Hi Everyone, So sorry this has taken so long, but there was a bit of difficulty in obtaining the correct parts. But, finally... all the fuel lines in the car have been replaced! Yea! Quite the job.
The gentleman who makes the fuel line kits is Len Cummings: len.cummings[at]verizon.net (replace the "[at]" with "@"). If you need a set, send him an email and let him know you saw it here!

+1 on Len Cummings. Len went above and beyond getting my '81 SC back on the road. I had the fuel line between the tunnel hard line and the Fuel Accumulator split when I was in my garage (at least I wasn't 100 miles from home when it happened!). He patiently instructed me on how to repair my car, helpfully suggesting how to safely repair the hoses.

A suggestion for your future viewers. If you soak the 4 rubber grommets with exterior rubber conditioner (armoral etc. ) it helps to soften them up. I was able to push them through with a plastic pokey tool. No hammering required. Might be age dependent. Mine is an 87 Targa.

Thanks! The bit getting the hoses through that loop over the steering rack only took like an hour to figure out ;) I figured they MUST have a system to get them in... I can't imagine what modern cars are like ;)

I just did the whole fuel lines and hoses in my '87 Carrera while engine in place, it was one of the hardest jobs I have ever did on any automobile!, definitely having the engine removed simplifies the job so greatly. I wish you had that video uploaded 3 months ago!. Thanks so much for the great Porsche content in your channel.

@@HeidiandFranny No, I used the OEM lines from Porsche, if I knew about this kit I would definitely use it, it would make the job much easier. I guess that what I will do after 30 years when the next fuel lines change will be due! :)

Heidi and Franny's Garage Yes, some areas in northern Florida have open beaches with some restrictions related to social distancing (not sure how enforceable?). Southern Florida is still more restricted, though. Hurricane season is predicted to be active this year!!

Great work! It's amazing to see how much went into the original design and how aftermarket suppliers have come up with great ways to make replacement a snap. When a job goes for a long period of time, it's so hard to keep an upload schedule. But, this one was definitely worth waiting for. I'm looking forward to seeing that engine get back together. :)

Wow, wow, wow!!! This video you and Heidi have posted has been such a help for me. I have continually gone back and forth reviewing your steps, so we’ll documented. I’m not quite through to the finish line but getting there. I’ve had both hard lines installed but uncertain of the routing. There seems to be too much interference up front. I finally broke down and removed the driver floor board to see if it would help. Yikes! What a pain! Hope you guys are well! Thanks again!!

Franny, I'm happy to hear there are folks who specialize in fabricating replacement parts that are no longer available. Don't apologize for taking your time. Routing lines is no easy task, because as you said, they were originally routed before all the parts in the way were assembled! Precision work takes patience, which takes time. When I restored my 67 Beetle the factory warehouse in Germany still had plenty of parts, including body parts and panels, but they were running low. They put us in contact with a factory in Mexico that warehoused replacement parts for most Beetles imported for the American market. We finished the restoration before the German parts ran out. There were plenty of aftermarket Beetle parts, but it didn't cost any more to stick with the OEM parts. We had to wait for shipping, which was very slow. I think everything came by ship back then (mid 80s). I wasn't willing to pay for expedited air shipping, which was very expensive. It took about 2 years to do the complete restoration, the last part being new paint. I couldn't afford to do the entire restoration quickly. I had to save up and do the next steps each time. We did the engine first and I drove the car through most of the restoration. It was out of commission while it was at the paint shop. Since Beetles are all bolted together it was easy to replace fenders and bumpers. The interior took a lot of work and took the most time.

Just wow and very well done. Perfect filming and editing which is half the battle and these pipes were a monumental task but broken down into step by step all jobs become slightly easier. Surprisingly clean (rust wise). They do have a good bit of rust protection. I drove the car through a couple winters here (it is still sitting on snow tires) and It actually was one of the last cars out of a town to the north of here that was flooding! Heidi said the water was almost up to the doors and they closed the road within a few more cars. They are super solid cars!

Good idea to use the scope...not a fun job lying on your back. I don't know how you keep a cheerful face! I HAD to change them on my 87 when while wire brushing the rack area with a hand drill a strand of wire flew off and skewered the plastic line. Superbummer.

I wonder why Porsche put the metal lines in that location in the first place. Is there any kind of stress to the lines like heat or mechanical stress? Anyway, once again an interesting tutorial, thanks! Oh, btw: 17:11 : „Putting them in is just the reverse of taking them out“. This is a frequently used phrase in the workshop manual, when the people in Zuffenhausen know very well that the way back will be hell. You could read it as: „Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." 😋

I'm guessing the steel there is for road rash? It isn't hot... Ya know, the fuel lines on the 356 are mostly steel too. Yeah, that reverse thing always sounds so clear but... Those steel lines must have a trick to getting them in. They can't go in from above either. You know there was this one tech on the line that could put both in in like 3min. Well, on from here! Lots to go ;)

That is a great question! As far as I know the insulation replacement is an engine-out task. Maybe if you lower the engine somewhat? BUT, there is a guy on the forums that makes a cover that goes over your falling insulation and holds it up tight against the firewall. It looks great too. I think I saw it on Pelican. Our 993 is needing some love here too...

OK I Got the chassis lines from Len and will be tackling this as soon as I get off my butt. So another 3-5 watchings of this video for good luck and I'll be off to the races. I have new leathers for the seats so I guess I'll be killing 2 birds with one stone too.

I got mine in today. Not too bad at all. I cut the lines off by the rack so I didn't have the snake the old fitting through. You guys have made my work on my Carrera so much better with these videos. I did yank too hard on the second line and it went into the hole, but I had the hatch open in the back seat and was able to get it poking out from there averting a headache.

It is a standard engine stand for Porsche/VW, but make sure it can handle 6-700 pounds. Also, the one I have isn't as stable as I'd like... I'd recommend one with a cross bar at the front and four wheels.

Isn’t there one maybe two more lines you need to complete the job? Filter to engine, and engine to return line? Those lines get the most extreme heat cycling of them all. Are they just not available?

There are three line in addition to these and they are on the intake manifold video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9Oifpmgl9mppZs.html). They were also a pain to source ;) In addition there is the neck on the tank and some vent lines I might look at as well.

If you are looking for the engine fuel lines Coline makes and sells a complete set which you can get at AutohausAZ. We wanted them in yellow cad so we had them made but the shop was such a terrible experience I won't recommend them.

Franny, with all the ethanol they put in today's gasoline, what's the possibility of ruining these steel tubes? Maybe they're not stainless steel made, and will corrode under this new "fuel". Here in Brazil, we running 27% ethanol on gasoline, and even more.

Ethanol does have an affinity for water, but if you run through the gas fast enough it shouldn't be an issue. The steel lines (except for the crunched bit) are in great shape.

It seems to me the water cooled cars are much easier to work on.

I'm hopeless with mechanics so try not to laugh... Why the small parts on both sides of the tunnel in the fuel lines in stead of one complete flexible line ?

Oh, that's because the plastic tunnel lines almost never go bad (unless some drills through them). It is the soft rubber lines that degrade over time so having connectors on both sides allows you to replace just the rubber parts. On the OEM lines the rubber is swaged on to the plastic lines so the entire assembly has to be replaced. Does that make sense? F

@@HeidiandFranny Perfekt, thx ! I was surprised by half of it being hard lines and half being flexible lines and started thinking about this whole configuration.

LOL....No! Seriously, this is the car to buy, if they would sell it. Do not need 930 turbo.....over-rated by modern standards and most only 4spd, the wide body is nice....but not the cost differential. True air-cooled 911 that will be perfect, looks very nice, and will last a long time! Mr .P
