It's time for another layout build update from Gofod Tynn and things are really racing along now! Today I'm tackling some of the big scenic jobs with one of the first things being to add all the static grass to really transform the hillside.
I'll also be focusing on little details too like adding a prototypical slate fence that might have been seen alongside a narrow gauge railway like this. 009 may be much more popular in the model railway hobby these days but there's still room for a bit of scratch building and it's certainly one way to make the layout feel unique.
As the first exhibition for Gofod Tynn draws ever closer it's important to get the layout finished overall but not loose sight of the details that really bring a model railway to life. It's shaping up to be a fantastic layout though and I'm really pleased with the progress I've made!

QUICK CLARIFICATION - I made a mistake in the video with the WWScenics loyalty point system! When you sign up using the link I provided you get 100 points straight away and then the additional 500 points after you place your first order. It’s still a fantastic deal in my opinion an absolutely worth doing but I just wanted to clear that up to avoid any confusion. To take advantage of this you can sign up to the WWScenics loyalty program here: bit.ly/3Qcs8wQ Thanks 🙂

This mini series of your layout built has got to be the best on KZfaq. It's filmed extremely well. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. I also find your editing, music and general presentation all of a extremely high standard. You should be very proud not only of your layout, but also your skills in the production of this series.

Great work as always, a few highlights for me. The Clarkson intro, planned or not just worked well. The fence I was sceptical about, but as it progressed just looked at home on the layout. Painting the wire was the bit that sold the fence the most. The static grass just works wonders on so many layouts, it again, just looks right. I'd have loved a shot of some wagons being parked in the grassed up sidings, they look so effective. I can't wait to see that scratch built station building in its final home. Thanks again for a quality video.

Thanks John! The fence was definitely a risk when I first started, I'm glad it paid off. You're right, painting the wire definitely made a world of difference. The static grass is always my favourite part of constructing a layout - it makes it feel so much more finished. As for the station building, stay tuned 😉 And thanks so much for voting too, it's really great to have your support! Thanks for watching 👍

I like the slate fence. Did you consider using a brown thread instead of wire? The tunnels need a bit of wall inside of them to block the view through them. Could be as simple as some crumpled grey paper to look like rock.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, I did consider using thread but even though it's finer, I've personally never been able to get past the fact that it just looks like thread to me. The wire is over-scale but it's a compromise I'm happy with. The insides of the tunnel will definitely be much darker too once the layout is installed inside the suitcase. I'm not sure if I'll do interiors this time though as I'll still need access through the back... there is a whole episode to go though so the layout isn't finished yet. Thanks for watching 😃

Fantastic. Since I live in North Wales can confirm it's looking like a likely location in Wales. However for the connection of the slate fencing black thread would of been more to scale even doubled up. Can wait for the next video
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Awesome, really good to know it looks right for the area! Yes I agree the wire is a bit over-scale but with thread I can never get past the fact that it just looks like thread to me, even when weathered and blended in. The wire is a compromise but one I'm not too fussed about. Thanks for watching 😃

I noticed that while using the static grass applicator you are not touching the crocodile clip to the area where glue is applied. Its my understanding that it should touch the wet part which will give better results. Could you comment on that?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Hi there, like I said at the beginning of the video you can rest the clip in the glue but it doesn't make a huge difference in my experience. As long as it's touching the layout near the area you're working on, the charge should be enough. Thanks for watching 😃

that's really good really enjoying these videos. I wonder if it's worth having some slate that's spilled out over the track in parts to make it more industrial? I have an old caravan table that a laid some 009 track on and this has inspired me to do more like this.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gareth, really glad you're enjoying watching. That's a nice idea for the slate spillage. It would definitely work for an industrial line although my layout is intended to be set in the preservation era so I think it probably would have been cleared up by then. Best of luck with your own 009 layout too and it's great that you've got some ideas! Thanks for watching 😃

I love these how to videos, I'm currently building a small Diorama that I hope to add sections to later in my life when I have time. I did have one question, I want to set my diorama and the rest of the sections in wintertime, do you think its worth using grass effects first as a start and then adding the snow effects later? or just skip the greenery and go to snow?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle, that sounds awesome. It's almost a little bit like my 00 gauge modular layout. For modelling snow it depends how deep you want it to be. For deep snow then I would imagine you could skip straight to the snow if you wanted too - but for light dusting or frost effect it would be best to do the scenery as normal and then add the snow afterwards. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃

On the one I used you feed the power into either of the screw terminals at each end of the strip - the ones 90 degrees to the other terminals. The reason two are supplied is if you want to pass power along to a second bank of switches. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 👍

Someone please explain to me how a static grass applicator works.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Жыл бұрын
Basically the applicator creates a static charge between the mesh and the wire that is touched to the layout. When the grass falls through the mesh it wants to "complete the circuit" so to speak, and is attracted up to the mesh on the applicator causing it to stand upright. The glue then holds it in this position while it dries. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
