My best skill is holding a note longer than the average person because I'd learned to swim even before I learned to walk so breath control was the easiest part. @@Attmay When I first heard the report about Buffy Sainte Marie, and her ancestral claims, I was thinking exactly the same thing. I am in my mid-60s. Being that age, I am (of course) a fan of music from the era of Buffy Sainte-Marie and all the great 1960s and 1970s pop, folk, and rock music. But my dad was a big fan of the 1930s big bands (Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, etc.), while Al Jolson and Bing Crosby were his favorite singers. I enjoyed listening to that music, and, indeed, do still listen to it every so often on the various online music services. I don’t think Buffy Sainte Marie totally darkened her face. Maybe she did use some darkening makeup, but I’ve had several Italian American friends, especially female, with dark enough features that they could indeed have passed themselves off as Native American/ First Nations to someone like me who is not Native American/ First Nations. I would love to hear Buffy’s real story: maybe in the early years assumptions were made that Buffy was Native American/First Nations, and she didn’t do anything to correct it. As the CBC report indicated, several of her family members had written to newspapers, trying to correct it, but the newspapers ignored it. My speculation (and it is purely speculation on my part) is that in Buffy Sainte Marie’s earlyyears of being a public figure, or somewhere along the line, someone told her she looked Native American/ First Nations. So she ran with it, became technically adopted by a tribe, or at least a family within a tribe (“community”), and has clung to that all these years. Al Jolson, as you correctly alluded to, did deliberately perform in black face. Allowing for the fact that Buffy Sainte Marie’s Italian ancestry may have made her darker than the average white person, I am not going to say that she “did an Al Jolson.” At the moment, that hasn’t come out yet! I must admit after I first watched the CBC Fifth Estate report here on KZfaq, I immediately said to myself something like Al Jolson did it in the 1920s and now it is catching up with Buffy Sainte Marie in the 2020s. The only pass I’m giving her is that from looking at her hands, they appear to be darker than the average white person, again explainable with Italian American heritage. Al Jolson’s hands were obviously white, or he was wearing gloves, so you could not tell. I believe that Al Jolson said that he was using black face in honor of (and out of respect for) the black people- something like that. Maybe he felt it, but, to me, it seemed very flimsy. Al Jolson either mostly had no standing in the black community. Or the black community had a feeling of disdain (or even contempt) towards him. Eddie Cantor, another American white Jewish performer in the 1930s also used black face. The problem and the blessing for Buffy Sainte Marie is that she is or was held in such high regard by the Native American/ First Nations community. Perhaps if she were to “come clean”, I get the feeling that she would probably say something like she had such high regard for the Native American/First Nations community. As for Al Jolson, I realize that some Middle Eastern people of Jewish ancestry are dark. But he was of Russian/Soviet extraction, and definitely was white. A little later in the same week that I posted this, I am doing some slight proofreading (mostly grammar and context corrections and clarifications). I have not made any changes to the focus of what I wrote previously.

It's possible. You can usually tell by comparing an older kinescope, made from a B&W broadcast, with a kinescope make from a color broadcast. The two have very different looks. I haven't looked at this particular one in a while. The kinescopes of the last season of "What's My Line?" are very obviously different in this regard. Everyone looks so...I dunno, tanned. Among other things.

Alot of the G-T gameshows of the mid to late 60s were originally broadcast in color along with a Kinescoped recording as you see here. It was practice in those days to reuse color video tapes so the majority of color episodes of G-T panel shows were wipped out leaving only the Kinescoped versions intact. A handful of TTTT '68 color episodes exist today.
