About 5 years ago i found a canvas book bag at a thrift store and paid $5 dollars for it. It is very sturdy with double stitching at the seams. Of course i had to waterproof the canvas myself but it's served me well for a long time. It's about 25L of carrying capacity which is more than enough for my bugout bag.

As you might expect, here in the United States, there might be some extra priorities, to include a rifle and a handgun. I don't carry an AR because the gun-grabbers, here in the States, are increasing the pressure. Instead, I carry a 1929 vintage Russian Mosin-Nagant which has been highly modified. The ammo tends to the heavy side, so a full load-out consists of 110 rounds, for me (at 71, weight is getting increasingly a problem!). Except for a Kevlar helmet, I carry the kind of equipment I used in Vietnam, some 50 years ago. Unfortunately, in the US, the most likely bug-out scenario would have a survival/combat element. By the way, after watching your video where you made a bow and arrows from elements to be found in the forest, I have learned how to do that, myself, successfully! Thank you, and may BOTH of us never have to bug out!

Physician here: you dont take the iodine tablets over age of 45 because the chances are quite high that your thyroid gland already has developed autonomous areas. If your gland has them and they already produce a lot of hormones, taking additional pills could lead to thyreotoxic crisis which is very dangerous. The age of 45 is not chosen randomly but statistically obviously. That doesnt mean that all 30y/o people are free of autonomous areas but you get the point: chances are lower with 30 than with 45. Anyway, if your health system offers thyriotic gland screens, consider doing them whenever your health system gives you the chance to. Taking iodine pills can have severe side effects if you have these autonomous cells in the gland. Also: you have to look up the right dosis for younger children. You cant just give a 3 year old a whole pill. You'll find info on dosage reduction on the leaflet or can get them from a physician/pharmacist. The last thing about that topic: if (big if) a nuclear disaster happens and you dont have iodine pills you can take asap, you should NOT take them after 24+ hours after exposure. Then its too late and you are doing more harm than anything. The reason: the radioactive iodine would be already in your gland and the iodine you take wouldnt help but lead to the radioactive iodine to stay in your body longer. So the ideal time to take these pills would be before you are exposed to radiation. But that wont be the case in a disaster obviously so take them as soon as possible right after exposure. Keep in mind that this is just my knowledge on that topic I've read about in my medical books. I am not an expert for ratiation sickness/exposure. In the end, you should always talk to your doctor first (if available during a crisis) before taking these iodine pills but my guess is, that most doctors never read about that topic anyway since its not party of the university time and later on its just not needed to know because nuclear accidents are quite rare. So keep in mind, iodine pills dont come without side effects.

Something everyone seems to forget, when packing the contents of a backpack or rucksack, is the proper method of how to pack your items. Never pack all of your heavy items towards the bottom of the bag. Place comfortable items towards the front of the bag, especially if the bag is not supported by a pack frame. Place items that are frequently needed towards the top of the bag or outside pockets, if appropriate. There are many good references, such as the Boy Souts, the U.S Army manuals, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and many others. Just do an internet search. Also, don't wait until the last minute. Start early, and practice. See what is needed and discard what is not. Your life and that of others may dependbon the skillset you develop early on.

Too many people overlook training. Cool, you have a 90 pound bugout bag; how far can you carry it? Can you carry it a long distance several days in a row? Do you really need all that stuff? Alternatively, if your plan is to survive on your every day carry, have you ever slept in the rain without a cover? Have you ever spent several days hiking without a change of socks? Three days in the woods walking 12 miles each day will make you change your gear real fast. Just get a little experience and it will pay off plenty later on!

If I could carry everything I needed on my belt then I would but it's not feasible so I shoot for 25-30 lb pack. Even in winter, there's no reason to pack heavier than 50 lbs. But most people don't realize that because they've never used their gear. Walk 12 miles, set up camp, get water, make food, while staying alert and maintaining security the whole time. Now repeat that for 3 days. I promise, you will find something in your pack that you don't really need. You will also discover that you are not going to bushcraft your way out of the problem. Have a place in mind that you are going to. Don't just aimlessly wander the wilderness during the apocalypse. Have a plan and be able to execute it.

Long hiking has been my primary life since 2018, and the logistics is one of the biggest challenges. I have been gradually trying to incorporate forest edibles for nutrition and medicinal use, but it is not at all easy. The biggest factor isn't even location, but season. Most things are available only for a very short period. Hunting and gathering for meager edibles is a useful skill, but realistically only prolongs death (read Into The Wild by Krakaur) Some sort of periodic bounty is necessary to sustain human life, and not too rare at that. So far I'm good with new conifer needles (Vitamin C), dandelions and a few other things. Looking to get some raw stinging nettle root this season and cattail. Dandelions are too much of a diuretic for my preference btw, but good when feeling a vitamin deficiency.

Have the five C's. Cutting tool, Combustion Device, Cover, Container, Cordage. You can get that stuff in your pockets. Have backups for that in the bag, plus anything you need for what you're expecting, in your area, at the present time. Keep the whole thing under 35 pounds, under 25 if possible. And TRAIN WITH IT! Seriously, take it out on a long weekend and do a survival trip. Three days with a goal of moving 12 miles (20 km) a day on foot and surviving on only what you're carrying. It will make you adjust your gear. Do it in summer and in winter because you'll need different things. And keep in mind that you are not likely to survive indefinitely out of it. It's a temporary set of tools to get you from Ground Zero to your place of refuge. Which means you need a place of refuge. If you're jumping out the side door with nowhere to go then your bug out bag just extends your survivability a week or two longer than everyone else.

Hello Bjorn, The reality is this: It is to late for many, for many will do nothing. Which is why we are in the condition we are in today. Others may try and lack the skills or discipline to survive. Very few will actually survive what is to come. The question is what do the survivors have to look forward to? No one knows... Live for the day, live with Honor, live with graditude, except responsibility for your actions. Fear no thing including death.

Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. It is not enough to merely survive, as many are now doing, but they have no knowledge of true life. It is better to have a life that is short but meaningful than a long and empty existence. Materialism, hedonism, collectivism, and sometimes even extreme individualism are paths to an empty existence. None of the current events indicate a near future of hopefulness: only increased despotism and repression. But peace and freedom can still be found, and even by more people than we might suppose. The evil of our day is providing motivation for people to look where hitherto they have been unwilling.

Suggestion: For a "shtf" scenario, everyone should learn how to make and cook food from easily available sources. I am not talking about hunting, but just simple foodstuffs like potato, vegetables, meat etc. Those "just add boiled water"-type meals will be gone in a week. Ordinary foodstuffs are always available for a long time, since farmers and factories are producing them in big quantities. Of course those just add water-type meals are good if you are in a hurry and don't have a pot with you.

After having used the pump water filters and comparing them to other types, I would recommend a gravity filter. You can do a fair amount of water in a short time and minimal effort. As a spiritual person I actually practice praying & keeping a strong connection with God everyday, it's the only thing that helps me cope with PTSD. I also believe, without a doubt, in an eternal afterlife, which will begin with our 'resurrection on judgement day, where justice or compensation will be served for our choices or sufferings. But that certainly doesn't mean one should neglect 'staying strong till the last moment' in this life.(...so i'm not exactly a good example in that...although i really fight everyday in persevering somehow with the little that is left of me) Some are stronger than others, and some can endure more than others. What matters in the end, is that we all try to live in peace & harmony, despite our different beliefs. We are all brothers & sisters in humanity going through this journey of life together. Great tip for training: I put on my 70ltr backpack containing 16 plastic bottles refilled with water and just move around for an hour. Great back work out. I use a catapult with steel bbs instead of snares as I don’t have the knowledge to use them humanely. At least in Scotland we don’t have to worry about water, if you’re out just wait 10 mins till it rains!

Thank you for not talking about Covid and Covid related issues. In North America, A bug-Out-Bag is what you call a grab-bag. I carry a Hawk (Tomahawk) instead of an Axe. Why? If you break the handle, it can be replaced in the field. If you lose your knife, the head of the hawk can be use it as an Ulu knife. The head of the axe is made of Carbon Steel, it can be used as Flint And Steel. You have an extra fire making device. I carry a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) the Huntsman model. Why? It has a strong saw and a strong pair of scissors and Bottle screwcork. A screwcork can be used to cut branches or fruits that out of reach. Simply screw your knife to a long pole. I could replace the toothpick with a Firefly Ferro Rod and tinder. If you lose all your gears, you won't lose your fire making power. It's not the "Apocalypse" or the "Collapse of Civilization" that we need to worry about but Natural Disasters. Earthquake, Wildfires, Hurricanes, tornadoes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis, Pandemics. these are the ones that people should worry the most about. I agree your Bug-Out-Bag should reflect of where you live.

I've yet to read it I admit, but one thing I share with others is the need for meekness. I call it the forgotten manskill. Meekness is not weakness; it is the sheathed sword by the side of a man who knows how to use it, but keeps himself restrained. This does not mean that the time of restraint goes on unconditionally. The time for drawing swords may be closer at hand than many of us would like.

To me a bug out bag is what you take if you think you will be outside of your house for around 72 hours. As a "student" of Creek Stewart and subscriber to his Apocabox service I have learned that the bag is only a part of the equation. If you wear cargo pants or scrubs a lot you can have a few survival items on you. I also have a bug out vest that is a fishing vest filled with survival items. My vehicle has a tool box with a few tools and mostly survival items, and behind the back seat I carry food, shelter, extra bags, extra weapons, water, water filters, cooking gear and first aid. I also carry several tarps in my vehicle. Among my bugout bag books I have three for survival and Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series. The house itself has a room that is cool and dry with six months of food and water and various survival tools.

I’m a lifer for the forest. Here’s the thing about that bug out bag. The gear may have to save your life. That gear may have to last forever. I buy cheap ass camping gear all the time. Replace it every cpl years. That’s not the gear I’ll rely on if it becomes a survival issue. My gear varies from my canoe to the kayak, to the back back. In reality . I believe I would need some sort of cart, wagon or something or order actually have a long term on the move survival. Homeless shopping cart style j/k.

@@jimmyboynottknown7713 I guess you can plan on running forever. Listen I’m just a guy who spends a lot of time out there. 3 months unsupported on the Missouri River last year. Took the big ass canoe. It sure is nice to have a screen tent packed. Weeks of Nats and mosquitoes eating you alive, second gallon of deet. Sure I didn’t need it. But it’ll save your mind. I took 350 pounds of gear and food. Traveled 1900 miles. Nobody could of found or surrounded me. And I had no need to return home ever really. Half the US can access the Mississippi River systems, and travel the length and breath of the states. Same goes for Canada. There’s a 70 year old paddled and portages the entire width of Canada 3 times now. I’m not downing bug out bags. I have one all packed, so I can walk away. I how ever live in the middle of nowhere. Sad truth is. If you cannot foresee the right time, and not be the crazy guy who bailed for no reason. Your likely screwed in the long run. Few will make out of those cities. Fewer will go more than a hundred miles without tragedy striking. I’ll be in the sad spot of fending for food where the tourists come to hunt. It’ll be as bad as any horror movie. Did you ever watch that series alone. Giving a nice gear list, and still left wanting for the long term. Half get broken mentally in the first week. Down to 3,4 in a month. Little bag is good for emergencies. If your forced to survive out there or at home with no power , no food, no water, and two hook and a line. You won’t live long.

@@danielbast352 I totally agree with you. Bug out bag is a start. To survive long term you need to be ready mentally and phisically. You need good quality gear and with more than just cooking. In my opinion and my experiance 95% of bug out ppl wont make a month. They all think that its like camping. No is not. Five or more lighters, Bics, in two layers of ziplocks. a magnesium fire starter( which saved my bacon once when pack was submerged and despite ziplocks lighters all got wet.)Extra bullets. Bugdope. A headnet. Thin poly gloves. Fishing hooks and line. a plumbers candle. a military surplus wool blanket and a ten by twelve tarp. A lot of ziplock bags and a lot of grocery t-shirt bags. Two pair extra socks. Pair of twelve power mini binoculars. "Oregon line," which is strong poly line about 80 lbs. A section of 50 or so feet of rope(mainly for holding up the legs of a moose or caribou while skinning.) Good enough for thirty years in Alaska. Still have it out hanging in the shed.

The only thing I would add would be a Kindle reading tablet and a folding solar charger. You can load the Kindle up with pleasure reading as well as reference materials, and you can charge it up with the solar panel. Plus, you can use the solar panel to charge your flashlight, radio, GPS, and cell phone. These things will add less than 2 pounds to your bag and they could be invaluable in a bugout situation.

The humble practicality of your lessons : very relatable! Mr. Bjorn, ensure with consideration to always prep 3 of everything Security through redundancy Split and pack at 3's of everything Maybe you have to delve into one stash as you find yourself out of money Or maybe because you took heed and prepared back in multiple places, one or 2 of the 3 is compromised for any reason you can't get to Think long term dry storage foods to store back with the 4 grains corn, wheat, rice, and beans. Atop canned food from the store (when can) Get supplies to and learn how to can vegetable and meats Fishing and hunting without gardening is not sustainable for long term Least you do garden and fish with the average burn off rate for calleries in a us military aged male (males require the most calories : at 3200 calories a day not mentioning the other needs like meats for vitamins and *edit* - proteins - and veggies for minerals) You basis should have atleast for every adult sized 18 - 35 year old male in your house hold set back at 700 pounds of grains divided by the 4 groups (mentioned above) for 1 years long term sustainment
