The weather is finally perfect for outdoor training, and these are my outdoor training tools. This equipment is mostly homemade or repurposed, and was relatively inexpensive. I did purchase the stainless steel hitter (but a steel hitter can be made for roughly $20), and wrist-roller (which can be made for free using stuff around the house).
Hojo-Undo tools can be divided into two groups:
1) impact tools for body conditioning.
2) weight resistance tools for functional strength training
This video shows several types of tools from each group and includes some ideas on how to save some money by using homemade and/or repurposed training tools.

Missed the point entirely. The video is about hojo undo on a budget. One can have sashi, nigiri-game, chi-ishi, makiage-kigu, tachi-makiwara, various hitters, etc, for the price of a single Shureido set of nigiri-game. Beside home-made and re-purposed equipment is far more in keeping with Okinawan tradition. Shureido makes great stuff and if you have a few thousand dollars burning a hole in you pocket they're the obvious choice. Too many karateka avoid the training because it is to expensive.

Bamboo hitter (and steel one specially) you showed is used in original ancient techniques and when done precisely as it should and for prolonged time it does influence bone marrow and stimulate blood cells creation ... Btw, I respect your channel and amazed by several of your vids ... Keep the Path friend.

I should add that I consider the stainless steel hitter and a mung bean hitter to be close to interchangeable, with the caveat that slightly more caution needs to be exercised with the bean hitter

Absolutely, I practice senzui (marrow washing). I believe that the use of hitters in "marrow washing" closely parallels modern "bone marrow stimulating techniques" which use microdamage to the bones to cause the release of pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow. These stem cells can then heal and repair tissues. This modern research goes a long way towards confirming the rejuvenation and strengthening of the body which traditional sources claim marrow-washing causes.

Hey thanks...found it right away. After I watched this video I was searching for "barrel jars"...wouldn't bring up anything...soon as I put in 2.5 gal barrel jars, these came right up. I'll be ordering a couple right away. Thanks again for the great video.

thanks thats it! I'll see which I have. I'm a hojo-undo/hard qigong fan. and have trained in a few internal/external qigong. It is pretty cool how we can clearly see the link between arts. thank you for sharring your tools with us.

I hope you are not asking for a medical explanation. Best way to understand rubbing is to try it. Get a broomstick and roll it up and down the shin. Odds are pretty good that it will hurt. If it doesn't use a little more pressure. After a few months it stops hurting. It doesn't affect the general sensitivity to touch but it definitely makes blows to the shin less painful. When combined with hitting; rolling/rubbing can be useful for conditioning bony areas.

This gentlemen is doing us a great service. Yes, can you buy more expensive equipment if you have the money. Sure. There are tons of places on the internet where you can get the authentic equipment from. But if you want to go the budget route, this is the way. I will admit though, looking up "emergency essentials" does not help or 2.5 gallon barrel jars, because one brings you to tons of sites that sell nothing but 55 gallon survival barrels, the other brings you to nothing but glass jar sites. So I am having some difficulty as well trying to find the exact ones that you have (Nigiri Jars). I really like the ones that you have. Very nice. If you do find the site that you got them from, please post them. You have done a great job with this video. Thank you so much!

Yes, that is where I bought my jars. They were light-weight clear plastic jars when the arrived. I just painted them and added various materials to increase their weight. They may be too large for most people. The key factor being that one can perform the bent-thumb grip while using them (this is important for a number of reasons). I can use that grip with these jars, but then again I am almost 6'3"... so I doubt they will work for everybody.

Flexible hitters are used because the goal is to cause micro-trauma not macro-damage. Inflexible hitters cause the wrong kind of "trauma" (ie they are more likely to cause "bone bruises" than micro-damage) Inflexible hitter are OK for fleshy areas because the flesh conforms to the hitter and thus larger areas are conditioned. Flexible hitters conform to the hard bones and thus condition large areas. Hard-on-hard tends to condition only a tiny surface and it is harder to do a thorough job.

Yes, the complete title is "72 consummate arts secrets of the shaolin temple" An excellent book on the same topic is: "Jin Jing Zhong. Authentic Shaolin Heritage: Training Methods of 72 Arts of Shaolin". The Iron Shirt section of "Qigong Empowerment - A Guide to Medical, Taoist, Buddhist, WuShu Energy Cultivation" is also interesting. What fascinates me is that these books reveal that the Hojo-Undo of Okinawa has its origin in the "Hard Qi-Gong" of Chinese arts. Hojo-Undo = Hard Qi-Gong

Adjustable hose clamp on the end. Heavy duty adhesive on the stick before pounding it into the hole with a sledge hammer. Plus a nail on the side opposite of the clamp. However, it did not survive more than a couple months. I will have to revisit design testing next summer (too cold outdoors now and that is definitely not an indoor tool!!).

Yes. Not sure about preexisting joint pain but the vibrations are fairly soothing so it might well help. Collagen based connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons respond to increased (sub-damaging) mechanical loads by increasing the strength of the existing tissue as well as thickening those tissues. The haline cartilage and bones of the joints can be strengthen via microfracture techniques. IMHO the pain and damage from strikes to joints can be mitigated/eliminated with proper training.

I'm thinking the best option might just be a commercial barbell with weight load only on one side. I'd like something more traditional looking (ie wood handle) but it terms of design strength this might be the way to go...

I'm a big believer in the very gradual but continuous approach. Obviously, if you over train an area you should protect the area and allow it to heal (hit medicines can be useful for injuries). Besides the actual conditioning, rubbing the area(s) afterward and stretching the relevant joints and muscles is important. As I mentioned before, I strongly believe that conditioning works best when it is integrated into a more comprehensive kiko training regimen.

These are plastic jars filled with bricks and rocks for weight. If you google "2.5 gallon barrel jars" they should come right up. One warning though, I am 6'3" so I have a pretty wide grip. The mouth of these jars might be too large for the bent thumb grip that is essential for nigiri-game training if you are a smaller person

i have started use flexible hitters recently the last few years i was reduced to using a dowel because of financial situation was using a dowel as a hitter completely futile or was it better than nothing i felt my bones have toughen up a lot because of it n i can take hits better in sparring better because of it

If you don´t mind the appearance, it´s easy to find very useful jars at suplements stores. A jar of Whey protein would fit well...

Answer Part 1) I have continued to use a bamboo hitter and the stainless steel hitter on strained muscles and the was no ill effect (obviously this may depend on the severity of the injury and the forced used). In fact, the vibrations seemed like a soothing massage and probably increase blood flow. So as along as the swelling has gone down, it may actually help in terms of recovery time. The bean bag may have too much weight to use in this way (ie cause re-injury).

Unfortunately I have not made a Kongoken. Michael Clarke has an excellent book on Hojo Undo that has a design for a pvc pipe kongoken. I'm planning on building it at some point. I'll let you know how it works when its done. If you finish yours before I do, I'd love you to post here about it (or PM me if you prefer) and tell us what you think of it. Feel free to make a video response if you want, as I'm sure many youtubers would be very interested in how your pvc kongoken turns out!

Reply part 2). Deep penetration is really more a matter of weight than flexibility. I'm not sure about the physics of it, but from experience I can tell you that inflexible hitters often have LESS penetration. MUNG beans (which are quite dense and small) have very deep penetration. Believe it or not, you have to be more careful with the beans than you do with the steel hitter. The force from Mung beans will travel as deeply in as an iron bar (but will do less damage to the overlying tissues).

I can't give medical advice but I personally believe a bamboo hitter is safe for use on any area. I personally use the stainless steel hitter everywhere but I'd suggest caution about using much force on joints including the spine. I use a chi-ishi for the my thighs and abdomen because of the added weight, but using a chi-ishi is definitely bad if used on joints and/or boney areas. It may be too much for beginners even on meaty areas. Listen to your body. It knows what is OK better than I do.

As I mention in the video, I've never used a dowel as a hitter. A dowel with a little flex is probably good. A very stiff dowel is less good because it takes longer to condition the entire surface of the bone and it is easier to accidentally over-train (hit too hard) and cause injury. Reasonably careful use could certainly be beneficial, and your own experience seems to prove that. If you felt that it worked, it almost certainly worked ... It's doubtful that you just "imagined" the benefits ;-)

when training conditioning is it better to pace urself at a rate where u train a lil by lil everyday or should u train it all in 1 day the way i always trained it was train it all in 1 day then rest until the body part completely heals n then train again but i dont know if this method is safe or not
