Here's the Flying Aces Moth from 1937. It's a great flyer! While the design is 86 years old, it makes for a fairly simple project if you've built a few balsa models. You can find the plans here for free: outerzone.co.uk/plan_details....
You can get a kit for the model at either of these sites:
www.wind-it-up.com/products/f...
volareproducts.com/blog/?prod... (note: a short kit, requires additional strip balsa)

Thank you. Yes, the old magazines are treasure troves. Lots of interesting models along with all the old, cool ads. Have a small collection that I certainly enjoy.

Beautiful, I built one back in 1984, and I could tell right away that it was going to be a good flyer. Which also scared me because I didn't build the DT. After several flights in which it flew very good, I deceided to put a Telco CO2 on it. The first flight Wound up destroying to leading edge. I never got around to repairing it. But it was indeed a good flying airplane.

Harry do it! It's a great flyer. If you use a plastic prop, you're likely to need tail weight FYI.

Great flying Moth. What size prop did you carve? How many winds did you get it up to? Did you have to add any clay to balance it? Thank you

@@robinboucherwonderfulflight Thank you for the comment. The Moth sure is a great flyer! I used the prop block shown on the original plan. Pretty sure it's 9 inch diameter. I ended up increasing the motor size to two loops of 3/16th rubber and getting around 950 winds. With the carved prop, the model needed no additional balancing. Came out pretty much spot on. I'm told that if you use a plastic prop, the model requires tail weight to counter the weight of the prop. I recently lost this model at the FAC Non-NATS competition with a flight of over 7 minutes. I'll be build another! Highly recommend the design. Thanks for watching.

Hi Glenn. Thank you for the comment. This model was coated with two light coats of thinned nitrate. Old school. I'm beginning to use Krylon Klear more often for the convenance.

Where do you get your button timers? Nice work on the model.

Thank you, John. Old stash on the button timers. They are harder to come by these days. Someone told me they found some on Etzy but I have yet to look.

Those 1930s Wakefield-type designs, of which there are many variations, are the best flying models of all. Install a small electric motor, etc. and rudder/elevator R/C, and you'll have amazingly great flying model. If you're a FF purist, no problem, install the motor and radio and don't touch he controls (except the throttle, which you cut when the model is high enough) unless the model gets into trouble. No need to lose a fine model for the sake of purity, I say. Add a few inches to the wing span to compensate for the added wing loading otherwise caused by the installation of the R/C equipment. Also, the position of the R/C stuff can be use to balance the model. I have always regarded adding otherwise useless balancing weight to be a sin against the gods of aerodynamics and flight.

My models are generally flown in Flying Aces competitions which are strictly free flight. I have plenty of small RC jobs for fun. This build produced an "amazingly great flying machine" right off the pages of the 1937 magazine plan. No need for RC. In fact, no ballast required thanks to the carved prop. Quite happy with this model as-is. 😁

@@Watchingthevideos99 Of course, you are, it's great, and for Flying Aces and such we do it naked. Those old ones are just amazing, aren't they? I don't think that those designs can be improved upon. I mention R/C assist specifically for those who either don't have access to a sufficiently large, open flying field and have to keep things close, as well as those not able to or do not have someone to walk long distances or climb trees, etc. to retrieve their models after each flight. As you know, and I mention this for others reading this who may not, R/C assist also prevents losing a model to strong winds aloft, and strong thermals. I know that you know that un-R/C assisted, "pure" FF came to be because there was nothing available back in the day to assist them. Now, we don't have to be chained to the past and we can still enjoy our hobby, maybe more so, but without the frustration of the loss of a good model. Cheers, John.

Yes, totally understand. I suppose I'll reach the point where I'll consider something better than a button timer for a DT and RC is certainly a consideration for that. I do find myself building smaller models that are likely to stay on the field longer. For now, I'm fortunate to still be able to retrieve my models and have a field large enough to fly. Thank you for your comments.
