Great video, just bought a 2004 XB 12R!!

WARNING, if you are using thread sealant there is no need to torque your drain plug bolts to any specific setting. Just get it snug + 1/4 turn and BACK OFF, unless you want to strip the threads!

Got a buell recently. Had a problem getting oil to the rite height on the dip stick. Ended up putting to much in. Now I gotta siphon some out

@Timo31 Buell XB owners can find the info in the owners manuel and if you've drained your primary then you know it takes 1 quart ;^)

alot of forums say mobile one v-twin full synthetic is the best you can use for these buells... no matter the oil you use it needs to be 20w50. I just bought this stuff for my bike today

I believe it is only 2 1 quarts into the swingarm after the 4 oz that went in the oil filter. Total is 2.5 quarts. Make sure to check the level but do not over fill.

Just did oil change on 08 XB12R... My lower cowl has small nuts on the backside that are a pain in the A to get to.... I will probably just take tin snips to the fricken lower cowl next time and save the hour and a half it took to do ONLY the oil filter. Why wasn't it designed for the filter to have a clear path straight on from the side? Or better yet Buell should have just left the filter in front of the engine like Harley-Davidson designed it in the first place.

...and the best part is, I have a carpet just like that in my garage. My wife couldn't believe that's what I used it for!

wow! this video is great! I ride a 03 xb9s what oil filter and oil would you suggest for someone that lives nowhere near a HD dealer parts numbers? I was told to use Mobil One 15W50 Engine: Mobil one Gear Oil 75W90 idk about the filter would this be ok? anyones help would be great! thanks :)

I just bought a 2008 Lightining XB12 with 981 miles on it. I am a new rider and wanted to change the oil for winter storage. This is my first time owning a bike. I see you changed the oil at 2 locations on the bike. Main storage tank oil and the Primary. I do not understand why do you change and add oil at the Primary? Can you explain me the difference?

The primary holds the gearbox oil which is separate from the motor on a Buell. It also lubs the clutch and primary chain. Look after that low mileage bike of yours it"ll be worth some money in the future!!!

Putting locktite on drain bolt ....that's a first never seen or done that on any vehicle I've owned and if you don't degrease the threads after draining the oil out the locktite won't work anyway .

Same thing for 2005 xb9sx?

its VERY important to not over tighten ANYTHING that screws into the primary case cover. (inspection cover bolts clutch cable drain plugs clutch cover) in fact i would stick to the lowest end of the torque spec scale. just an example if it reads 8-10 ft lbs torque that shit to 8 ft lbs. just to be safe.) primary covers are INSANELY SOFT METAL. like as soft as lead solder. (not really but still very very soft) id say its comically soft metal but theres nothing comical about stripping bolts on the primary cover.

why do you have to warm up the bike before you change the oil ? where can you buy locktight ?

My screws are stripped at the head where I add oil to primary... Can I add it where I change clutch linkage??

I have a 2001 Thunderbolt I like the newer XB models but it would scare me to have one since Buell is no longer in business what if that engine needs rebuilt where are you going to get the parts for that nothing in those newer engines is Harley proprietary that's the only thing that worries me getting me a new one

The torque measurements are way off and after going on a lot of forums they say this is a common problem because the specs where misprinted. It should be closer to 10-12 ft-lb. I just found out the hard way when I stripped my drain plug at 26 ft-lb and am pretty pissed that it was the direction given in this video. While everything else was good I wouldn't trust the ft-lb or else it will cost you a couple of hundred to fix. www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/305911.html?1280541778

WOW you didn't drain the crank case oil. this does not drain back through the swing arm or out through the oil filter. It is drained through an Allen bolt located on the bottom of the right crank case. without dropping this bolt your motor will still contain a good half pint of old oil. I know this as I have just split my xb12 and rebuilt it cheers Joe
