This is my entry into Bill Livolsi's No Lathe Pen Challenge (link below). Since so many people made so many great pens I decided to make the most simple pen I could think of, and focus on making my own ink. Both of these were a first for me and a couple items off the maker bucket list. Had a lot of fun, and I can't believe how well it worked!

@@TabLeft This is whats annoying with 99% of videos these days its all based on buying material from retail mainstream Yet what happens when SHTF hits or you out in the sticks You need to be able to make everything from raw materials with no retail chain/manufactoring mainstream

@TabLeft

@@charliebrownau I didn’t. The recipe it’s pretty straightforward thought Gum Arabic and carbon black (soot) I use shellac since I didn’t have Gum Arabic at the time but it will dry much quicker which isn’t always a good thing.

thats the same method inmates use to make tattoo ink but they use hair paste in a bowl made from an orange peel and put a paper bag over it.

Bryan Stellfox I didn’t but these were craft store feathers and they seemed like they maybe didn’t need it. I don’t know if it would hold up as well over time but it was for a contest and time was a factor so I skipped it.

Kaged Creations dude I'm so sorry I didn't realize someone had already done a feather quill. I scrolled through the playlist but I guess I missed it. You did a far more legit job on the quill though for what it's worth. Nice work! I was mostly interested in the ink so I kinda just threw the quill in to make it qualify lol

I'm totally not worried about it. I started looking more into it after I made the video and saw that they made the ink from smoke. It's really cool to see someone do it. I see it's unlisted now, are you going to make it public. I'd like to share it.

I've made a Quill with a similar white feather. But there's a slight yellowish discoloration on the edges of the feather. I'd really like it to be perfectly white. Any ideas on how I could acheive that..?

Shellac.i think my candle Ash might not be fine enough.
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 6 жыл бұрын
Toby Pitton maybe the soot was traditionally gathered from oil lamps I believe hence the name "lamp black". from what I understand in prison they will burn greasy hair products to gather the soot for tattoo inks etc. I haven't tried using a candle but it's possible you're getting a "waxy" soot rather than an "oily" one. Shellac isn't exactly the ideal carrier either, if you can get you hands on it from a local art supply or craft store get some "Gum Arabic" it's the real stuff used in traditional ink. I just use shellac because I had it on hand.
