu valley (5th century), considered the most sacred Shiva temple.
4. Changu Narayan is a Hindu temple, possibly the oldest temple of Nepal (4th century).

If Buddhists can believe that Lord Ram was Buddha's previous incarnation or that Vishnu is avatar of Avalokiteshvara, why can't Hindus believe that Buddha is Vishnu? Stop demonizing people for their beliefs. Also, Shankaracharyas have no right to speak on behalf of all Hindus.

I grew up saying that I'm Hindu however, we follow every ritual or festival of Buddhism. From being born to die, certain Buddhist rituals or things are necessary or even compulsory in our community. So this is the thing which I love mostly about Nepal.

awesome video...In my community we worship Buddha and Adinath(Shiva)...at first I was confused about that bcz no Hindu worships both Buddha and Shiva except us...As I ask my father he replies that we are non aryan and Adinath is non aryan god but it's quite different thing that we worship Buddha too....I've watched many documentaries about Buddhism but never find any clue about this mixed culture....But this video helps me a lot....Thank you ....

I agree, The difference between the Buddha and Sankarachaya however is that the Buddha was not what you would call a philosopher. He took things in a more practical direction. Shankaracharaya was a philosopher and as a philosopher he had to write philosophical treatises and commentaries, but he did compensate for this by saying that anything you say is the ultimate reality is not the alternate reality "not this, not this".

@@owltv6401 don't mislead people. Buddhists never opposed any social order, be it caste system, feudalism or theocracy. More over, Buddhist scriptures have their own myths regarding the origin of different varnas. The next Buddha will be Brahmin. All so called "superstitions" (like belief in rituals, gods, demons, bodhisattvas etc.) exist in Buddhism too.

The term Hinduism was created by the British as an administrative category and a catch-all for all Indic religious traditions that are as different from each other as so called "Hinduism" is from other religions. In India religion is a matter of identity and is extremely politicized, which is really sad.

@wrong notes Just some comments: 1. You're contradicting yourself. First you say that the word Hindu was given by Persians to indicate people who live around Indus Valley River, but then you say that there were no Hindus in the time of Shakyamuni. That makes sense only if by that you mean that people who were called Hindus by outsiders didn't refer to themselves as Hindus, which is true, neither Buddha, nor brahmins or anybody else identified as Hindu. 2. Indian subcontinent was much more diverse than only two kinds of people as you claim. The majority of population were neither brahmins nor shramans. Brahmanism also didn't evolve into Hinduism, as Hinduism is not a single monolithic religious tradition, but a British catch-all term invented in the 19th century for ALL Indic religious traditions which otherwise have nothing to do with each other and which didn't identify as one religion historically. For example, today both Shaivas and Vaishnavas fall under the umbrella term Hinduism, however historically they were considered as outsiders by orthodox brahmins. Even Buddhist scriptures mention them as traditions separated from brahminical traditions. 3. The majority of Indians are driven by ego when it comes to religion as religion in India is the basis of identity politics. Only few people practice any actual religious tradition.

Wow the row of Shiva's lingam at 9:27 looked great. I thought if that was a mirror!! Is there any significance to having those wide eyes at the top of temples? Is it typical in Nepalese temples? Never saw anything like that in Indian temples, so wanted to understand their importance?

Those eyes represent his enlightened state of mind. Eyes can show your state of mind. When you are angry, scared, curious, greedy, jealous,etc it shows in your eyes..so does enlightenment.

Those eyes are in Buddhist Stupas. Not related to Hindu temples. Like the guy above me said, those eyes represent enlightenment. Also the eyes of Lord Buddha. Hope this helps.

We do not separate Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal. All Nepalese are Buddhist and at the same time Hindu too. We are Bhindu in fact. I love Swyambhoo as much as I do Pashupatinath, if not more. I am a Bhindu (buddhist+hindu) from Nepal.

This temple was made by Nepali Buddhist and after the long time this temple was captured by Hindus this was never a Hindu temple.
