Great breakdown! As an herbalist, I needed a breakdown of the scenarios I need to be ready for, and I feel like you did a great job of that!

I would be interested to hear your natural substitutes or things fond in the wild that might accomplish the same thing for folks that dont have access to all this grab...

Fair starter kit for "light" treatment of emergency's. We sailed many a long and short passage throughout the years and found the "basics" of wound/med-trauma care that comes with a basic stock kit is in no way intended for that moment in time where you are more than 1-2 hours away from a EVAC ride to a trauma care center in the islands . One of the best bandages you are able to acquire is an Israeli battle bandage tourniquet , Iodine swabs and plenty of different size Steri-strips and butterfly's. Frankly, a really good emergency med-trauma kit will indeed cost between $500.00-$1000, the other MUST have, no argument, emergency basic med training from a local provider that lasts from 1 weekend to a total of 8 weekends in a month. Knowledge is the key to NOT getting into a panic situation, cooler heads keeps one breathing and helps prevent shock. I do not know it all through over 4 decades of blue water cruising, carrying light cargo inter-island and being responsible for the more than basic care of folks entrusted to me as skipper of our 64' Ketch, a few things I do know. NEVER scrimp on med-trauma gear, ever. Listen, you can buy bandages from a pharmacy yet little things like purchasing a box of bandages without reading the labels can make that small, deep cut become septic and turn into blood poisoning. Just do not buy plain bandages, buy STERILE bandages, noting like putting a bandage on a bad cut and have it get worse due to it not being sterile. Talk to your local, trusted Doctor of choice, spend the money for his advice on what antibiotics to carry including those given by injection. Have heart meds aboard like Nitro, Know what folks are allergic to. Spend the time and cash on top-end clotting factors whether wraps, bandages or the latest foam wraps. When you run out of breath you expire, out of blood, you cease to be, a member goes into shock you best be on your game, fact, life or death is hanging on the spreaders watching you fumble through a high-end kit NOT knowing how to us it. I do not mean to tell you or sound like you are not prepared yet I have seen everything on the vessel (med wise) go fine for weeks on end other than a few deep rope burns, galley hot water burns, intestinal bugs, a dislocated shoulder and dislocated knee, those are not bad or life threatening (except diarrhea) . There are super salt solutions when mixed with clean water that will re-supply, hydrate the body with necessary saline, cheap, $1.50 a packet. BUT, BUT, BUT poof, 300 miles from nowhere in ideal sea's one of our seriously experienced crew members took a fall half way up a 76 foot mast even with a harness and did a double compound fracture to his shin. AT those times when arteries are severed or torn, shock and blood loss can render that person unconscious within a very few minuets. The crew made a difference through practice we performed every two weeks. Take his advice on med kits, build it right the first time and check the date codes, there's no emergency until it is your emergency, study well, practice. OK, ill shut up now. Nice one. I would recommend jewellers tweezers as they are incredibly precise, very useful for taking out urchin spines which are conical, brittle and glass smooth from feet along with a something to numb the flesh as you're digging down and around to grip the spines. We use EthylCholride in a pressure bottle, the very cold spray comes out helps too. Or use ice to numb the area.

I suggest you also do something on the "ship's pharmacy" clearly a lot of stuff required for that too. Two suggestions for the kit, throw in half a dozen full size sanitary napkins, surprisingly good on wounds and a generous chunk of plastic sheet to put under or over a patient or to cover a dressing and tape down.

Cool video. It's been a couple of years now, so can I ask how the actual bag is going? You mention wanting a zip bag in case their is ocean spray. I've always found that any zip bags eventually sieze up and become brittle on the boat after a few years, so I just use roll top buckle dry bags. I'd be keen to hear the feedback.

Thanks for doing this. This is a lot of research work and you saved me a lot of time researching. I have added all your items to my Amazon wishlist. Where did you get the small bags for organizing inside the large bag? The small bags don't appear to come with the large bag. Thank you again.

If you are crossing oceans make sure you have a morphine prescription and sat phone with a doctor that will take your call 24/7 and some training on how to dose properly. Obviously not without a doctors guidance.

The RX drugs will have to be locked in a cabinet and that will be a different episode. If you are a cruiser what RX drugs would you carry I have a list from 20 years ago it will be fun to see what has changed....

I am not a cruiser but I follow others. This is from Starry Horizon. I liked it and this looks like a serious kit. You have the means to treat the injuries but not the medicine to treat the infections that come along with it. outchasingstars.com/2014/10/07/offshore-medical-kit-contents/ They also have a list of all their medicine inventory. Hope you can get some tips from them.

Never try to use the airway kit you have unless you've been trained to do so, especially on children, you could do more harm than good.
