A week ago, I would have completely agreed with you about wood posts in the ground. I just pulled 18 used power posts that were buried 30" in the ground. Some of them were held in place with tamped dirt, and some had a 3" collar of concrete. The concrete posts had approx 1/2" per side of rot and were very hard the pull out. The ones that were in dirt had 3" per side of rot. The only thing I can't confirm is if they were installed at the same time.

If you do use cedar posts, there are several things you can do to prevent them from rotting: coat them in a wood preservative, slope concrete away from post, caulk where concrete meets post, and ensure there is drainage below the concrete.

Well that stinks. Were you using PostMasters or a different brand? Were you spaced 8-feet apart or less? PostMasters are rated for 70-mph winds. To be fair, I've seen 4x4's snap like tooth picks in a wind storm. The choice is yours on what post to use. If we install in a known windy area that could have an effect on the integrity of the post, we will consider shrinking the post spacing, but we haven't seen one fail yet.

Location is slightly inland of NC Coast(Jacksonville). Would you recommend them for sandy soil? I plan on 4'+ deep and 6' centers(pounded, not driven unless you say otherwise). Your fence challenges are perfect for the jobsite breaks. Fun, educational and entertaining. Thanks! -Brian

I'm building one this weekend using corrugated steel roofing. I may be able to make a video. If I don't, it's pretty straightforward. Instead of using pickets or wood planks, use the metal roofing cut at 6 ft. Each section would consist of 4- 6 ft tall panels. Touch it up and make it look nice with anything else you want.

It depends on what the customer wants, but typically we follow the roll of the ground but still try to smooth it out. So each post inserted roughly the same distance, but adjusted a little to smooth out the rolls.

I live in eastern Washington where the wind blows all the time. Wood posts here always rot right at the ground and then the wood posts break. People that will argue against the cost of the steel, that is short sighted thinking. Wood pists might last 10 years, MAYBE 20 if treated with roofing tar well above the soil line .... But steel posts will last for generations when done right. The fence at my parents house was put in with steel posts bedded in concrete back in the 80s. The posts are fine, but some sections and rails of the fence had to be replaced after being damaged in a wind storm. That's 40 years and counting. Well worth the cost.

Steel doesn't rot so how can wood compare?
@KB-ie7jr
@KB-ie7jr 10 ай бұрын
Saying wood eventually rots is like saying steel eventually rusts. Galvanized, Hot-Dipped, even Stainless eventually rusts, but there's kind of an important detail about pressure treated lumber that people seem to be missing here... Alot of the pressure treated lumber that's sold in the US is actually covered by a lifetime warranty against rot, fungal decay, and termite attack. Basically the only thing that voids the warranty is not going back to seal your cuts. So don't forget to seal your end cuts and you're set for life!! So I guess maybe that's one way that wood compares to steel?
@lHurtYourFeeIings
@lHurtYourFeeIings 10 ай бұрын
@@KB-ie7jr "set for life"? I don't know man. I just bought a house and all the fence pole were rotten from the base. I checked Google map and compared the history, the poles were installed around 15 years ago, all rotten and falling where the wood meets surface level, the wood Inside the dirt were all fine. Now about "life time warranty", what life time warranty when you don't even see a product label on it after 15 years? Wood is wood how are you going to know what brand it was. LOL
@KB-ie7jr
@KB-ie7jr 10 ай бұрын
@@lHurtYourFeeIings I honestly can't tell if you're trying to make a case against the lifetime warranty being a thing or if you're just sharing anecdotal stories instead. I'll respond to both I guess. So congrats on the new house purchase and product warranties in general don't transfer along with the re-sale, they only apply to the original owner but you can always check. Every piece of lumber is required to have a grade stamp which also includes the mill or manufacturer identification as well, so that's how you know what "brand" it was. And even if you didn't, just about every warranty claims process anywhere requires you to have the original purchase receipt. Nobody expects the product label to still be on after 15 years. I mean you don't keep the barcode labels on all the items you buy and still wrapped in cellophane right? And finally, I'm not exactly sure what you were getting at with the last coments but the lifetime warranty is still possible without a product label and wood can still rot when it has a lifetime warranty, these things aren't mutually exclusive. LOL

Well… 8 ft between vertical metal poles is a long way for a fence plank that is .5” thk. Notice on the video there is a ripped 2x4 at 4’ to tie the planks. And it does not anchor into the ground. not good enough. All the planks will warp together. Not a straight fence in my opinion. Good try but a revision is required to this idea. I’m working on something myself.

We ship to folks who can't get them in their local area (and we have to pay to ship them in, and then out again). If you can find them in your local area you can save considerably. Why not try seeing if your local tool shop has a driver for rent? Then you don't have to buy it at all.

😏 Yes, unfortunately we can't offer steel at the same prices we can offer wood. It's a premium product designed to simply life after install. It's all we use--but we do understand it can't be everybody's choice.

Source them locally--you can get them much cheaper. We sell them to folks who can't find them in their area. It stings when we have to ship them in and then ship them out again. Steel doesn't ship cheap.
