Hey guys, I'm back with a video on how to build a handicap ramp over some existing stairs. In this case a friend needed a ramp with handrails in order to get into her house. So, We decided what better way to help her out then to build a accessible ramp for her to access the door to her home with ease. Here's the video, and thanks for watching. Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't already, just click on the icon in the bottom right, and if you liked the video please click on the thumbs up. Thanks.
I would also like to give a shout out to 84 lumber for helping get the wood supplies for the build, my dad for his help, and all my friends that donated to make this build so important for someone who needs it.
Follow me on social media and check out my website for more videos and info.

A private ramp does not have to meet the 1/12 ratio. It can be as steep as 1/6.

First off thank you for the comments everyone. I just want to clarify a few things. I apologize for using the title of handicap ramp as I am aware that this is not 1/12 pitch. The premise for the project was simply to give her much easier access in walking up to the door as she was very sick and could not navigate stairs. The idea of the video was more or less just a quick build ramp to ease the height increase and I just wanted to show how to whip up a ramp that would be sturdy and hold the test of time just fine. Also I know a lot of you commented on the door and I did address some of you. The storm door frame was removed so that it wouldn't be in the way and the wood entry door opens in and out of the way. I hope I could at least provide viewers with at least some pointers and tips on building any kind of ramp and thank you all for the comments and watching.

Good point James. The storm door did in fact swing out and the wrong direction so I had to remove that. The wood door swings in and was in the perfect direction so it all worked out. If they do want to add a storm door we can just put on a new one that swings the right way, not a big deal

Nice video. Thanks. Just thought that the ramp should have been off the other side of the stairs and done at a 90 degree from a platform/landing. A landing 1/2 or 1/3 of the way up might be beneficial for someone who has difficulty walking a distance. Could have extended it out to keep a walkable pitch. Also, the storm door could have remained. Granted the chosen location is closer to the garage if the current owner still drives. Future owner wont be able to utilize the second garage stall.

Nice ramp but it looks way too steep. An ADA ramp is for every inch you rise you need 1 foot out. This would mean that you really needed to go down and turn with a level landing. The ramp needs to be a minim of 36 inches wide and if I was you I would of built the ramp all the way out to the original railing. It looks like you sort of blocked off that big pad of driveway on the other side of the ramp plus if a vehicle was to want to park in that garage that makes that more difficult without someone not hitting the end of the ramp. Since that front porch had two sets of steps I would of built the ramp off the other set of steps and wrapped the ramp around the front of the porch and but some flowers or a water feature between the original porch and the ramp leading to the edge of the driveway. On the porch level it looked like a drop off between the new platform and the original railing. If a wheelchair ever needed to get in the front door and it turned the caster wheels have a good chance to go off between the railing and the platform. That extra space is so important especially when making that turn.
@tommyboydiy1484
@tommyboydiy1484 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam. I am aware that it is not a true ADA ramp. It was only a temporary ramp made to make the angle low enough for the owner to be able to walk up into the house because she could not use steps. The video was meant to show the steps and ways I used to make a nice sturdy ramp. Thanks for watching

@@tommyboydiy1484 You built a nice ramp for the space you had and the need you had. I learned and re-learned some things. But, viewers might think this is a good ramp for general use and it's too steep. What can you use to make the ramp slip-proof for someone who walks up and down and does not use a wheelchair?

I ended up buying a roll of grip tape on Amazon. Which actually had reflective material as well for night time. Worked great. www.amazon.com/dp/B07NWHB9F2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_24BF5A45D6QJCDASYJE3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Enjoyed vid but a question. Did you have the porch end of the joist already cut when you used the level to cut the ground end of the joist? Thanks
@tommyboydiy1484
@tommyboydiy1484 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, so the easiest way was to lay the joist across the top of your stairs to where it meets the ground. Then with a speed square you can draw the notch to match the step and then draw a line at the bottom near the ground perpendicular to the ground.

@@tommyboydiy1484 I didn't see you use a speed square just a 4 ft level. Wish you would show the whole process as I can't wrap my mind around what you were doing. Thanks

I know this is old video so may not be active anymore but how did you figure the angle to cut on the trusses that in contact to the platform. I don’t see that you showed that. Thanks for the video

@tommyboydiy1484 5 ай бұрын
Honestly I used the 20 foot joist and layed it on the step and just marked the bottom with a straight edge at that angle. A string line would be another option, if you went from top of step to ground with the line you could measure the angle

Tommy, did you attach the 4x4 post to the concrete? Hwo did you get the angle for the birds mouth and top angle?
@tommyboydiy1484
@tommyboydiy1484 Жыл бұрын
I didn't attach to concrete only because it was a temporary ramp. You could easily use galvanized 4x4 brackets though if you needed to. The top angle can be calculated with a framing square once you know the rise over run

Imagine you switched the door swing. A lot of the how to vids show the ramp, but not an outside rail. Heard one guy say, it wasn't code, wasn't needed. It was only two feet. Wheelchair drop on yiu from two feet? Oh, so hanging on to vinyl shingles is what you have in mind? Must have handrails, both sides. My county requires an inside rail as you have. Can't grip that top plate, use an inside handrail. Make something out of special wood, shrub or tree trimmings, strip the bark, bleach, sand, stain. Also, county requirement is a landing every 10 feet, wide enough to turnaround for a wheelchair. Instead of balustrades ....use rebar. Super cheap, easy to work with, takes spray paint. Rebar gives an airy look, all that done in wood is unattractive and too much maintenance. Way easier to install....drill holes, slide rebar through. Adhere to the spacing as building code would have it. We're new to all of this. Decks haven't been around more than 40 years probably. We need to play catch up, and bring everyone along. Builders should use ramps in home design. All homes should have a pass through for unloading groceries. Good job, thanks for posting. Use a slow-closer on the door. Difference is night and day. Expensive to buy, but a pleasure everyday, not being pushed with a load in your hands. Quiet and automatic closure, not awkward. .

It's going to vary depending on how long and high but I used three 20 foot 2x6's for the lengths. Then topped it with 1x6 deck boards cut to width

what's the grade? How do i figure the angle of the 2"x 6" at the top?
@tommyboydiy1484
@tommyboydiy1484 3 жыл бұрын
You would calculate the rise over run of the height of your stairs from the ground where it rests. For instance if your ramp is 16' long and 4 foot high is your steps then every foot of ramp rises three inches. That's a 3/12 pitch. If you use a carpenters square and find 3/12 pitch on it it with show you where to mark the angle

Great video but one flaw. Not cutting you down just some constructive awareness. Once the wheel chair is at the top how do you open the screen door without interference? Looks like the wheel chair and screen door will clash.

good video not quite done yet but I'd like to point out that the screws used for the Samson ties for the ramp risers but not just screws they're structural screws you should have pointed that out because will not pass code if you just use regular screws because the sheer value not enough with regular deck screws or wood screws.

I was going to say it's not in compliance because on a 30 ft span you can't go no more than 30 in high at a time where you have to build landings you have to do a step up or a turnaround instead of coming all the way out in that driveway you could have came out to the side and went down had a longer run less of an incline

Like I mentioned to someone else the cost depends on how long it needs to be. If it needs to go down and back because of the height drop. I believe the parts cost on mine was around $500. It took my dad and I the day and two hours in the morning to finish up.
