I think one of the best gifts I gave my daughter when she got married was to take the pressure off to come visit exactly on the major holidays. There was a lot of pressure from both sides of the family to see them on the big days when we were newlyweds and a young family - and it was just too much. Way too much stress and very unnecessary. It also took away from our time as a young family to create our own fun traditions (which is what I remember when I was a little kid). I told my daughter - "I'm grateful to be a part of your life. If it works best for you to celebrate with us in January - or March - or whenever...that's fine. I'll be glad to see you whenever I see you." Also, this year my daughter had a great idea to steer the focus away from the 'stuff'. She said..."Let's think of Christmas as Thanksgiving with church!" Brilliant. I'm still putting up a tree and buying eggnog - but the holiday is going to be about the family - not about the stuff.

Eliminating the pressure to meet on specific days gave us so much more possibilities to see our family in a relaxed and meaningfull manner. We don't have children ourselves, so fitting in with schedules of our family members came somewhat naturally. We love it when we can celebrate together, but also love it when we celebrate with just the two of us, seeing our family some other time.

I wish I had heard this 20 years ago. All my young adult kids are in their early 20's and we are still struggling and juggling family during the holidays. We all loved Christmas 2020 because we stayed home because of Covid.

I have taken nieces and nephews candy and got cookie decorating kits so we can decorate cookies together. An activity vs a gift. Now that my girls are older and two of them have birthdays just after Christmas we have switched gears by blessing local toy drives. They get more joy out of it. I also will be implementing this with my son as he gets older.

All excellent and common sense answers. It is all about communication and boundaries. Our family spends a total of $50 (Aud) per person in the form of a KK, and it’s only if you want to join in, there’s no pressure. What I’ll love as the gift of someone helping me with things like, clearing the gutters on the roof, helping me garden, helping me reorganise things in my home etc. The cost is the time it takes and I enjoy the company. I cleaned the kitchen and pantry for a friend once as a birthday gift. She often told me this was the best gift she ever received. ❤❤❤

We had already bought Christmas for our young sons, when a friend invited us to join them to go out of town to a toy auction. We went nuts and bought way too many toys. On Christmas morning our house looked like a wrapping paper explosion. That afternoon both boys decorated a big box with markers, drawing an anchor and porthole. They were sitting inside with paddles acting like they were rowing a boat. My husband said next year we are buying all size boxes and markers only.😂😂

As I'm approaching 73, I've been scaling down my Jewelry collection and giving to close friends. Otherwise baked goods. I don't celebrate Christmas, so for Chanukah, I make a special dinner for my son & I and give him $100 for him to spend as he wants.

My (adult) kids love conventions and events. Whatever is happening that they're interested in, they're usually being gifted a pass from me if it's near a birthday or Christmas. My youngest son's gift has been the same the last four years... a season pass to an event that happens in our town during February and March. They're nice enough to offer Black Friday specials for the passes right before Christmas and it's a winner.

We have friends that do the 1 in 1 out rule, HOWEVER- if you want to get them consumable gifts (water balloons, cookies, jams, bubbles, etc) then they don’t follow that rule. However if you get them a keeper toy, just know that they may choose to get rid of the new toy you bought them in favor of their favorite toys.

For those needing an affordable turkey, Grocery Outlet is selling turkey for $7 if you spend $50. Also, check your local food banks. Some don't require that you meet certain income limits or that you even live in the same city/county/state and they offer turkeys.

Personally, picking gifts for people gives me anxiety and always has. What I do are practical gifts that I can make and I do it in bulk. Example, I made grocery bags. Used a bunch of different patterned outdoor canvas material and made 20 bags. Then I got face mask sheets, lip chap, and made three kinds of cookies, and did like pocket notepads and notepads with magnets for the fridge. I took 12 of bags for the ladies at work, set them on the lunch table with the extra stuff and let the ladies pick their bag and fill it with the little things. The other bags went to family members. Everyone got the same thing in theory but the patterns were different and they got to pick what they wanted and choose what cookies they wanted. I've been doing this for 8 years now and every year they're all excited to see what I made and what useful items they get. Not saying it will work for everyone but it's made this time of year a lot less stressful for me. As far as Santa, I have one daughter and she is almost three, I don't really do gifts cause she doesn't understand yet but I plan on doing like one practical gift, and one thing she has been asking for. I find reading stories about Santa and taking a photo fun but telling her that Santa brought her xyz not something I'm going to do.

When I was growing up, our large family did a gift drawing so that every one got one gift. (Think sort of like a Secret Santa). All adults names went into one drawing, and all the kids names went into another drawing. So as a family of Mom, Dad, and two kids - they would draw two adult names, and two kid names to purchase 4 Christmas gifts. Additionally, come Christmas, they would receive two adult gifts and two kid gifts.

For the past few years our group gift to our kids have cost very little, but still been nice gifts. (Our kids get 5 or so smaller Santa gifts each, and one large group gift from mom and dad) Last year, my husband asked his office what they do with the computers when they have to upgrade. Turns out, every two years or so because of the software they use, the company he works for recycles their “old” computers. We asked if we could have one of the old ones for our kids. They said yes! So that year the kids got a refurbished two-year-old MacBook to share for free. Last month we went to a local theme park with my sister for a day. They had an end of the season sale where for just a few dollars (I think it was $10 each) you could upgrade your one-day ticket to a season pass good until the end of the 2024 season. So we did that, but haven’t told the kids. On Christmas morning they will learn we have season passes for that theme park.

Grand canyon questions: did you do the shuttle to the north? How long did it take you start to finish with stops? Hardest part? Easiest part? Most amazing part? Was it as hard as you were expecting? Other things you did on the trip before/after the hike? What did you eat when you got to the top? Would you do it again? Whats the next adventure? Lol. I did the hike over Labor day and it rained ... which was amazing because it took the temps down. It was just a beautiful hike, and I loved doing it with my hubby. Would definitely do it again, hopefully without the e coli break out. Lol.

My kids have huge feet (they come by it honestly - I wear women's 10 and dad wears men's 15). My son has been in men's shoe sizes since 2nd grade 😂. I remember looking for shoes for him when he was wearing out the toes every month at age 8/9 and reading reviews that were like "these were great after my hip replacement surgery" lol. But how do they hold up on the school playground? He's 12, wearing a 12.5 now.

I looooove giving gifts. I hate getting gifts. I always just buy myself underwear and tops (things I need anyways), wrap them and put them from my kids and hubby so they have something to give me BUT if they went shopping to get me something I’d be in such a foul cranky upset mood. Make me something, DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON ME. I can’t stand it. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Teens get $20 for Xmas, little ones get presents. Usually I would do a set. So my 9 year old had become a bit of a book worm (not a bad thing), the books he likes atm I have to buy individually so it can make-up the set. So I can see if it’s a set type thing then yes BUT if I’m asked to limit the amount of gifts, sure I’ll limit the gifts. Weeeeell I’ll try to limit the gifts. Most of them are tweens or 18/19 years old. So money it is. 🤷‍♀️ I don’t plan on being around next year for Xmas. I plan on taking my family away. Our families aren’t getting along with people, this is the only year we will be home for Xmas because it’s bubs 1st Xmas. If we have baby #5, we will see my grandparents for then but then we will be gone again. No one will know where we are or where we are staying. I want to be left alone with my little family now. This is the last year anyone (but my grandparents) will see us for Xmas.

For the smaller kiddos, look into local activities. Does your city have a mini golf place? Bowling? Many bowling alley have lighter balls, bumpers, and some have cool animal themed slide looking things where they set the ball on top and it rolls down and into the lane to knock the pins over. Arcades are a good one, and those are often double the gift because they can win tickets to choose little prizes. Check to see if you have a trampoline park or a gym for gymnastics. Our gym for gymnastics offers certificates or parties since they have those big foam pits, large foam slides, etc. That's always a big hit for smaller children.

I'm sure you're not alone. Instead of being annoyed that others choose to celebrate Christmas differently than you, perhaps you could think more about what Jesus' words, love your neighbor as yourself. I find when I choosing to get annoyed because others aren't meeting my expectations, I need to back up and pay more attention to my own not-so-nice attitude.
