DIY 3x8 to 1x8 Mountain Bike Conversion tutorial. I'll show you how to convert your mountain bike from a 3x8 to 1x8 chain ring on a budget. This chain ring had some damaged teeth, and wasn't the standard 4x104 BCD offset, so I decided to swap it out to make it a more clean and simple MTB riding and shifting experience. All of this I did in under 30 minutes and it cost about $60. So if you want to clean up your MTB bike and simplify the shifting check out this tutorial on how to convert your bike to a single chain ring on the front to a 1x8 drivetrain.
If you are looking for a budget friendly way to convert your MTB to a single chain ring on the front to a 1x8 then definitely check out this DIY MTB tutorial. This helps clean up your handlebars, allow more room for a dropper seat post, and if you are not doing a lot of up hill mountain biking makes for a clean, simple, and great addition to your mountain bike. Below are all the parts and tools I used to make this 1x8 MTB drivetrain conversion.

Converted from 3x7 13-43t with a chainring 28-38-48t front, to 1x8 11-34t with a chainring 36t front. Best thing I did to my bicycle.

Been swapping my bikes back to triples lately after doing this convertion a few years ago. The hills are steep around here and I ain't getting any younger. Also can go much faster on the flat with a triple.

Did the same with my commuter bike (used another kit tho). I don't need that many gears on that bike and the range is totally sufficient for inclines up to 8-10%. Also with 36 teeth on the front it's not too slow. Bike & cockpit looks much cleaner now. Love it.

Nice conversion. Did you have to use the chain guide? Did the rear derailleur work properly with the 32T chain ring in the front? I have a 3x8 and want to convert to 1x9. On a budget. Thinking of Alivio RD-M3100 and 9-speed cassette. But the RD-M3100 have a max capacity of 45T. Would it work with lets say 32T in the front?
@dirtwolfmtb
@dirtwolfmtb Жыл бұрын
No chain guide is needed if you use a narrow wide chain ring in front. I didn’t swap the rear cassette so no derailleur changes are necessary. If you decide to swap out the cassette you will have to have compatible shifter and derailleur.

Just shift into the smallest front ring first and see if you’ll like it. Most riding I’ve done on pretty heavy climbing hills a 1x9 or 1x10 or 1x11 works great. Just ensure if you do it you look at the cranks to see if they are riveted or not, if they are like this one, had to grab a used crank set.

Good video and nice work with the dismantling and rebuilding, sensible torquing of the bolts etc. I would have just replaced the 3x damaged chainring with another 3x in good condition. To me 1x is a downgrade from 3x. Big loss of valuable gear range. For what? To make the bike 300g or 400g lighter? Not worth it imho. But that's just me. Cheers dude 👍

There is nothing wrong with 3x or 2x or 1x but 1x8 seems poor gearing. If we had 5x it would be fine the derailleur only has to move one chainring at a time. Why people get hung up on 2x ot 1x especially I have no idea. I mean changing gear rear or front is not rocket science. Folk have been doing it for years. 😊❤

@@davidcawthorne7115 Had it done on my commuter (3x8 -> 1x8) and I don't regret it one bit. It's lighter, easier to clean, simplier to use and it looks much better like this. And truth to be told, you don't need a 3X8 set up for an hybrid bike, that's way too much gear just to go around in town. Installed a 44T front gear too and still can climb all the hills my city provides me with. Not to mention I can also keep a more than decent (and legal) cruising speed.
