In this video tutorial, I will show you how to repair and fix the common Buffalo NAS problem where the LED flashes blue due to a corrupt filesystem, faulty hard drive or an upgrade. This works on the LS-XL series (LS-X1.0TL, LS-X2.0TL, LS-X3.0TL) (EU, US, JP) and please note that all data will be erased following this repair and upgrade, this should only be used as a last resort and there is always a risk of a bricked device when flashing a new firmware.
This tutorial requires you to download:
1. Buffalo LinkStation LS-XL NAS Firmware 1.65 goo.gl/SgxsbZ
2. TFTPd goo.gl/BZyQkh
initrd PW: YvSInIQopeipx66t_DCdfEvfP47qeVPhNhAuSYmA4
uImage PW: aAhvlM1Yp7_2VSm6BhgkmTOrCN1JyE0C5Q6cB3oBB

I never thought I'd be able to fix the NAS. I upgraded my NAS with a new one and thought of selling it so naturally I properly wiped the drives and did a firmware reset. Only when I came to look at it I knew something was wrong. It did did take me a while even with watching the video to fix it. The step were you deleted the partitions on your harddrive, I'd left a partition that the disk management wouldn't get rid of. I used the free version of EaseUS Partition Master to get rid of the partition and then checked it on the disk management to see that it looked the same in the video. If you don't do this the drive won't format and you get an error when running the firmware updater program. Great tutorial and I'd advise watching every step to make sure you don't go wrong. Its very nice of buffalo to make something a complete nightmare if you accidently wipe the disks or you don't have raid 5 setup to back harddrive 1 up.

Lifesaver. I’ve had a brick of a linkstation sat round for ages. One issue I had was tftp wasn’t saving its changes. Ran as administrator and everything worked as advertised. Thanks

Great video - thank you. The firmware linked in the description didn't help with my Japanese model LS-WX2.0TL/J but once I'd downloaded the official FW from the Japanese Buffalo site the methodology demonstrated was the same. For any who may be struggling my tips would be run the TFTPd as Administrator, and (as outlined in video) use a switch (or crossover cable). I had neither but after a few failed tries with a single cable, connecting two cables together with a dollar store female-female RJ45 extender all turned out well! The copying, renaming, zipping and unzipping of initrd and uImage files may need different passwords depending on the firmware you need for your device but it seems there are only four passwords in use (search the Buffalo forums) and then trial and error them.

Absolutely brilliant! Restored my defunct LS-WXL NAS to full working order. However mine did not reload the 2 files again like yours did. Also it took nearly an hour to format the 1Tb hard drives in RAID 0 before rebooting and starting normally. Thanks for posting. 👍

Excellent tutorial...had some troubles in the beginning...what helped was: - TFTP tool needs to be started in admin mode if it doesn't save the settings (as you need to restart it to apply the settings this is important. Is not necessary if you use the oirtable version of the tool I guess) - Deactivated the firewall of Norton (don't know if this was necessary) - Touched the button on my linkstation live (I think this was the most important step which I missed) Possible I missed the first and last step in your video or the last step doesn't apply on your slightly different NAS.

Thanks! Great video. Very helpful. One question - can I use any size hard drive as a replacement? The buffalo website has a list of recommended hard drives, do I have to stay with one of those? My LS-X2.0tl originally had a 2TB drive. Do I have to stay at that size, or during the re-format, will any size, any drive work?

Hi, after help of possible? I have the X1.0TL-EU, I haven't used it for over 5yr so forgot login details. I only want the drive to show up as a network drive. I'm not interested in the web access option. I can access the files using the 'twonky website' but I don't want to use that as file manager is so much simpler looking. Any help would be much appreciated.

Good video but replace your power supply first. I had the flashing blue light and it turned out that the power supply wasn't putting out enough power to run two drives. I pulled one drive and it booted with two it just flashed the blue light. Replaced the power supply and it's back up on two drives.

Questions: 1. My LS-XL has firmware 1.74 already and it is the latest. Can I "update" it with the same firmware and get into debug to partiiton? 2. Are you saying that the webserver portion on the NAS needs to be re-built to the new hard drive in order to format it? 3. What if I want to replace the hard drive of a working ls-xl? Do I still need to flash the firmware or could I just put a drive in my case? 4. Tftp is not running on my NAS. How do I get it to run to accept the file transfer?
@TitasPetkevicius

Update with 1.74 firmware again. when you take both disks and try to put bigger ones all firmware is removed with your old disks. so follow steps and you will be fine. on some nas need press function button to obtain ip
@jpvoodoo5522
@jpvoodoo5522 3 жыл бұрын
@@TitasPetkevicius , It won't allow you to flash it again. There is a setting in an ini file that you have to change. Easy enough. So the "firmware" is not stored on an EEPROM then. It is actually present on the hard drive. I.E it is not separate from the hard drive, rather it exists on a separate partition not accessible from the web utility. So it must be installed first if you wipe the drive or replace it. Is this correct?
@TitasPetkevicius

@@jpvoodoo5522 i have backup files first, then remove both drives, added 4tb drives. Changed entries on ini file and then started flash with assigned io from soft on video. When flash was done, connected back to lan with dhcp. Reconfigure raid from strip to mirror and copy data back. It took several days but all was done on 1.74 firmware Drives was empty formatted as gpt on windows without partition creation.

Ok, a year after your post, I'm getting the same issue. One HDD went duff, as reported by the nas. Formatted it in PC and worked fine. After bricking the nas (after copying all the files from the working hdd), was able to restore using the one good disk and TFTPing the firmware back on (having formatted the good disk). Carried on playing, trying to get both disks to work, but now getting the same error as you. I think buffalo are a bit crap, should not have to go through all of this to recover the machine. Also the disks are in a linux format (so buffalo tech tell me) so one cannot even get the data back by connecting to a pc. If the nas chassis fails, then everything is lost. I'm going to buy a new nas, WD seem best for price, but going to research first, to check disks are readable by a pc in the event of a chassis fail.

you have to change the ls configurate settings by adding [Flags] VersionCheck = 0 NoFormatting = 0 [SpecialFlags] Debug=1 over the existing version of version check , it will be showing version 1 then save it then try again

Hello, I know next to nothing about networks but i'm trying to breath life into an old Buffalo LS-XL NAS. All was going well until i saved the settings in TFTP (about 13 minutes in to the video). I got this message: Tftpd32 Error 10049The requested address is not valid in its context. Tftpd32 tried to bind the tftp port to the interface 192.168.11.l which is not available for this host Either remove the tftp service or suppress 192.168.11.1 interface assignation. Now as I said I'm not super technical but I'll fill you on on the journey to get there... downloading, unzipping, renaming and moving files - fine. My desktop machine has wireless as well as wired internet so i unplugged the ethernet cable, connected to my home internet via wifi (so i could carry on watching the video and assigned the 192.168.11.1 address as per your instructions. i did notice that the server interfaces was not the same as yours so I changed it to 192.168.11.1 to be the same as yours. (Is this where I went wrong?). Anyway, as I saved the settings and got the message as above. I closed down TFTP and tried again but got the same message. Still I could make it go away so I ploughed anyway. When I connected the NAS with the power cable and the crossover lead the drop down box indicating the server interfaces blinked a lot and nothing happened on TFTP. A few messages did appear on the log server which I can share f you think they are relevant - the first was about a message being received on an unbound interface: 192.168.11.70. no idea what that all about. And so i'ts all come to a grinding halt. If you could offer a word of advice I'd be really grateful. If we could set up a zoom call or something I'd make sure there was a drink it for you.
