Love this class. It's where 90 percent of collectors live at least for a good portion of time in the collecting lifespan. Plus it's really the most interesting class to talk about as this is where the manufacturers take chances. So many knives in so many styles in this class.

I instantly picked the Knockout when the video came on. But 2nd I would say it's a battle between Kizer, and Bestech. Similar materials and actions, but it would come down to personal preference on blade steel.

To me action and fit and finish is what should qualify for budget high-end. We know we’re not getting the super steels under $100, but if it is made well, I’d call it budget high-end.

The 9CR18MOV steel has been working great for me. I use the Civivi Praxis and it’s edge holds up almost as well as my D2 blades but it is far more rust resistant. Kind of reminds me of my VG10 blades but it seems to be a little bit better. Not sure just how good it is but I like it better than 14C28N.

I don't care what Frankie says..D2 is a great budget steel, lol.I have never had a rust problem, but if I did, I'd just coat it with butcher block conditioner like I do with my 1095 woods knives. Stuff works great. I do love my Bareknuckle. Good picks.

I'd have to say either 14c28 or properly heat treated 440c. They're easy to sharpen, maintain, and they take an amazing edge. But that's just me. I will say though another things is action. For instance I have a knife I got from big 5 for $40. The blade steal is 8cr13 but it has a very smooth axis lock, its on bearings, the handle scales are g10 and the liners are skeletonised. To me I try and find a good mix between materials and action.

Yeah, I watched the whole thing. I would probably go with the Begleiter. I work on a farm, and my Steel Will Cutjack gets a bit gunked up with all the hay dust, so bearings would probably be a bit less resistant to that. The 607 and the Praxxis look pretty darn good tho.....just nervous about those bearings.

14c28n would be my budget steel choice. As long as the blade is well heattreated that steel can hold a very low angle edge and cut for ages. Sandvik steels in general are well suited for super low angle edges, I am talking 12-10 degrees per side kinda edges. They were made for that, but these chinese knife makers often put the steel on super bulky blades which is counter-productive :/ VG10, N690, 440c and D2 are all good budget choices, but really the heattreat and the blade geometry is a more important factor anyways, and a lot of these low end knives have terrible heattreatment in my (granted, limited) experience.

I think you guys are right in line with a higher end budget category. I have stayed away from 14c28n since my knockout. It's a nightmare to sharpen and I am little hesitant that's just the way that steel is. It's is very possible it is just me though......

I told my self I'm going to move towards customs or limited in 2019. I would only buy a PM2 in LC200N and a Bareknuckle in M390. I baught a few China D2's and 3 Byrd knives in 8cr13 and one in BD1. I did modify the Byrd's and baught lynch clips for them. The best steel is the one in your pocket. Enjoy the variety. I still carry a Ganzo depending on the day.

D2 was the steel used by a number of custom knife makers of the 80s-90s for fixed blade knives. For me, I prefer S35vn which wasn't on your chart for folding knives. I wear my knives inside my waist band, so D2 is definitely not the the steel for that type of carry. My favorite knife design would be the WE 617, but with S35VN blade. I love big folders. I think these knives all definitely have to be < $100, but beyond that I think it requires at least 2 of 3 categories: blade steel > 8cr, fidgetable action, g10/metal handles. This applies to every item on your table you set out for this. Only problem with these three criteria is that the FRN Chaparral is a stellar piece, and I'd argue it def fits in this category, but it doesn't fit two or more of them. It just has a certain value to it that's hard to reduce to a set of criteria

Sorry 8cr13Mov is the best if you buy a Kershaw, There is something in the heating process or something else. I don´t know. Edge retention is a little bit lower than most S35 and so, so easy to sharpen. just a ceramic rod and it is razor sharp again. I have a WE Wisp Frame and a Kershaw Injection. I'm not sure why our lovely KZfaq couple had such a hard time flipping that knife, but I can definitely say that the Metamorph is a wonderful front flipper. Lots of fun and smooth as heck. When I got my hands on my first front flipper, it was (in a way) like my first time learning to Spydie flick - only much harder. I felt almost powerless. Like a newb of newbs. Kinda like someone who doesn't know how to work a liner lock-only worse, because I couldn't OPEN the darn thing. But now I find it fun and effortless. And after owning 6) I have an appreciation for front flippers (for a number of reasons, but this isn't the place to get into the reasons-I'll see you on reddit). Anyway, what I meant to say is that the Metamorph is an awesome front flipper. (And perhaps my favorite KZfaq couple just need a bit of practice.)

I have a boos blade smoke tm and can't get the front flipper thing down. Love the knife but it's palsy time when I try to flip it. No more front flippers for me.
