Beware. Unless the EMP is originating in somewhere like Florida and this box is in somewhere like Alaska, it wont be any good for your consumer IT equipment. Whist the MIL-STD-188-125 spec has a 20db safety margin (60db + 20db = 80db), this is considered the ‘minimum’ for military spec and other commercial equipment which is designed to be tolerant to 200 v/m or above. Consumer IT is very seldom better than 10 v/m. Also, with the Earth’s weakening magnetic field, it is expected that future major solar flares will have energies which far exceed the MIL-STD-188-125 spec (something which the US military is still well behind on for mitigating in it’s field equipment) . So a thick and conductive metal enclosure is a must for efficacious prepping and ideally stored below ground. I think that this serious limitation should have been pointed out in this (and other similar KZfaq) videos on this topic.

Prefer an aluminum NEMA electrical box. They can be ordered with conductive gaskets that are very effective in providing a decent contact between the lid and container. You will have to place an insulating layer on the inside of the container so equipment cannot contact the metal case. You must also ground the cabinet with a grounding cable of at least number six high strand count cable that is used for high end car stereo installations. The ground cable should be kept as short and straight as possible to a decent ground rod at least 6 to 8 feet long. Some have tried to ground the containers to water lines however in todays modern homes the water main line coming into the home most often is made of plastic. Will not work. Some people will drill a hole through the concrete floor in their basement in an area away from any drain lines exiting the home. One must also keep the ground stake about 12 inches out from the wall to avoid hitting the foundation and drain tile that is placed under the floor around the perimeter of the basement. They also place the box about 2-3 feet above the floor on a shelf. As you drive the ground rod into the earth around the last 8” it’s a good idea to use a mould resistant silicone sealant around the rod and a 4” section around the rod to seal it from any moisture coming up from the hole.

This is the best faraday box I've seen...thanks! So if i build it the way you presented, I can put the electronics inside without having an additional internal box? Wouldn't the EMP charge hit the faraday material and damage items that were in contact with it?
@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the video, Gary! Thanks for watching. It is best if it's grounded, so you could always attach a conductive item (like a stainless nail) through the box and run it to ground. You could also add a thin layer of non-conductive material on the inside, such as cloth. Generally speaking, the charge from the EMP should circulate through the outside of the material (if it is in fact a full faraday cage) and not penetrate inside with enough power to create damaging effects on the electronics. This would be the point of the faraday cage. It's obviously hard to test these effects in the real world (we do actually perform lab testing to MIL STD 188-125 for HEMP on our materials and products), so many people in the community just take the approach of doing as much work as they can to protect their items within reason. So, all that to say, if you want to ground it and insulate, do it! Haha, hope that helps.

I was getting ready to order some of this material to make a cage for a solar generator but decided to watch this first. Now, I am really a bit confused. I thought that the items placed inside the cage/box needed to be shielded from direct contact with the shielding material. My plan was to protect the material with a bit of cardboard cushioning and sit the generator on the cardboard. Reading another comment and your response, it sounds like whatever you put in needs to be in contact with the shielding material. Is that correct?

Absolutely. You can use any material to create a faraday enclosure/box/cage. As long as you use the correct amount of faraday fabric and layer it so that it remains touching and conductive throughout the structure, your design should block signal.

Could a prefab metal tool chest be converted to a faraday cage? Seems like the EMP gasket material would be needed and a liner, but overall price seems like it would be less than fabric for the same storage capacity on wood?

Yes you can certainly take any box and line it with faraday fabric including a metal tool chest! Just make sure you place the gaskets on the edges correctly so that they are conductively touching one another and with the lined fabric when closing, otherwise, the box won't work.

So is it possible to build a faraday box whereby you can put a small generator within it and still be able to run the generator while protecting it from EMPs at the same time? Didn’t know if that is possible and how you could get around the fact of needing an exhaust opening and an air intake opening as well.
@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can definitely build a faraday box that has filters for running/charging generators and vents for allowing exhaust to circulate in and out of the box, all while protecting against EMPs. You must use specific faraday EMP blocking filters and vents to keep shielding conductivity within the box. Here is a video on how to install a filter for your faraday cage: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/heBloM5o2tC0e5s.html and here is a video on how to install a vent into your faraday cage: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftKaltCTvaipf4k.html

Big issue - the materials list is flawed. It specifies "6 yards" of the fabric, but the website only sells fabric in in precut lengths measured in feet and inches and marketed with names that provide no real help - such as pro construction kit, pro construction kit 20, etc. I called to ask which I should order and customer service staff didn't know either and suggested I might want to order the next size larger fabric "just in case) - which is a whopping $290 dollars more then the size below! Discouraging when trying to order and have no idea what to get. Otherwise a cool project.

Hi, you used Google App if I'm correct.? When you pulled the phone out of the Faraday box the app was still running? Correct me if I'm wrong, how would the app still be running if there phone shut down? Doesn't that mean that all apps can only be running if the phone is still getting signal?
@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, apps can run inside the box, however, if they need a wifi or cell connection to function, they will not operate because cell and wifi signals will be blocked from your device. Our app is available to download off of google or apple, however, it does not use internet connection once it is in use and stored inside the faraday cage. What our app tests for is when cell and wifi signals are lost on your device, it records the process without using any outside source.

Yes you can! As long as your box is still conductively made with faraday fabric and your devices are 100% enclosed within the layers when stored inside the cage, you can put anything up against the fabric to protect it. Make sure once you seal the box that the closure section is also conductive and there is no barrier in between the layers of closing fabric.

Isn't the exterior of a faraday box supposed to be conductive, and the interior insulated (i.e. non-conductive)?
@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! It is very possible to reverse the conductive area to the exterior rather than interior. It works both ways and as long as you have designed a conductive area with faraday fabric and have made the exterior fully covered and conductive when you close the box, you can store your devices inside and signals should be blocked. Designing and lining the interior with faraday fabric to be conductive allows you to use other material like leather, paint, etc. for the outside style of the box/enclosure and will also reduce tear and wear that lining the exterior of the box could experience. Let us know if this answered your question!

Why can't you use glue instead of Staples and plastic drywall bead instead of metal?
@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent. The reason we recommend not using any form of adhesive other than faraday tape or other faraday adhesives is because in order for the box to block 100% of all signals, it has to be a fully conductive enclosure built with faraday materials. The material is made out of a copper and nickel compound that is conductive when it touches other pieces coated in that material. If you use glue or other non-faraday adhesives, signals will be able to pass through them and you will have signal leakage in your cage.

We've definitely had lots of discussion regarding this question. The simplified answer is that some of our customers concerned about EMFs have consistently reached out to us asking how to shield your router when it's not being used. This is a solution for how they can shield EMFs coming from their router without having to turn off their router and go through the rebooting process every time.

@missiondarkness
@missiondarkness 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I could have wrapped the individual panels with fabric before assembling the box, and that could have worked well for this style of enclosure (though it’s still best to tape the seams). The reason I lined it is to show how that process works, as many people have much larger enclosures like sheds. The concept of wrapping around corners takes a bit of technique that I tried to demonstrate on a smaller scale. Thanks for commenting!

There are not many ways to show how signals are blocked from your device because signals are not visible. Our app records if cell/wifi connection is lost, therefore showing how the faraday blocks signals from your device once sealed up. Another way to test if signals are blocked is to video record your phone screen and see it loose connection to wifi/cell. You can also test this method out by making a call to someone who has their phone stored inside the cage, it won't go through.

Nest your devices with a few layers of faraday cages. But reality is that your stuff will fry. 🤷‍♀️ Weakened and weakening magnetic field now allows much more solar radiation and cosmic rays through to us. Yay cancer! 😅 So a foreign or domestic EMP, could possibly be defensible. But a solar CME or worse another micro-nova will fry everything regardless of faraday cages. The amount of energy melt s surface level conductive metals through induction. Good news is that we won’t be around either. Forecast is mid 2040 for cataclysmic solar events…if we don’t nuke ourselves 1st. ☠️ 😅
