The Rode PodMic is an insanely popular microphone designed specifically for podcasting. It usually sells for about $100, so I wanted to compare it with two other popular $100 mics: the Shure SM57 and the Shure SM58.
I previously compared the PodMic the the Shure SM7B, and while I think the Shure sounded better overall, I honestly don’t know if it sounded $300 better. You can get 4 Podmics for the price of one SM7B, and if you’re setting up a podcast on a budget, that’s a big deal!
And all mics are being recorded without any processing or effects directly into the Rodecaster Pro

I saw the interface you use. Are you using anything else? I find that the output of the SM58 using an audio interface is kind of low. Wondering if you are using an inline pre-amp or something else.

The SM57 is internally identical to the SM58. In fact the SM57 is the official vocal mic for the President Of The United States.

I knew the White House has used them for years, and always found that super interesting. So I guess the only difference is the pop filter?

@stopmonkey47452

The only difference is the windscreen. The president uses them because the 57's locking windscreen looks better than the 58 with an added windscreen. Other good options (for a bit more money) are the shure beta 56a drum mic, beta 57a instrument mic, and beta 58a vocal mic, which are all the same guts. 56 and 57 have the same grille with minimal screen, while the 58 has virtually the same grille as the sm58. I actually sing live into a beta 56a drum mic because it can't get by a passerby and soundmen won't think its theirs and steal my mic during teardown. (edited to remove a typo)

@@tombuck the only major difference is the frequency response that is more flat on the 57, thats why you'll hear more highs on it. and since the 57 and 7b capsules are also almost the same, u can make the 57 sound *identical* as its brother that costs like 300 bucks more. + on an 57 u dont need an cloud lifter, on the 7b you'll pretty much need one

For streaming I've been using SM58's from being in a band 10 years ago...still work fantastic. Glad this confirmed I didn't need to go out and buy some mics designed for podcasting. You're right on the versatility as well. I can go from speaking at my desk to singing karaoke in the middle of the house with no issues.

I'm stunned by the price of the SM58. The last time I bought one was almost 30 years ago. It was between $80 and $100 back then, so with the rate of inflation I'm surprised it's not going for at least $125 to $150 today.

This is a solid video and basically the conclusions I've came to after a few days of research. For guitarists/musicians, a SM57 is worth having as you can double as an instrument mic, but I agree for podcast/voice-over specific people, the Podmic or SM58 is the way to go.

I’ve always recorded my published rap and r&b songs with condenser mics (like the mxl 770) and I’ve been doing asmr and podcasting lately. My M-Box mini was made in 2005 and is still ticking but the preamps seem weak. I tried the M-Audio Air 192 and the software/drivers are horrid. So I’m glad you reviewed the Scarlet 2i2. I’m enjoying your videos about mics because I just always assumed that the classically shaped 58 mics were for live singers and not studio vocals. So, thanks. I’ve been binge watching your channel as much as the Omeleto channel, lol.

Exactly, the 58 is the best. The proximity effect makes the perfect eq at the source. The transformer is wound to pick up more lows than the 57 and the highs are smoother due to the grill. Take the grill off and you have a 57 with more lows. The 58 is more versatile because the 57 grill is not removable and is woven tighter to control spl from instruments. So... no, the 57 is not "just as good" just because that's the one you own.

The Podmic has a really great look and nice hefty build quality that is very appealing. The SM57 doesn't have the screen appeal, but with the A2WS locking windscreen it looks camera ready and the sound is really hard to beat. The SM57 was my first podcasting mic. As a newcomer to mics I bought and tried a bunch of different dynamic and condenser mics, and while there are many very nice looking products out there - most of which sound quite good - I just keep coming back to the SM57 for the audio quality it delivers. I put podcast interview guests on a condenser with a pop filter in front of it because they don't always speak right into the mic or have good mic discipline and technique. Right now I'm very happy with the Neat Worker Bee II for my guests. In a treated room I might switch to the King Bee II myself, but for my current space a dynamic mic like the SM57 works best.

If you want an sm7b, get sm57 and EQ it. Everyone knows they have similar frequencies (flat). The sm58 however does not have the correct frequency to imitate the sm7b, but even with headphones I can't tell the difference between the sm57 and sm7b when the sm57 is EQ'd correctly. You can find videos on the EQ settings within KZfaq.

Very few things can top the "cool factor" of the Super 55. But yeah, the 58 is incredibly versatile. I've always thought of it as kind of like a Fender Strat. If you ask someone who knows nothing about guitars to imagine a guitar, they'll probably think of a Strat. If you ask someone who knows nothing about microphones to imagine a mic, they'll probably think of the SM58.

They all sound very similar! But it seems like the difference is in the low end. In this order: 57/58/pod mic of most robust low end. I was wondering if that was because of the angle in which you were speaking into the mic?

I don’t think the angle has much to do with it, but your ordering makes sense. The 57 has the least amount of pop filtering, the 58 has a bit more, and the PodMic is somewhat notoriously lacking on the low end. 👍

I'm in the minority that I think I prefer the PodMic. It doesn't have that deep broadcaster thing that I kinda think has gone out of style with most youtubers using a lav or a shotgun mic and I also find that the proximity effect of both the 57 and the 58 to be more obvious. This becomes an issue when the talent gets closer and further from the mic. The PodMic seems more balanced and neutral. And you can add a bid of low mids if you want that type of sound. Thanks for doing this.

The podmic sounds thin as compared to sm57 and 58 but that is because it's eq'ed in such a way that you don't have to later on. the sm58 and 57 sound a bit muddy so you will need to clean them up with an eq. So I think for podcast podmic wins. In case if somebody is a singer or guitarist as well as a youtube podcaster than sm57 and 58 will be better I think.

Hi there Tom. Hope all safe and well on either side of blue wall. Can I thank you so much for your fantastic tutorial videos. They have been tremendous help. This morning got possession of the pod mic for my rodecaster pro. Had been using a Shure SM58 and no problem. However now I have a hum when I plug in my headphones to front socket. It registers on the levels but I don't want to use Noise Gate. I have set my mic to pod mic setting. Could it be the cheap headphones I am using or would changing to headphone socket at rear make a difference at all. Thanks in advance. John

Congrats on the new gear! There shouldn't be a different between the front and rear headphone outputs, but the Rodeacaster's headphone preamps are always a bit noisy (although you said this is registering on the levels meter). I wold start be replacing headphones/cables to see if you find the culprit there.

Do you recommend having two different branded mics when having 2-3 guests using the Rodecaster Pro? Im getting mixed reviews on whether this is vital or not. Your channel has helped me tremendously so far :)
@tombuck
@tombuck 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cassie! As far as mics go, I would just use whatever you have to get started. I think common advice is to match mics whenever possible, but you can always play with the settings to make different mics sound good together. Start simple and upgrade as necessary. For GarageBand, you should be able to drag the file directly from the memory card into a new project. If you’re recording with multi track, then all of the separate tracks should show up.

So you have just created a big problem for me and that is when it came down to the sm58 and the rode podmic I felt they sounded the same and was set on getting the podmic just for looks. Unfortunately I know am I only wondering how the podmic would sound with a pop filter because when you put the pop on the sm58 it sounds much better but if the rode can sound like that with the filter I want the rode.
@tombuck
@tombuck 4 жыл бұрын
Tricky decision for sure. The PodMic has a built in pop filter, but I think it’s a tad weak. Some bigger filters, like ones for the SM7B will fit on it, but I don’t have one. The SM58 is more versatile, but the PodMic works treat and is more visually appealing (which might matter in some circumstances). I personally own two PodMics and am very happy with them.

Since he mentioned the Blue Yeti at the end, I would personally not recommend buying a Blue Yeti especially if you're a beginner to audio, and by no means in my an expert I've just found the Blue Yeti takes a lot of tweaking to not pick up a ton of background noise, and I believe the SM57 or 58 are cheaper, and from what I've seen more intuitive... Again, take this with a grain of salt, 'cause I'm not an audio engineer, but I personally would rather have bought a different mic.

You're very much on point, the 57/58 are much more reliable and better sounding mics. The benefit of a Yeti or other similarly priced USB mic is that it's plug and play with no need for an interface of anything, and that's helpful for a lot of people. 👍
