Build a cedar Stand Up Paddleboard from scratch

3 жыл бұрынSo, you want to build a paddleboard like this? All you need is a sheet of ⅜ plywood, about 6 cedar 2x6s (preferably without knots) ,woodglue, small breather vent, fins, some fiberglass + resin, and deck grips.

Glad you liked the video Dale! I hope you give it a try. The tools help but the board can definitely be built with less (or more😆) tools than i used. It's a fun toy to take out on the lake and it's even better enjoying something you've made. Thanks for the comments. 👍

The most unconventional part of the build was how often you had your pants inside your boots... when I do that woodworking I end up with a pound of sawdust in my socks 😄 Looks like a fun project

Great job on the board. I appreciate you showing all the steps. How did you keep the epoxy from dripping on the sides when you glassed it?

Thanks for liking my video! 🙂 I kept on wiping the drips on the resin until it stiffened up enough. Any runs were sanded down after. So far, getting a glossy smooth finish isn't my strong point.

Very nice board and video! How does it track? (With the fins on). Just wondering if after using it you are thinking about a keel. I am thinking about building one since the junk plastic one I have tracks poorly even with fins. Again very nice!

It tracks very nicely actually. Three fins are plenty, I've thought of removing one to make it easier to turn. With a little bit of paddle angle i can paddle straight without switching from side to side. I hope you give it a try! It's a great learning experience to build one. I'm planning to build another one sometime but a little shorter. Probably 8 or 9 ft instead of 10 ft.

Thank you! Yes, just regular 3/8 plywood. It makes it simple and inexpensive for building, then there is no need for a special table to prop it up (it holds its own weight up and doesn't flop around like thinner ply).

Can I use regular plywood for the bones? I’ve got plans from Jarvis but I can’t find marine grade ply anywhere.

Yeah for sure! I used regular ply and it works fine. If you're worried about it you could get treated plywood.

Thanks, yeah i just built it without a plan. I watched some other youtubers building surfboards and such but that's about it. I hope you build one , it's a fun project.

@@FlavioRicardoDesign a couple tips and things i would change on the next one are this: make the back end a little wider, it has a small sweet spot for balance from the front to back. The second would be to put two air vents in, just in case water gets inside so you can pressurize the inside with one vent on an air hose and blow the water out through the second vent.

It's 10ft long with ribs every 8inches. 2" on each end with a 6" belly. 32" wide at the middle. I don't have specific measurements for each part.

It was a spar urethane to keep it from yellowing.

Hey thanks, it weighs around 38 lbs. It's definitely on the heavier side of the paddleboard spectrum. But I've found the only inconvenience is when I'm carrying to the lake. Once it's in the water, the weight makes it really stable and i prefer it over a lighter one.

I cheaped out and didnt buy a kit. I started with my length and width and thickness and just guessed. Worked out, i guess I'm lucky.

I bent a thin piece of wood to get the curvature, and took my measurements off of that.

How did you make your patterns for each batten?

I roughly drew out the size of paddleboard on a piece of wood and took measurements from that. Once i had the width of the ribs I used a curved template to mark the top corners so that they were all the same curvature.

Hey, Nivaldo from Brazil! I'm glad you are interested in making a paddleboard. Unfortunately I don't have a plan to follow, I built this with just a couple rough measurements in mind. This is about 10 ft long with the ribs spaced apart every 8 inches, the widest ribs are about 30 inches wide and 6" deep. Hope this helps.

Yup, gorilla glue to fill any larger gaps in the wood.

Im pretty sure you used the gorilla glue the wrong way. Regular wood glue would have worked when glueing up the frame. Gorilla glue needs water to activate.

Thanks for the tip, i didn't know that about gorilla glue. I used gorilla glue because it foams up and fills gaps a little better.

@@buildsomethingawesome gorilla glue will obtain all the water it needs to activate from the atmosphere. It just may take longer than had you dampened the wood prior to gluing. What plans did you use?

@@johnfurr8779 that makes sense. The gorilla glue seemed to work fine. As far as plans go, i just winged it on this one and hoped for the best. Aimed for a 10 ft board and whatever felt right.

11:43. It's glued, i just didn't video every strip getting glued.😆 Sometimes people will use staples to hold them in place till the glue dries and then pull the staples. I might try that next time.
