I have a 98 TLS and i found its only real weakness is its framework. It just isn't stiff enough for the fantastic V-twin engine, but it still is a superb bike to ride. I'm very happy with mine!

Thank you for the review. This kind of reviews I like and I dare to say we need them more. I like to watch and read all about the latest bikes, but also I like to know a lot about older bikes because they are affordable. And with which you actually can have the same amount of fun. Many of us have a lot of fun on these 'youngtimers' and though the latest bikes with the latest technology are superior in handling, acceleration and braking, the youngtimers are still great. Thanks for review

The Aprilia is in a different league to the other bikes. No contest at all, unless you have a strange addiction to petrol stations (where the Honda spends most of it's time) or you want to experience massive tank slappers on an under-damped TL. An SP1 would compare well with the Aprilia, but you can't buy one for RSV money unless it's scrap.

Old comment but still relevant for people searching for used ones: Get a true dual exhaust, 2-in-2, without crossover for your Firestorm, or any V-Twin really. That’s the only way you’ll get that glorious burbling V2 sound... Check @ 4 : 29 here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5Oql6-YyMrPl30.html

I have had mine from 20,000 km to 65,000km. I ride it to work every day in rail and sun. It has never missed a beat. I think you got one that was made on a Friday before a long weekend, when everybody wanted to go home. Sure it aint frugal, but the acceleration that you get is more than payback for lack of range. I love mine.

I've had both an RSV Mille and a '97 TL1000s, from new. I still have the TLS. The RSV was a thing of beauty and handles a better than the TL1000S but you had to be in the correct gear all the time, the TLS doesn't give a fig what gear you are in, you just twist and it pullllls. The TL just has so much character I could never part with it.
@cbwelch4

Agree with Mr. McMartin!!! I have the '97 before they tuned down the motor's output. She's a bit scary to ride and if you don't ask her nicely, she will bite you. Putting stiffer springs up front and an Ohlins damper makes all the difference. Still love her to bits. Can't sell her. In a stoplight war, she'll eat the others for breakfast. Just respect her and she'll reward you. Not for newbies.

I bought an SV650S which had all standard parts over one that was modified slightly. Turns out the modified one was most likely in much better condition. My SV had a dead battery, faulty R/R, both Cam Chain Tensioners had been removed at some point and re-fitted incorrectly (cross threaded, fitted at an angle) and the rear brake had a seized inside piston. All things which I couldn't have really tested before purchasing. A bike having a standard exhaust doesn't mean anything to be honest.

I had a 98 storm in yellow,full renegade system with high level carbon cans,rejetted with k&n,it had also had some head work (not by me)it accelerated faster than the tl andaprilia that my mates had at the time (and I was heaviest) the only trouble was,if you were going banzai,the petrol light would come on after 75 miles 🤦🏻

I went from a sorted Firestorm to an RSV Mille. Aprilia is just fantastic, and have ridden faster bikes which still don't touch it overall. I'm on my second one now. Firestorm though is possibly even better value for money. Genuine 160mph and really easy to ride.

Ive got a Mille and used to have the VTR and Ive gotta say the Aprilia kicks its arse in every way (apart from comfort) It handles miles better, doesnt bottom its forks out... has good ground clearance, is reliable (the fireyawn popped out oil seals) the RSV is quicker and indeed more economical let alone a bigger tank.. Looks loads better too, people comment on the bike whereas the Honda is a bit bland.. Almost bought a TL a couple of times but saw sense :-) All are a lot of bike for the cash!

because although after market don't necessarily mean the bike has been owned by a wheelying weekend warrior type or track day thrasher (although highly likely). Standard Cans do indicate that the bike has been owned by someone that looks after the bike and is aware that there is no real need for aftermarket junk as most sports bikes cannot be ridden to their limits on normal roads. Standard cans indicate a desire to keep the bike and engine in its original designed condition and in good order.

aye it just depends on the previous owner and how handy they are with the spanners.. but if it was mine it would be going to the dealer in standard trim, as i wouldn't be happy accepting a nominal value for any extras i've put on.. for example my r1 has nearly a grands worth of aftermarket parts from a harris carbon end can and jet kit to ohlins shock and a few gilles items etc.. be lucky if the dealer an extra couple of hundred if even that... making it more worthwhile chopping it in standard..

That may be so, however from what the forums suggest and through my own personal experience I would never own one again. I agree with what you say about the acceleration, if you're out on a long ride it's just a complete pain filling up all the time whilst your mates are doing 200 miles a tank. I wasn't bothered about fuel consumption, just the constant visits to the pump lol. Well good luck with yours, it seems to be treating you well.. There was one aspect I was fond of, noise, mine gave lots.

The RSVs, with or without steering dampers, have a lot less tendency to tank slap the rider into oblivion though };-)) But the TLs certainly had a really strong engine, as standard, AND they can be bored out considerably more than the Rotax 990s. Used to do some track stuff with a mate on his TL1000, me on a 2000 model Mille, and the Mille definitely has the edge on braking, entry, mid corner and exit, just from weight difference, but the TL was gaining ground by the end of the straights

Or they can indicate that they have been owned by someone who just wanted it to commute on and never really did any maintenance themselves apart from the standard service intervals. And any maintenance they did do may be suspect. The bikes I do see with aftermarket parts tend to look in much better condition than those with all standard parts. This could also be down to people who have a real interest in bikes will probably adapt or fit aftermarket parts to make the bike more how they want it.

sure, get the TL if you want to die on teh next corner, or if you only ride in straight lines. Get the Aprilia if you like being bent over a barrel and raped every time you need to get it serviced, or need a part. If you want hassle free, reliable, comfortable, cheap FUN, then get the Honda. It has a decent torque curve and accelerates out of the blocks as quick as any - 3.1 seconds to 100km./hr, and hits 100km/hr in first. Seriously, who needs more than that. It also has decent handling.

Only thing wrong with the TLS is the back suspension and the clutch. The engine is awesome, but they all have that weird "tik" sound in it. Why the fuck did Suzuki make a rotary demper and a shockdemper in the rear... And WHY did the put that stupid rotary demper next to the exhaustbend of the second cillinder, thats getting HOT! making the oil thin and you can adjust that thing cold then it rides fine but when the oil inside heats up its just a piece of unnecessary crap and weight to your bike!
