I would also recommend looking into Endeavour OS. It is similar to Manjaro but closer to vanilla Arch. I have tried Manjaro a handful of times and I always seem to have issues with it. One install flat out broke after a few weeks and a simple system update. But your mileage may vary, I have heard of plenty of people singing Manjaro's praises, but I am not one of them. Pretty much everything here should be the same for Endeavour, so just keep that in mind if you have issues with your Manjaro install.

If gaming performance is your highest priority Garuda has a gaming edition that comes with everything you need installed out of the box. It’s not the most lightweight though if your hardware is old, but it is still a lot better than windows when it comes to RAM use.

@@johntera4958 Were you also using Manjaro? I have been running vanilla Arch for several years now, and any issues I have had have been self imposed, and quickly repairable. I really do like Arch, but I dislike how long it takes to install from scratch. Probably part of why I am still running it. If I ever wanted to go back it would take me days to restore my system. But I have tried Endeavour OS on my old Alienware Alpha/Steam Machine, and it is running like a champ. I have been installing stuff from the AUR, running updates more frequently than I do on my main system, and it's been fine. That is why I recommend it at this point. I started with Manjaro and it only survived an update or two, then broke. I have been using Linux full-time for 7+ years now, and I have been through most of the Ubuntu derivatives, and I do like Mint the best on that side. I haven't tried Fedora, but I might one day. But when I hit Arch, it just resonated with me. And I have really liked the rolling release with current features. Sure I get cut some times, as you do on the bleeding edge, but on the whole, I have enjoyed it. So I would recommend at least trying Endeavour.

You really want to get the i7 in this case, the 4 core 8 threads makes a big difference, a lot more games can and will use the threads compared to when these were released. I had the i7 3770k and the extra threads help with stutter. You wont pay that much more for an i7 over an i5, you just have to spend more time looking
@b0ne91
@b0ne91 2 жыл бұрын
Piggy backing on your comment for hopefully some visibilty. If you buy an i3 or i5 (4xxx) in your system, you can buy an E3 1230 v3 or E3 1231 v3 much much cheaper than the i7 and they're virtually identical. You can pretty much sell the i5 for the price of that Xeon. The only "problem" is that it doesn't have integrated graphics, which you don't need with the RX480 anyway. So if you're struggling to find an i7 system for as cheap as ETA Prime, give that a go.

Nice project. Those Optiplex machines are great. My Optiplex has the i7-4770. When I have looked, those seemed much more common. Definitely worth looking at the 4770 machines, especially if the price difference is big enough. The 4770 is 3.4GHz base and 3.9 Turbo, while the 4790 is 3.6 base and 4.0 turbo, so not a huge difference. I believe everything else is the same. So people have a nice option when it comes to getting an i7 Optiplex.

Excellent concise presentation with a cadence humans can listen to 👍 For demanding use like gaming a decent quality brand name Power Supply Unit is key to stability. These old Optiplex units are a bit inadequate as seen by the need to add exotic power cable adaptors. By the way, anyone wanting a real nice Linux Server for multimedia go look for old HP Z230/240 workstations. These have Xeons and decent power supplies. Just add SSD + HDD's with Open Media Vault or TrueNAS and you're good. 👍

As for the GPU -- try looking for a RX 5500 4gb (Non-XT OEM card). It's the same price on ebay, newer architecture, and performs better than the 480/580. Another great option for the Nvidia side is the 1650 super. I did a test on 6 different budget $200 gpus on linux and those were the two top contenders.

If I recall my 4 GB RX 480 was $80 at Best Buy in Q1 of 2020. May never see those prices again.

Love the video and followed most of it for my own testing machine but a HUGE NOTE for others. Steam is not included with the Manjaro install anymore (at least it wasn't with mine), there are a couple things you need to or may need to do to install Steam. Using the konsole type: sudo pacman -Syu (this updates the systems repositories) then sudo pacman -S steam (this hits the repo and downloads/installs steam)

I just did the same thing last week on my PC with an on i3 3220 , 8gb of RAM and a Quadro p400, for light gaming and older triple A titles performance is amazing. I'm using a OS similar to Manjaro , Garuda OS, it's also based on Arch but I find performance to be better on Garuda than it is on Manjaro.

@AyaWetts 2 жыл бұрын
I do like Garuda I played with some... I originally tried the normal version and that interface gives me nightmares. Its definitely to the extreme to get really good or bad reactions from people. The KDE Barebones version though gives all the Garuda with a default KDE look, and no bloat installed, and is my preference for that. I haven't run it on my main computer I have Manjaro on yet, so not sure on any performance differences, but I have plans to try it out this weekend.

@@AyaWetts yeah the KDE version is the one I'm on ATM, the Gnome and Plasma versions were too much 😅 but it's a really great OS , plus it allows you to install all your emulators and custom applications on first boot , it really helps simplify things for beginners, plus the performance is amazing, my potato PC can play apex legends @720 p low settings with a 72 fps average.

Mate you have an awesome knowledge base in the PC area, great videos. I have come across your channel as I am looking for a Gaming PC that is powerful but also has a low power draw. Why? because I am setting up a mobile home that will be totally off-grid, so need to find an energy efficient gaming rig (my main game is GTA5 online) 2.25kw of solar on the roof and 1000AH of lithium batteries on board....with a need for 2 gaming rigs (the missus likes to play as well) while still running the rest of the home including airconditioner........so I will keep looking through your videos.

I ran Manjaro for awhile but gave up on it as for some reason on my system I couldn't get certain games and launchers to work in Lutris and couldn't get them to work in ANY Arch based distro so distro hopped for awhile til I landed on Opensuse Tumbleweed and got to say I love it and everything that should work works. TBH Tumbleweed is the one distro thats the most like Arch thanks to their OBS (Open Build Service) as it pretty much acts as the AUR does in all Arch based distros, can find all the same software there thats in the AUR but difference is they are binaries so no compiling unless you build your own OBS repo like I do

I built a $300 gaming PC for my daughter like this- city surplus tower with a 3rd-gen i5 and a Windows license, added in a 960 and some RAM I scored from work for cheap, a WD Blue SSD, boom perfect Roblox / Minecraft machine. Been running strong for 2 years now. Best money spent ever.

that computer will not be able to play any modern games, what you've bought is called ewaste junk and if you cannot afford a proper 2022 gaming pc then you are spending money you do not have. There is no reason why you could not of spent $1000 at the bear minimum and build a proper computer excluding a gpu just build it with an APU amd CPU, really you should be able to budget $1500-$2000 for a gaming computer, if you can't then you are broke and you need to fix your financial issues first

Thanks so much for the videos related to gaming specific requirements for Linux builds. I'm a long time Linux user but not a gamer, so I keep an eye out for 'gotchas'. BTW I'm with most posters here in that I avoid Nvidia like the plague - binary blob drivers only make for hell with non-gaming apps. BTW low cost 'new part' PC builds are back - an Intel Pentium G7400 and an H610 m/b will be fine for many low end needs.

Considering how iffy wine USED to be, it is quite literally a game changer. I switched to Linux full time in 1997 and got rid of my dual boot the day wine released the version with Diablo 2 support (so late 2000). I always had to check the wine appdb for support prior to purchasing a title that didn't have Icculus doing a port. Now I really don't have to, although a protondb check isn't a bad idea.

Lots of distros to choose from can make getting into Linux gaming daunting for many just go with any popular easy to use distro on an up to date release and it should work fine You might end up liking a specific distro eventually, but that happens naturally, don't overthink it

the power supply is utter crap do not use that psu, get a proper power supply and get a better ssd, the one he is using does not have DRAM on it, DRAM is a must so your entire computer does not just get entirely hogged installing a single windows update or any other download, it is an utter joke of a ssd, this build is ewaste junk, buy a modern computer have a budget of at least $1000 excluding a video card and you will be better off for it.

I would consider trying to find something like an hpz400 I've got one that's a six chord 12 gigs of RAM multiple hard drives and an SSD. Bonuses over this for probably $100 more. It came with a Wi-Fi card takes a standard power supply, and it's from 2018.
