(IT looks a lot better!)
In this video, we build our own Magicband reader just like the ones at Disney World. Using just a few electronic parts such a Raspberry Pi , a RFID/NFC reader and a 3D printer, you can put all those Magicbands you have laying around the house to some fun use. With a few changes to the python code, it can play different sounds or display different colors based on the unique id of each magic band. What do you think of this build? Let us know in the comments below if you plan to build it. We will see you on the next build.

very cool. I was just in the process of doing something similar myself... wanted to build mine as a doorbell, but using an arduino nano rather than a raspi (need it to be battery powered, using a ultra lower power timer circuit and need a quick boot time). You had way better success with your inserts than I did, for some reason when printed I'd always get a variance in size, so gave up and used hot glue. For testing purposes I also used strip, but going to neopixel rings (when they finally arrive from China). Had to comment when saw you did something similar.
@foolishmortalbuilders1462

Doorbell. I like that idea. Can't you just pick up the power from your existing doorbell (24v I think) and step it down to what you need? I tried the neopixel rings first, but I liked the way the strips lit up the ring. Let me know how your version turns out.

Well, this is literally the coolest thing ever.. i have all my parts ordered and am wanting to start thr prints tonight.. what did you use for supports when printing? Ive never really printed anything in a spherical shape. Just applying base supports through cura is making each quarter about a 23 hour print... that sound aboit right? Or are you somehoe positioning this with less supports? Also, what was the reason in doing it in quarters? I was debating combining them into 2 halves to recude the visible lines where they connect. Thoughts? Thanks again for the amazing work into this.
@foolishmortalbuilders1462
@foolishmortalbuilders1462 4 жыл бұрын
I did it in quarters so it would fit on my 3d printer. You might need to reposition the parts so the flat part of the sphere (where they connect) is on the print bed. If you got the print space, you can definitely combine them into two halves instead.

Why did you not decide to run the PI and LED's off of the same power supply with both of them being 5V? This seems like it would simplify this a lot and save cost. For anyone finally getting around to trying this.... make sure you are using the: Raspberry Pi OS Lite (Legacy) Release date: December 2nd 2021 Kernel version: 5.10 Follow the video to install and gain SSH access. Once you are able to SSH in, immediately run raspi-config, get into the advanced section - audio and change to HDMI. Then continue following the video. If raspi-config doesn't show you a HDMI option you installed the wrong version, raspberry has made a change in the latest OS, that took me and Foolish a bit to figure out before Xmas. Also for sounds, make sure you put them in the /home/pi/ directory, not sure if I missed it in the video. PS - want to thank Foolish for taking the time to go through my setup and help sort out what was going on with the new OS not working.

The ring is for joining the front half of the sphere to the back half. I glued 1/2 of the ring to the front sphere and I used screws to attach the back half of the sphere to the ring. Correct, I've tried 2 similar designs and gave up in the end and ordered the SCL3711. I've also had a little play with the python script with a friend (mostly him to if i'm honest), so now it searches a directory on the pi containing the wav files, and picks one at random to play. It also checks the length of the sound file and continues to keep the led's illuminated until the end of the file. Pretty neat :)

Can we define the same band more than once for multiple sounds?

@@cwizardtx It could be done by changing the sounds: "" variable to an array definition 'sounds' : ['magicband_fastpass.mp3', 'x2.mp3'. 'x3.mp3'] and then change the sound variable to be a randomized selection from that array..... If I get a change this week, I'll update the code to support that.

Im trying to replicate this....I am ssh to the pi and am trying the tar xf magicband_dist.tar tar: magicband_dist.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I get the above error, not sure what Im doing wrong. Maybe I did not place the files from GitHub correctly?

When you click the green clone button from github and then click "Download ZIP", you will actually get a file called magicbandreader-master.zip. This is the file you should transfer, in the video I used the tar as that's what I had at the time of filming. SCP this file over to the pi and run "unzip magicbandreader-master.zip" instead of "tar xf" command. OR you can unzip on your computer and SCP each of the files individually over to the pi. Hope that helps.

@@foolishmortalbuilders1462 Thanks for responding, unfortetly still stuck. Im not familiar with SCP so I simply put the sd card into my mac and copied the .zip over, when it still fails to extract, I then just extracted it on my mac and copied files to sd card but then still install does not work. pi@raspberrypi:~ $ unzip magicbandreader-master.zip unzip: cannot find or open magicbandreader-master.zip, magicbandreader-master.zip.zip or magicbandreader-master.zip.ZIP. pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo sh install.sh sh: 0: Can't open install.sh pi@raspberrypi:~ $

Don't need SPI when you can just use another GPIO port, neopixels work with PIO10, GPIO12, GPIO18 or GPIO21 but 18 is the standard. No need to over complicate it.
