Build a skating rink using PVC pipes

The easiest and best way I've found to build a backyard skating rink. I use 4" PVC pipe and a 6 mil liner...a little bit of foam used to make the pipes level and all that's required is water and some cold weather. One of the things I like about this technique is that after a few snowfalls you don't even see the structure and it just looks like a natural rink in your yard.
This rink is 28' x 58' and the liner I purchased is 32' x 65' ... if I'm off by a foot or two on the rink dimensions it is because I am going by memory and I've been using the same pipes since my first time using this technique (more than 10 years ago).
I wish I could re-use the liner but I tried that twice and it ended up with more headaches and work than I wanted. I guess you need to balance the cost/waste of a new liner vs the wasted water and time dealing with (trying to patch) a leaky liner. I do end up using the old liner in various ways throughout the summer (as drop cloth etc).

It's my first time building a rink and thought about using PVC pipe....then i found your video, which is excellent. Going to be getting rain later this week, then cold temps, so I hope to have a rink by Christmas! Thanks for sharing.

Awsome building my friend. So great you make this rink. When we were kids we went to a little pond not far from our house. Cumminty would all get together. They would make an old fashion fire in a barrel. Great memories you brought to me. Good sixty years ago lol. Step 10 your reward ☺️ super finish. God bless 🙏 stay safe hugs ❤️ Merry Christmas 🎄

I grew up within walking distance of the Ottawa river and I remember bringing shovels down and clearing off an area and playing hockey there.

So do you have a nominal four inch slab of ice? That sure is cool. That white stuff appears to keep the dog walkers out of your way. How about a landing across the ice. Hmmm.

Just subscribed based on this video alone. Q: How do you keep your hands warm enough to fly so smoothly in the cold? Q2: Ever considered converting a Roomba to a Zamboni to resurface your rink? Merry Christmas.

I usually only fly one pack at a time in the winter so the flights are less than 5 minutes. Unless it's really cold it isn't too bad on the hands (noticeable but not painful). When I fly fixed wing in cold weather my fingers ache like crazy by the end of the flight. I'd never thought of using a robot vacuum. I doubt the water reservoir on those that support mopping would be large enough to do the whole thing in one go...but using open source robot vacuum software to control a DIY unit is a very interesting concept. I wonder if either thing has been tried? Merry Christmas and thanks for watching!

Do you use stakes to keep the sides from bowing out? Looks awesome!

No. I've used tires, logs, snow but never stakes...it's not a bad idea though!

That is so cool, really makes me wish I had a yard! I do love next to the river, and near a slow spot. How do you get she snow off the ice when In gets stuck? (Aside from a zamboni lol)

If you mean initially like what is happening in this vid; I shovel it as well as I can and then I flood, concentrating on wearing down high spots with the water. If it's bad it can take me a number of "floods" to get it right. Luckily it looks like it will turn out, most of the snow just soaked up water and the surface looks pretty good. Once it is frozen I will probably only need one flood before we skate (maybe not even if we have a sunny just below freezing day). Later in the season I use a shovel until I have proper banks built up around the rink and then if there's more than an inch or two I use the snowblower :-)

@@UnlimitedVertical nice, I am thinking the sun might help me on the river! I just need to clear the snow and let it melt it into a skate smooth surface. Oh and before I forget, I may have a solution for the insta360 lens scratches. I am gonna order something called "poly watch" ... It is something I am gonna try on my VR goggle lenses to remove scratches on the glass. I will let you know how it does.

What’s the slope of your yard?
@UnlimitedVertical
@UnlimitedVertical 7 ай бұрын
Not much, probably 4 or 5 inches side to side (over 30 feet) and maybe 8-10 inches over the length (around 60 feet). I think it would be a pretty tough setup with much more than that.
