Although life aboard our beautiful sailboat is mostly sunsets and smiles, we still have to balance boat maintenance while sailing from anchorage to anchorage!
This episode we do enjoy some good sailing still, but are still dealing with the same water maker issues, leaving us very short of water on board... ok we are out actually! But no fear, we get a huge favor from our now good friends on SV Lusty, who gift us enough water to tide us over for a week or so while we all make our way further and further south towards La Paz Mexico.
Thanks for following the adventures of WE!

Here I was lamenting the fact that the circulation pump went out in our dishwasher (no kidding) so now we have to wash our dishes ***by hand*** and all we have is a virtually endless supply of fresh, hot water to do it with. Then I realized that I also had to deal with the 10 inches of fresh snow we got today and the fact that we're going down to 9ºF tonight and I'm wondering who's worse off. In all seriousness, having good neighbors makes all the difference. Good luck with the pump and getting the water maker up and running. Fresh water is kind of important.

@4:15, bearing(s) failure. In past auto /trailer projects, fouled up bearings have ended up being less of a problem to replace than I originally thought 1) Clean out the old bearing parts, races etc, 2) You may be able to just replace the complete bearing! 3) Clean up the male & female surfaces on the housings and shaft. 4) Check into the right bearing grease, then pack them, 5) Install the new bearing, 6) This should let the shaft spin and hold in inplace, once shims/spacers are set. There may be other problems, but this has saved me in the past. Good luck!

Occasionally when a pump bearing gets that snarked up, there's also electrolytic corrosion going on in addition to the galvanic type. When it's really bad (like that) probability is high that electrolytic is involved. But since common corrosion (oxidation) reactions are reversible, using AC power instead of DC greatly reduces electrolytic corrosion, as current spends an equal amount of time going in either direction. So the fact that some dummy went to DC pump power for your water-maker instead of staying with nice generator-based AC power and an induction motor resulted in complete annihilation of your self-sufficiency and possibly bank account. 😉 The bad news is that stray DC currents can rot all sorts of other steel parts as well whether 'stainless' or not. (If you haven't see it yet, check Hilma Sailing's episodes of losing their rudder in deep water, due to electrolytic corrosion of the 3-inch stainless rudder shaft by stray DC current from the helm instrument light.) Now, about that new AC induction motor for your water-maker pump you were interested in...

I have a question that has been on my mind for some time. Is drinking alcohol a norm with the boating crowd. All the sailing channals I watch except for a couple the people that are sailing seem to be constantly drinking alcohol and seem to drink a lot more then the average person who's living and working on shore. I don't know if this is being portrayed as the boating life for the benefit of making videos or this is really the life style. The only reason I ask is because I stopped drinking alcohol after many years of thinking the only way I could have a good time and fit in socially was to drink alcohol . I realized one day that I was thinking about having my nightly drink while I was driving home . It was obvious when I needed it to feel comfortable to fit in or have a good time it was time to quit . So I've not had a drink in over 10 years and I see the same trap I got myself into when I watch a lot of these sailing cruiseing the world videos.

Good question! Not an easy answer, but first off serious congrats on not drinking, that’s tough but we applaud you! Secondly, ya it kind of is the norm, probably not as much as it appears on channels, simply because it’s so easy to film and show the good times (not always intentional, we are not trying to portray one thing or another) and conversely it’s tough to grab a camera when shit is going wrong, and completely boring to film all the in between book reading and naps… no what I mean? I will say this- the cruising group is just 90% wonderful people looking to have fun, meet new people, and see beautiful areas, and if you have been able to master sobriety ashore for ten years, you will not have a problem enjoying yourself and others in the same way while aboard and cruising! We would certainly include you in all activities that you wanted to be part of, sober or not

Just found your channel…….why would you not carry a few cases of water for a backup just for a situation like this? I have a Grand Banks 42 and I always have around 15 gallons of emergency water for a situation like this. I was going to sub your channel until Erica made the remark about children….”not going to have one of those”…..children are a blessing and I for one will not support a channel that doesn’t feel that way.
@WEsail
@WEsail 2 жыл бұрын
Totally understand about the water (by the way, we DO have spare water, even more than 15 gal, but it’s for true emergencies, this was clearly not!! And how long will 15 gal last you and your wife/partner? For us it’s not long at all!!) but we don’t understand about the children thing?? Yes they ARE clearly blessings, but are you telling me that you don’t believe in over population? Or don’t support people who decide that, while children ARE blessings, they just aren’t right for THEM!? Are you telling me that you would follow us and support us if we just conformed to the typical laid out plans of others instead of being realistic to ourselves?? OR, what if Erica and I did always want children but couldn’t for some unfortunate reason, and it was so heartbreaking and personal that we couldn’t bring ourselves to announce it publicly???

@@WEsail if Erica had always wanted children she would not have said what she said. And I absolutely understand when people make the decision to not have children and I have many friends who cannot have children. It really bothered me that she said what she said and how she said it. The way she said it was dehumanizing. I hope some day y’all change your mind and have children, they are the best blessing in the world.
@WEsail

Hey Johnboy, children are blessings, FOR SOME!! And it’s crazy to me that some people out there are self centered self and righteous enough to push their views and wants on others, whether that’s childbirth or vegetarianism, or anything else… it’s ESPECIALLY irritating when really we should be thanked for using our heads and making the decision that’s correct for us, ESPECIALLY when it helps the rest or the world deal with the largest problem to ever be faced by humanity- OVER POPULATION, maybe you’ve heard of it?
@johnboyf-15vet51
@johnboyf-15vet51 2 жыл бұрын
@@WEsail This is not about over population, this is about the statement Erica said that was so dehumanizing to children, if she didn’t mean it that way she would have said so already in this thread but since you or Erica have made no attempt to clarify her statement , its obvious how you both really feel about children.
