Building a successful tech career isn't just about immediate paychecks. An impactful strategy I discovered is leveraging volunteer work to gain invaluable experience. I learned this first-hand when volunteering at my local church.
A common misconception is that unpaid work isn't beneficial. I want to challenge this. Gaining experience, whether paid or not, is a stepping stone towards understanding and solving real industry problems. In my consulting career, I noticed the same issues often repeat across different companies within the same industry. Volunteering exposes you to these problems early on, allowing you to build problem-solving skills.
You don't have to wait for the perfect paid opportunity to start learning and contributing. Sometimes, you need to dive into the work, paid or not. Volunteering can be an excellent platform for this. It provides a practical stage to hone your tech skills, learn from hands-on experience, and become better equipped to tackle industry challenges.
So, don't undervalue volunteering. It could be the stepping stone that propels your tech career forward.
