Tal, just a suggestion since your cute home is already livable…..you may want to plant lemongrass and basil within your premises (just beside or close to the perimeter fences of your house) as these are snake repellants to protect your chickens. Besides these are great herbs used in cooking so that would make your household self sufficient in such herbs.
