In this video, I built a new board on my steepest mold - 21* kicks, 5" kick radii, and 0.5" of concave drop across 8.375" of width. This video is mostly about the design and how a skateboard's steepness affects its performance, though there is a brief summary of the build towards the end of the video.

Yeah I would love a tutorial on how to get into a coconut wheelie. Or what's best to learn first to be able to try those. It looks very sick.

@@PHeMoX First you need to learn how to get into (toeside) rail stand. Then, in rail stand try to balance only on the wheels. It's also easier with freestyle wheels, because they cover the axle of the truck.

@@PHeMoX Working on it! Mike Osterman and Tony Gale have both done tutorials I can recommend (they've helped me learn coconut wheelies), but I will be putting one out as well with my own tips. I try to create tutorials soon after learning something new, while the struggles of learning are still fresh :) .

I find that wheelbase also affects pop, but in a different way. Longer wheelbase means a longer lever (and front truck further out on that lever), so the pop happens slower and takes more energy. I went to a longer wheelbase because my old board felt too quick and snappy on the pop and I couldn't react quickly enough.

Great points! I recently bought a board from you that I designed (well, through available specs on your website) and it's great so far! That said, a deeper concave and 21 kicks picked my interest...

Great! I wasn't expecting to like this steeper board as much as I do.

Good analysis. A lot of this ties up with my personal experience, too. The point about concave affecting rail stability isn't something I'd considered, though; it'd be interesting to see how 8.375" + concave compares to 7.25" and no concave in the "height/width equation" (i.e. how tall the trucks & wheels have to be for maximum rail stability). Something else to bear in mind is that the steeper the concave becomes, the less actual contact you have with the board. The major difference I found between the old super-concave (5/16" concave drop on a 7.25") Moonshine team decks and my flat pro model was that I actually have far more control on a flat board, because I'm not just acting on or touching the very edges of my deck now. One thing you didn't really mention regarding tail angle is style, though. And I know that's subjective, but whenever I see anyone trying to freestyle on a steep tail board, it looks god-awful. You need so much more power to manoeuvre something that steep, and it shows. Pete Betti went from a freestyle board to something super steep when he started riding for Bustin, and it really played havoc with his style. He didn't look as smooth or elegant. Walk the dogs also look hilarious, because the nose comes up so much higher due to the steeper tail. On a more freestyle-specific note, the steeper nose also makes fingerflips a lot more difficult, because you're moving the force you're applying further away from the axis of the board. I suppose that might be why so many skaters who come from street and ride popsicle boards handflip instead, grabbing the side of the nose, which brings in a whole other list of problems.

after skating a dwindle r7 globe (steep kicks and concave) and a mini logo (medium/mellow kicks and concave), I think I like the mellow deck better. takes less effort to pop, so I get less tired.

This is awesome!!! I'm totally new to the game and I wanted something completely symmetrical in every way. I found some bustin (yoface) boards that are but only have two and would love to replicate as closely as possible that deck so I have a bunch of them! :)

for a beginner learning kickflips etc, what sort of concave do you think would be most user friendly?
@openSourceskateboards
@openSourceskateboards 3 жыл бұрын
If you are specifically looking to learn kickflips, I do recommend steep or at least medium concave boards, which provide a bit more leverage and a better surface for your foot to flick from.

My last few boards have been pretty mellow to medium concave, recently I bought an uncut deck because I wanted to try a short wheel base football shape but it's waaaaaaay steeper then what I'm use to, feels like I gotta relearn Ollie because I get alot of ghost pop. It's only the first week though I'll get use to it
