Build The ULTIMATE Sharpening Station

In today's woodworking video i'm going to show you how to build a sharpening station for your workshop. The case is made out of mahogany and the stops are made out of bubinga. For the finish, I went with something that's going to be easy to touch up, so I brushed on 3 coats of shellac. The total footprint of the case is 12" wide, 12" long, 3" tall.

Hi again! I was driving home yesterday and the new owners were cleaning out the shop of the previous owner and put out by the road some free wood. Something I always look for when out and about. Anywho, There was some baltic birch, maple bed slats, and under the pile were 4-8ft x 6" African Mohagany!! (It was marked in chalk what it was). It is so beautiful with clear graining. I starting imagining what I could make with it, and I remembered how much I loved the design of this box. Simple yet practical. I'm back to watch it one more time. I have some brass & stainless steel rods that I will be turning the pull from. I just have to decide on which one. So, thank you again for inspiring me!

Pretty sweet. One of the best parts about “shop” furniture is allows you to hone your skills. That’s a really great project. I just need to size it for my Veritas honing guide

Nicely done. I really need to get some more sharpening stones. All I currently have is a 1,200 grit DMT, so I don't use hand tools as much as I'd like.

Beautiful project! I love the idea of making dedicated storage for specific task-related tools. I'm guessing you made the distance template at the bandsaw?

You make great videos, high quality and very mindful of camera position, I.e. when doing the glue up of the partitions you were off to the side so we could actually see your work and not just your arms... great job and keep up the good work

The miter clamps can be found here: amzn.to/2rsHOX2 . The Bessey trigger clamps aren't out yet but when they do release, heres the model number: EHKMICRO . They sent me a few to test and I really like them.

Do you always use water? I’ve seen videos where they use lapping fluid?

Very nice box, looks a lot like my design actually. I’m curious, why so many jigs for the degree setting? Personally I never use anything beyond 20, 25, and 30 degrees. The brass insert can get you 22/27 and 32 if you really need it and the ruler adds the micro bevel. I’m more of a minimalist in these regards, but it’s what has worked for me. Thanks for making this, it was fantastic.

Thanks for watching! I go up to 50 degrees on a spare blade for my veritas BU smoother so I figured I might as well add the other 2 or 3

SimpleCove Interesting, I hadn’t thought of that, mostly because I dont own one. Now that I am thinking of it, that has a 12 degree sole bevel already, if you are adding 50 degrees with your spare blade, thats 62 degree plane? WHat do you find this useful for? Thanks again.

Not all waterstones require storing in water. The ones I link to above do not require it. Thanks for watching!

@@Simplecove Don't forget some are *bad* to store in water for more than 10-20minutes as it can effect the binders and make for sad crumbly stones

I see you are out of stock on the template and brass shim for this sharpening station. Will you be making more of these two items?

The templates will eventually be back in stock when I have some free shop time but the brass shim is no longer going to be made due to the time required to make and the brass prices would require me to charge more and I don't have the time to make them unfortunately.

Looks great but is there really any point in going to such effort to provide a station for finely sharping your plane iron only to then immediately lose the edge after first use by putting your plane down on the bench like that?

Paul Sellars recommends leaving them like that because leaving them on their side can mess with the setup.

@@SteS Exactly this. I'd rather take the chance sitting them on their bottom and not have to adjust the blade every time I lay it down.

@@SteS Paul Sellars suggests this is only done because naughty schoolboys would bang their planes down on their workbenches. I have asked him if that is the case why manufacturers like Stanley, Irwin, etc. all recommend that you lay a plane down on it's side to protect the iron? Apart from telling me that the people that taught me were stupid he hasn't actually provided an answer to that question. In which case he obviously thinks everyone at Stanley, etc are stupid too!

@@Simplecove Surely resting the weight of the plane on the cutting iron is more likely to disturb the set up than simply laying the plane on it's side? If nothing touches the iron why would its position change?
