I’m rebuilding my M54 right now and I’m not going as into depth as you are, but it’s insane how much there is to know about these engines and how people like you know it so well

The "e" on the intake tray and the "a" on exhaust side are actually German markings and stand for "Einlass" (intake) and "Auslass" (outlet). Greetings from Germany

For the retainers on the valves while you Compress the spring I was taught to use silicone grease to make both of them hold while you release the spring makes the job that much easier without them falling all the time 😂

I normally use magnetic spark plug socket and hammer to remove the retainer, put the socket over the spring and tap it with a hammer done .... A small flat head screw driver and bearing grease to reinstall the retainer , it will just stick on the grease , and release the spring compressor, way more safer than using engine oil to stick the retainer on to the valve Do the valve job before assemble the valves, those grinding compound splash when u lapping it , clean the whole head thoroughly and perform leak down test , and don't be lazy I've rebuild tons of engine and screwed up sometimes as well, thinking of shortcuts and being lazy Luckily this is just a cheap hobby build
