I was afraid to click on and open this video...especially with the thumbnail picture.(Why they are knocking that building down .?.Idk..maybe another God forbid parking lot?)But so far as I'm watching this and its rather a positive look at my hometown..Despite the abismal facts on population loss and gains..Appreciate what you have done here..Maybe you should read up on Washington DC developer Douglas Jemel and all the buildings he's buying up and redeveloping..Its quite amazing ..Thank You for doing this video..

The night before we arrived in Buffalo I researched the city. There were many articles reporting that it was the poorest city in New York, one of the poorest in the US, etc. So I drove into downtown expecting a run down dump. I first went to the riverfront, saw the lighthouse, the sailboats, the downtown in the background of the sailboats, and was floored by the beauty. None of that changed as I walked around downtown, especially after seeing that incredible city hall building. I was so happy to show that Buffalo is a really beautiful city. Then there was the incredible food. What!!? That too? I was so happy to report that Buffalo is amazing.

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip - A little more history, I was always told about. The city was started during the - 1900 - World's Far. The city hall is the center of a wheel going out with roundabouts & gardens in the middle. There are 15 college campuses (3 are Erie Community College). South Buffalo has Our lady of Victory national Shrine & Basilica. The Botanical Gardens is also right there. My parents brought my 4 sisters & 2 brothers there ever Easter. I was transferred to Buffalo in the early 2000s, and went kicking and screaming. The stories that I had heard/been told about this city were not pleasant, and the weather upon my arrival (early Jan.) was rough, as the largest snowfall in 20+ yrs had just fallen. I moved to the upper West Side and stayed for 3yrs. All of that negativity was not justified, as I ended up enjoying my time there, met great friends, and loved the seasons. I just went back to visit friends and felt a bit of nostalgia.

I get a little teary eyed when I think of Buffalo. I grew up 45 min north outside the city in the suburbs and never was really allowed to venture down there by myself growing up. It took some friends, family, and being married to finally let me explore the city more and I gotta say it gets more and more beautiful with each time I visit and have time to stop and enjoy. There are some really cool things I've been to. There's Shakespeare in Delware Park that I love to visit. My favorite place is Broaderick Park where I can watch the Peace Bridge change colors at night and walk along the path and then get off the path under the rails, and sit on the rocks safely and eat a snack. The Buffalo Japense Garden is exquisite behind the Buffalo History Museum. And there is soo much to mention. But I now live 45 mins south of Buffalo in another county and I always feel like Buffalo is home even though I lived in the Suburbs. And I miss home in some ways. But I visit often as my brother, Uncle, and birth mom live there. And I visit my adopted family often in the suburbs. But I love that my husband has fallen in love also with the city and the suburbs too. He grew up in the heart of the county below Erie in Chautauqua County. So my area was brand new to him sorta, and he has fallen in love with it just as I have. I never get tired of seeing the beautiful shots of the buildings and history. It's really cool to see it when u come in to landing from the plane. Beautiful view u'll ever see. U see buildings, houses, and greenery as far as the eye can see. Amazing.

The "Armpit of the East" designation referred to the sulfur smell that would permeate the air, the odor was from the steel mills that lined the waterfront for miles in Lackawanna. Ingots of molten steel were dumped directly into a bath of sulfuric acid, to cure the steel. The toxic steam produced belched out of the huge smokestacks on the converter buildings. I believe that the Bessemer converters operated nonstop, 24/7. And there were a lot of them. The mills shut down years ago. My grandfather worked at Bethlehem Steel, the USW, as a roustabout, until shortly before his death.

I would gladly snuggle into the "armpit os America" my home town. Born in KMH, lived in Tonawanda till 4 y/o, moved to the thriving megalopolis of Marilla where cows out numbered people. A place where your next dorr neighbor was a piece or two down the road. Work was hard and rewarding far beyond coins and currency. Where you had a real trust in your neighbors and a real community existed. Everyone willing to stand in the gap arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder. I currently live in Miami. A real hell-hole city of unfriendly people full of greed and suspicion, who would just as much cut your throat as to shot you dead at the drop of a hat. Aweful heartless souless people theives, thugs, child peddlers, pimps, nest of rats and snakes. I would leave tomorrow if only I could. I miss my home town. I recall the smell of the soil, the scent of the red pine forrest after a thunderstorm, freshly baled timothy, corn silage, the sweet breath of the horse resting her head on my shoulder, the smell of maple sap boiling in the wood-fired evaporator, the smell of the wood timbers in the attic bedroom of my grandmothers 140 y/o house, the sounds of the meddow pond, bullfrogs, tree frogs. Cool evening breezes, sitting in front of a woodstove sipping coffee and chewing the fat. It is my hope and God willing, to move back to Buffalo. One of my few regrets in life was finding the need to leave in the first place. Thanks for your comments keyup, I would gladly take the armpit given the opportunity.

Born and raised. Buffalo is a near compete S**t Hole. Poor, broken down, dangerous. Canalside is built on an open sewer, anyone who could leave (me included) did and the self image is so bad the locals get their 'Community Pride' from transient mercenary athletes and money leech owners who vacuum the money to Florida. Delusional. It has been all downhill since McKinley was shot, then the St Lawrence Seaway bypassed the city by making the Erie Canal commercially superfluous.

They also make Lucky Charms at that General Mills plant. Sometimes when you're driving on the i-190 expressway you can smell it.... you also could have taken the Cave of the Winds tour at Niagara falls. It's a Stairway and walkway that goes down and right in front of the bridal veil Falls on the American side... Also, if you go just a little bit further north from Niagara Falls and stop at Lewiston you can take a jet boat tour . It's a high-powered dual jet boat that takes tours of people through the Rapids of the lower Niagara River and gets everybody splashed wet with River water! ... and then there's Old Fort Niagara . ...You'll have to come back sometime to see some more and go to a Buffalo Bills football game!

Overall, housing and rents in San Diego County are very expensive and no vacant space for newer homes. However the weather is usually very pleasant, some good restaurants, the coast is beautiful, lots of activities, concerts, world class and first class entertainment, zoo, museums, LaJolla, Del Mar and its racetrack, all the beach communities, Shelter Island and Harbor Island and Coronado. 4 time straight losers I may add of the Stupid Bowl as well. No Stanley Cups either for the Sabers in 52 years. No MLB team no NBA team oh wait you had NBA team but they left for lack fans did they not yes that is right they were the Buffalo Braves but they left for San Diego in 78 and are now the L.A. Clippers. Maybe the Bills will pack and move to San Diego like the NBA team did. Can barely hold on to their NFL team if wasn't for the fan base in Southern Ontario the Bills would have packed up and moved long ago.

The Buffalo All-Americans, were a founding team of the National Football League in 1920 but they didn't last long... another WNY team was a member of the first NFL teams, the Tonawanda Kardex Lumbermen who played one league game and folded... the Buffalo Bisons/Bills appeared in the late 1940s in the All American Football Conference. When AAFL folded in 1949, three teams were admitted into the NFL, the San Francisco 49s, Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts, Buffalo almost made it eventually lost out ... Then in 1960 the Bill were reformed as an AFL team and became an NFL team when the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.

Glad you took my suggestion on visiting Buffalo/Niagara Falls! I told a friend who was leaving my company and thinking about being a traveling nurse about Buffalo, and I don’t think he believed me until I sent him the KZfaq video “Are You Right for Buffalo”. Even though he was initially polite, he reacted with great surprise a lot like you guys a few days later when I showed him the video. If you ever come back to the area, visit Niagara on the Lake on the Canadian side during the summer. Keep up the great work!

I use to go there almost every weekend to party only an hour away from me in Canada to me it is just water going over a cliff. Seen the falls that much. The Canadian side of the Falls is a lot better then the US side of the falls. NIAGARA FALLS NY. is a toxic waste dump it really is look up Love Canal the city is run down when you compare it to NIAGARA FALLS Ontario so much more to do on the Canadian side.

I’ve been to New York City but it never dawned on me to visit Buffalo or Niagara Falls. They’re both cool. Even the General Mills factory was awesome. The history of buffalo wings and the low wages were interesting facts. I’m quite surprised the wages are so low but glad to hear crime is lower too. All in all, this looks like a place I hope to visit. Thanks for the tour. 👏

Nicely done. Another thing I appreciate about Spoda's videos is that he doesn't hawk products or beat you over the head to hit the like and subscribe buttons. I don't think I've ever seen that and it's appreciated. Content providers have to earn the likes/subscriptions and subscribers (at least this one) resents being badgered on so many channels to "hit the like and subscribe buttons" before we've even had a chance to evaluate the content and determine if it's worthy. Sheesh. Spoda is worthy. He's kind of like Video Muzak with the low key delivery spiced with history, facts, and interesting local lore. And he can fly a drone. You've come a long way from the early stuff shot in your den, Spoda, and it shows. Start thinking about what you 're going to do when this trip is over - travel is your thing so hope you'll take another lap or two around the country.

Thank you for the kind words. I decided early on not to hawk products or constantly talk about subscribing/hitting the bell because quite frankly, it annoys me when I watch other channels that do it. This channel has become very successful and I'm getting emails weekly from companies wanting me to sell their crap for them. But I won't ever be doing it. I'm fine doing this exactly as I am. The KZfaq advertising revenue is plenty. Ads on travel channels, it turns out, pays very well. And the wife and I will be doing this for a long time. Again, thank you and I'm glad you're watching. :)

I have lived in the Buffalo-Niagara area for all of my 64 years. For more than 40 years I have worked in field service in and around the area. For much of that 40 years I watched the downtown area slowly die. The past 10 years the city has come alive again in ways I never expected. There's a drone video someone did of the city empty in the spring of 2020, during lockdown, and it was kind of heart breaking to see the old girl so still and quiet again.

My family moved from Toronto to Buffalo in 1911. I was born there in 63. I have great memories there. I left in 06. I was outside with the snowblower for the second time on a February afternoon in 06, it was freezing cold and windy and the snowplow came along and buried the end of my driveway again. After I got done blowing out the driveway again I put the snow blower in the garage, I walked in the house, grabbed a beer, looked at my wife (who is from Texas) and told her "you have two choices". She looked at me kind of strange and asked me what I meant. I told her "Florida or Texas we are selling this house, I'm not doing this again next year". We bought a house in Texas a couple months later. I sure do miss Buffalo but not in the winter time. It's a beautiful area of the country, it's kept clean, the people are a proud people, there is plenty of entertainment and culture. Summers in Western New York can't be beat, there is so much going on there because Buffalonians are experts at squeezing so many outdoor activities into such a short period of warmer weather. Even my Texas wife was sad to leave Bflo, she loves it there.

Buffalo has an unjust, negative reputation among many in the Northeast. It has a rich history, closely knit neighborhoods, magnificent early high rise architecture and plenty of friendly pubs. The Falls (both of them) are mirrors of eternity. Everything about them in your video was exactly identical to my memory of them 30 years. Humbling to think of such voluminous quantities of water pouring forth continuously for eons. Same Maid of the Mist experience too. Surprised to see that your immediately preceding (unless I missed some) video was in W. VA., quite a distance away.

I had read many articles before arriving to Buffalo that it was the poorest city in New York, among the poorest in the country, etc. I expected a run down, old city. It was absolutely not. It has a beautiful, vibrant downtown and just like you said, a lot of one of a kind pubs and restaurants. Niagra Falls was totally worth the effort as well. It's one of our favorites places we have visited. Anyway, the drive from Morgantown to Buffalo wasn't too bad, about 5 hours. That's a little longer than we normally drive, But were really wanted to visit Buffalo. :)

I've just discovered your channel and it's fascinating! I was born, raised, and still live in Buffalo (27 years old). It has grown on me so much since I was younger. I go into the city itself 3 times a week for different regular activities, as I live a little bit outside of the city. One of my favorite areas of the city, although I don't go often, is the Elmwood Village area. Lots of little shops around there and the surrounding area is really making a comeback. Also, as others have mentioned, you can occasionally smell Cheerios or Lucky charms in different parts of the city depending on the time of day and what way the wind is blowing, and it's delightful. It'd be interesting if you checked out Rochester or Syracuse, too.

I loved Buffalo as a place to be, loved the people, loved the Erie County fair, loved Shea's Buffalo, loved the proximity to Niagara Falls. The bike trail along the Erie Canal is wonderful. Housing is still slightly pricey for this area. I'm from the city next door and I pay $6K per year in property taxes on a home that is worth around $170K. In other words, we western NYers pay around the national average for housing, but we get screwed if we sell our homes and move to an area where home values are higher. Our area has a ton to offer as far as tourism and I love it here, but NYC seems to steal the spotlight when New York is mentioned to those who aren't from our state.

Every one of your videos is high quality. Great visual content and commentary. You never compromise that standard, and that is unusual in the KZfaq world.

Boost Buffalo it's good for you!-was a PR campaign to "boost Buffalo"-we were so beat up in the 60's til about 20 years ago, when people embraced Buffalo's unique heritage, amazing architecture and fabulous food. I on the other hand, growing up smelling cheerios on my way to school, have always loved "The Queen City". Buffalo warrants her own video-you just scratched the surface!-better yet-keep her a secret!...come visit again! There is so much more!
