I think this shows Cordelia is still very shallow and self-centred for dumping Xander because her vacuous friends gave her a hard time, Xander is always seen as the most immature person on the show (i would agree he is up to this point of the show) but I do find it strange that the cast members who are seen as more mature and do stupid shit are forgiven far quicker than Xander, he is not my fav person on the show but I do think he gets a far rougher ride than is fair by the Buffy community on the whole.

But looking at it that way or your way, I still consider Cordelia the better person, especially considering in five years Xander looks at this moment as "good times." Proof, in my opinion, he didn't learn anything. Cordelia may be a more shallow character at this point, but she learned from the episode. Xander only cared that he didn't get caught and got the girl. I don't forgive any character (whether main cast member or non speaking role or any in-between) unless they earn it. Xander doesn't in this situation, nor in many at all over twelve seasons (comics included), nor deals with his issues. That's why he gets a rougher ride by fans than most other characters. Cordelia has one of the best arcs in the franchise, deals with an issue, and earns forgiveness in this episode.

@Moooooogie HEAVY SPOILERS!!! DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE WHOLE SERIES!!! That's most of pop culture, in general. Forget about what was written before when the story moves on. What makes it work well in this show is the fact that The Core Four (for use of a better phrase) think so highly of themselves that when they do wrong they brush it off, surround themselves with the other Core Four and say things like didn't do anything wrong (what Xander directly says to Buffy and Willow after cheating with Willow on Cordelia) to make themselves feel better, all while shitting on both bad guys and other Scoobies members who take responsibility for their mistakes, learn lessons, and try to do better. Out of the core four group, Buffy is the one who learns lessons (and she struggles because Xander and Willow put her down for slaying mistakes). It's part of why Buffy identifies with Cordelia so much when she says, "Well, it beats being alone all by yourself." Even with all the above mentioned Buffy feels alone when around people, as she tells a third-party vampire in _Conversations With Dead People,_ and feels horrible about thinking hrself better, which get to the root of all her issues. Xander never does this with his dad who is the core issue defining him in every way, and Willow never gets to the root of why she became an addict to magic, and Giles never completely trusts Buffy's cjhoices after putting her in charge of her life and leaving only to come back and to leave again over and over throughout S7 on top of that. The core Four all think themselves better than their issues when they aren't. Buffy comes closest which is why she has stronger relationships by the end of the comic than Xander, Willow and Giles, who have friendships, but their issues still keep them distanced. Unlike other shows, this all ties together well as to why character flaws are written off when the crux of the story is over.

Not that I believe in magic and witchcraft, but you’re completely correct in that Diana/Artemis was the wrong Goddess to invoke, given that she was a goddess of the hunt, of the moon, of safeguarding women, and someone who was famously both a virgin and asexual. Amy should have invoked Cupid/Eros, if her intention was for Cordelia to feel romantic love for Xander. The type of mad/frantic love that was depicted in the episode was akin to Aphrodite/Venus’s love, as her “brand” of love was far more akin to being like a madness.

But Willow _also_ loves Xander, and it affected her as well. I think I lean more towards Amy casting the spell incorrectly, or because the locket wasn’t truly an item belonging to Cordelia, because she willingly returned it. Diana is absolutely the wrong goddess to invoke, because she’s not a goddess of love. She, and the goddess she was based on (Artemis) are goddesses of hunting, of the moon and of chastity. Artemis was famously both a virgin and asexual. For the frantic love/obsessive love, it makes 100% more sense to invoke Venus (who was based on Aphrodite). The kind of love she is the deity of was love that was like a madness. If they wanted to invoke a god of _romantic_ love, then it should have been Eros (who Cupid was based on).
